Q1. Your cousin lives in hilly Pir Sohawa and travels to Blue Area daily. He has the choice of
purchasing Daihatsu Esse D or Daihatsu Mira X, and is concerned about the ability to
climb the sloped road with a vehicle full of passengers. Which vehicle would you advise
him to purchase (say both cost the same) purely based on the force exerted on the
pavement by the tyres? Show complete calculations for each vehicle. Any assumptions, if
essentially required, to be mentioned. Data of both vehicles is given on reverse.
(Assume climbing in 2nd Gear) 10 marks
Ans. This was a rather simple quiz. Two vehicles were given with identical engines and
gear boxes. Only Final drives and Tyres were different. Since the criterion of selection was
climbing sloped roads, it was obvious that the vehicle exerting greater force on the pavement
would be the preferred choice. The requirement was to calculate the force exerted on the
pavement in the second gear. So all that was required was to calculate the wheel torque and
from that the force exerted on pavement for both vehicles, and select vehicle exerting greater
force on the pavement.
I will assume that tyres are rigid and there are no losses in drive train
