Lesson 5: Justice and Fairness: Promoting the common good

Together with my in this discussions are the (---) and I am Angelo Bacarro the first
presenter for today. Let us proceed to the reporting proper as this report may take too
long for its narrative.

Moving onto the next slide are our learning objectives or outcome for this discussion

-Understand how the philosophers view justice and fairness
-be able to critique justice and fairness, and make use of these in a real life setting. -
Recognize the theory of the philosophers.

Now, I may have ask someone in this class who can give me a very short definition of
what is justice anyone?

What is justice?

Justice is a complex and multifaceted concept that encompasses the fair and equitable
treatment of individuals within a society. It involves the impartial administration of laws and
the protection of individual rights to ensure that everyone is treated with fairness, equality,
and respect. Justice seeks to address and rectify injustices, promote societal harmony, and
maintain a balance between the rights and responsibilities of individuals.
The legal proceedings adhere to due process, meaning that proper legal procedures are
followed, and the accused is afforded all the rights guaranteed by law.

What is fairness?

Fairness refers to the quality of being just, equitable, and impartial. It involves treating all
individuals or groups in a way that is free from discrimination, bias, or favoritism, and it ensures
that opportunities and resources are distributed without undue advantage or disadvantage.
In the context of education, fairness is crucial to providing equal opportunities for all students,
regardless of their background, abilities, or circumstances. Here's an example of fairness in

Now, let us talk about the justice and fairness as the legal basis

Legal Basis
RA 10931, Free tuition Law, also known as the ‘’ Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education
Act,’’ signed by President Duterte in 2016. All college students are privileged to enroll in any
state colleges/ university without paying tuition and other fees.
On great example for this republic act is us students of USTP, Lucky enough to got into a
university with free tuition and education as long as we pass the entrance examination. Now
Question: Are you in favor that no matter what the financial status- upper class, middle class,
and lower class- of the students will be given the same privilege?

John Rawls, a political philosopher during the 20th century. His main work is ‘’ A theory of
Justice’’ in 1971, it addressed social issues particularly in the name of justice between the state
and citizens, and among the citizens. He acquired academic training at Princeton University,
thereafter he became a philosophy professor at harvard.
