Q1. (CLO-3) Find the stoichiometric ratio of Toluene (C7H8), showing balanced chemical
equations for the complete combustion of the fuel. Show each step, as well as tabulated
check. Assume complete combustion and ignore gases other than oxygen. Percentage mass
of Oxygen in air may be taken as 23.2. Follow taught procedure. The answer should be
accurate up to three places of decimal. Use following data in the form needed:
Molar mass (grams or kg)
Nitrogen 28.013
Oxygen 31.998
Argon 39.948
Carbon 12.011
Helium 4.003
Methane 16.043
Hydrogen 2.0159

For Toluene C7 H8 + O2 → CO2 + H2O

C7 H8 + 9O2 → 7CO2 + 4H2O 2

C7 H8 + 9 O2 → 7 CO2 + 4 H2O
Carbon 7 + 0 = 7 + 0
2
Hydrogen 8 + 0 = 0 + 8
Oxygen 0 + 18 = 14 + 4

(12.011x7) + (1.00795 x 8) = 84.077 + 8.0636 = 92.1406 moles of Toluene

need 9 x (31.998) = 287.982 moles of oxygen
Therefore oxygen-fuel ratio is = 287.982 /92.1406 = 3.1255 2

Now 1 kg of Toluene requires: 3.1255 kg of oxygen. 2

Therefore Stoichiometric air-fuel ratio is =3.1255 kg x100/23.2 = 13.472 2

Alternate calculations showing rounded figures:

C7 H8 + 9O2 → 7CO2 + 4H2O
(12.011x7) + (1.008 x 8) = 84.077 + 8.064 = 92.141 moles of Toluene
need 9 x 32 = 288 moles of oxygen
Therefore oxygen-fuel ratio is = 288 /92.141 = 3.1256
2
Therefore Stoichiometric air-fuel ratio is =3.1256 kg x100/23.2 = 13.473
