PRESSURE MEASUREMENT USING MANOMETER

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the pressure of the liquid column using manometer.

THEORY:

A manometer is a pressure measuring instrument, usually limited to measuring

instrument, usually limited to measuring pressures near to atmospheric. The term
manometer is often used to refer specifically to liquid column hydrostatic instruments. In
this experiment the focus will be on the measurement of differential pressure of two
different liquids placed inside the U – tube manometer. Due to surface tension, the lower
meniscus will be used in determining the height of the column.

MATERIALS AND APPARATUS:

QTY Unit Description

1 pc Manometer
1 btl Mercury
2 pc Beakers
1 pc Beaker dropper
1/4 Liter Light grade oil (ex. SAE 30)
PROCEDURES:

1. Clean the manometer and dry the inner tube.

2. Fill the U-tube with mercury about 4 centimeters from the bottom of the tube.
3. Mark the initial level of the mercury outside the U-tube.
4. Fill the side of the U – tube with water up to the top lid of the U – tube.
5. Mark the final level mercury outside the U – tube.
6. Compute for the pressure equivalent of mercury column using 13.6 g/cm 3as the
density of mercury.
7. Repeat procedure using light grade oil with specific gravity of 0.80.
