1 Overview

The DM3 series Wet test gas flow meter is a volumetric fixed - point gas flowmeter that relies on the
sealing fluid to isolate the inlet and outlet gas, usually used as a gas volume measurement or mass
transfer. The DM3 series wet test gas flow meter has a wide measuring range and high
measurement accuracy.

The flow meter drum blades use a new three-dimensional design calculation of the spiral curve,
which makes the pressure loss small, wide measurement range, reliable accuracy and excellent
reproducibility; the liquid level indication adopts the tip reflection level indicator. It can easily and
accurately indicate the liquid level; the main parts are made of 304 stainless steel which has
excellent corrosion resistance, wider utility range and longer service life.

1.1 Model number selection and its representative meaning

The model composition of this instrument and its representative meaning are as follows:

1.2 Environmental Use and working conditions

This instrument is required to be used in the following environmental and working conditions:
(1) Ambient temperature: (20 ± 2)℃; Relative humidity: (45 ~ 75)% RH; Atmospheric pressure: (86 ~
106) kPa.
(2) The meter should not be subjected to mechanical vibration during test procedures.

2 Structural features and working principle

2.1 Overall structure
The DM3 type wet test gas flow meter is composed of shell, drum wheel, magnetic transmission
assembly, mechanical counter, dial and other components, and the external configuration of the
liquid level indicator, U-type manometer gauge, glass tube thermometer and so on to display the
relevant parameter values in the measurement process. The structure is shown in Figure 1.

The drum wheel consists of a wheel shell and 4 sets of turbine blades, and 4 sets of blades divide
the drum wheel equally into 4 metering chambers. The drum wheel is flat in the sealing solution of
the shell body, more than half immersed in the sealing liquid, supported by the drum axle, and the
rotation is flexible. The drum axle end is fitted with a magnetic transmission mechanism to drive the
front panel pointer and the mechanical counter mounted on the spindle to indicate and display the
output volume. The flow meter observes the liquid level by means of a level indicator mounted on
the housing, which can reduce or increase the volume of the Measuring chamber by adjusting the
level of the body in the shell.

2.2 Working principle

The working principle of DM3 wet test gas flow meter is shown in Figure 2 below.

Figure 2 Schematic diagram of the working principle

When the gas to be measured passes through the wet test gas flow meter, a differential pressure is
formed at the inlet and outlet ends of the flow meter. The differential pressure forces the drum to
rotate, thereby causing the gas to fill the metering chamber one by one. The metering chamber is
inflated when it leaves the liquid level, and the sealing liquid discharges the gas when entering. Each
time the drum is rotated; each metering chamber fills and empties the gas once. Since the volume
of the metering chamber is constant, the number of cycles in which the metering chamber is filled
and emptied is recorded, and the cumulative flow rate of gas through the flow meter can be
obtained.

In the gas metering process, the drum shaft rotates synchronously with the drum, and the magnetic
drive mechanism drives the pointer mounted on the front panel and the mechanical counter on the
shaft accurately displaying the volume value of the outflow on the dial.

5 Installation and piping connections

5.1 Installation
The DM3 wet test gas flow meter should be installed in a room that is not directly exposed to air
conditioning and is not exposed to direct sunlight, and the ambient temperature is 20℃ ± 2 ℃. The
platform to be placed is vibration-free. Adjust the three leveling anchors on the bottom until the
level bubble is in the middle.

5.2 Pipe Connection

The DM3 wet test gas flow meter is connected by a rubber hose, preferably with a PPS pipe
connection, which makes it easy to achieve zero leakage.

6 Liquid Level Adjustment

6.1 Injection of sealing fluid

The flow meter uses distilled water or No.5 white oil as the sealing solution. Unscrew the plug at the
liquid supply, inject the seal liquid into the flow meter through the liquid supply, observe the level
indicator, until the level reaches the needle tip of the level meter, and unscrew the plugging head.

6.2 Draining the liquid into the tube

Unscrew the trachea discharge nozzle at the lower left side of the flowmeter and drain the sealing
fluid that clogs the pipe blowing into the tube. Each time the sealing fluid and the moving
flowmeter are added, the sealing fluid may enter into the blowing tube, and the blockage blowing
into the tube, so that the flowmeter does not work properly, so it is necessary to empty the sealing
fluid blowing into the tube, and then screw the blow into the pipe drain plugging head.

6.3 Idling

Connect the air source to the gas inlet of the flow meter, so that the flowmeter can run for dozens
of laps at the maximum flow rate. The liquid has been stirred to make the liquid temperature
uniform, and the drum is evenly attached to the liquid to prepare for adjusting the liquid level.

7|Page
Page |8

6.4 Level adjustment

After the air transfers multiple times, let the flowmeter remain static for 3 minutes then adjust the
liquid level to the correct state, see Figure 3. If the liquid level is too low, unscrew the plug at the
filling nozzle; inject the sealing solution until the liquid reaches the correct level. If the level is too
high, open the flowmeter left side of the discharge valve, discharge the sealing liquid until the liquid
reaches the correct level.

Figure 3 Tip position status diagram

7 Sealing Test

In order to ensure the safe operation and measurement accuracy of the flowmeter, the flowmeter
must be tested for leaks. First tighten each plug, close all valves; slowly inject gas into the flowmeter
from the pressure port, pressurize to the maximum working pressure (10kPa), turn off the gas
source, observe the pressure gauge for 5 minutes to ensure there are no leaks in the system.

8 Measurement of temperature and pressure

DM3 series wet test gas flow meter can measure gas pressure, gas temperature and liquid
temperature, which can be collected either by U-type manometer gauge and glass tube
thermometer, or by pressure transmitter and temperature transmitter to measure the pressure and
temperature of gas medium inside the flowmeter and sealed liquid temperature.

8|Page
Page |9

9 Preparation before application

1) Allow sufficient time to enable the temperature of the sealing liquid to stabilize as close as
possible to the ambient temperature. Confirm that the flowmeter has been level-adjusted and the
liquid level is correctly adjusted.

2) Let the gas to be tested run through the flowmeter empty as it must meet the following two
requirements:

 Exhaust the remaining air inside the flowmeter and the pipeline, so that the measured gas fills
the inside of the flowmeter and the connecting pipeline;

 When the ambient temperature is 20℃ ± 2℃, the temperature difference between the
measured gas temperature, the sealing liquid temperature and the ambient temperature does not
exceed 1 ℃; otherwise, the flow meter must continue to run empty until it meets the requirements
for measurement or volume transfer applications.

3) When the pressure measurement is zero, you must pay attention to the flow meter gas inlet and
gas outlet to the atmosphere.

4) Set the working flow of the measured gas, and find the correction factor at the flow point in the
“calibration certificate” of the flow meter to perform flow correction.

At this point, the flow meter can be put into use.

10 Measurement value correction

1) Measurement:

 The measurement volume should be a number multiple of the rotary volume to ensure the
repeatability of the flow meter.
 Measurement indication
Can be read by the panel pointer and counter - each turn output a volume of gas, Vi
2) Actual measured value

The actual flow value within the measurement accuracy range is calculated by
Vref = kVi …………… (1)

In the middle:

Vref —— Actual value of the cumulative flow of gas flowing through the flow meter(L)

9|Page
P a g e | 10

k —— Flow meter correction factor (found from the verification certificate based on current

flow

Vi —— Flow meter indication

11 Calibration

The re-calibration time interval of DM3 series wet test gas flow meter is recommended to be 1 year,
or it can be determined by the frequency of use or management requirements.

12 Cautions

(1) Non-certified personnel must not unscrew the back cover of the flow meter.

(2) The flowmeter should always be handled with care and only lifted by handle at the top of
flowmeter. Do not attempt to lift by the liquid level gauge and/or the outlet pipe.

(3) When transporting the flowmeter for long distances, empty the sealing liquid, package it in the
packing box, and fix it to avoid impact.

(4) When the flowmeter is not used for a long time, the sealing liquid should be drained, packed in
a packing box, fixed, and stored in a dry place.

(5) When the flow meter is running, the flow rate should be increased slowly to the Max flow
point to prevent the impact of gas surge/hammer on the flow meter.
