Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

Sketch on a main plane and extrude join.

1. Open Autodesk Inventor.

2. To start a new drawing basic, you either can start with part, assembly or drawing.
3. Choose part.

4. On 3D Model tab, there are some basic important command for 3D model start from
2D Skecth, extrude, revolve, sweep and etc.

5. Go to tools tab/document settings/units, change the unit length to milimeter.

6. On left side, you have model browser showing the feature tree of part 1. Never
closed it.

7. Let start with 2D sketch on 3D Model tab. You will see the 3 main plane on screen.

8. Choose XZ plane, automatically the plane will turn up perpendicular to your eyes
view.

9. Now you are in the sketch mode. Skecth1 created in model browser.

10. Use rectangular command to draw a geometry as follow:

i. First click at origin and second point at any to the right side.
ii. Use dimension to change the actual dimension. (38 x 82)
iii. Exit sketch mode.

11. Zooming (scroll) to get a clear view.

12. Click extrude. It automatically choose the rectangular profile since no others profile
and preview it.
13. Extrude upward with distance 10 mm. OK.

14. Done. Now you should have Extrusion1 in model browser. Just in case you have
made mistake, you can easily go to model browser and right click to make any
changes in the skecth1 or extrusion1.

15. Remember about the basic operation, sketch and create 3D model. Need a proper
plan and understanding to choose a specific plane.
16. Other than the 3 basic planes at the origin, you can also use surface of object to
start a sketch.

Sketch on object surface and extrude cut.

17. Now select top surface of the object to start a new skecth2.
18. Draw the 2 circles with diameter 20 at any point inside the rectangular.

19. Dimension the distance from center of circle to edge of rectangular box to position
the circles as follow:

20. Finish sketch to exit sketch mode.

21. Extrude. This time you need click the 2 circles as the profile.
22. Use the 2nd option extrude cut.

23. Extrude cut downward 2 mm. There are 4 options of direction.

Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

24. Done. In model browser, you should have Extrude1 and Extrude2.

Navigate view

vertex/corner
Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

25. Look at the cube on top right screen. You should understand that the current view of
your object is in isometric. So, we state here this our original position. (top, front,
right)
26. Just click on the cube surfaces or vertex to get view object in isometric or
orthographic.
27. After you play around the views, make sure you know how to get back to original
position.

Fillet

28. Fillet. By default, we are using constant radius and select mode edge.
29. Select the 2 edges and define fillet radius 14 mm.

30. OK to finish the fillet operation. Fillet1 is created in model browser.

Extrude3

31. Create a new sketch at the following surface.

Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

32. Draw the profile below.

i. Start with circle diameter 38 mm simply at any point close above the object.
ii. Use dimension to locate the circle.
iii. Add a line from the bottom corner up tangent to circle. Left and right side.
iv. Add a horizontal line to closed loop.

33. Extrude 10 mm.

Extrude4 and add constraint.

34. Create a new sketch at the following surface.

35. Draw a circle with diameter 38 mm beside the object.

Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

36. Use concentric constraint to position the circle.

37. Select first the circle and second the arc.

Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

38. Done with concentric circle.

39. Extrude 2 mm as follow.

Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

40. Done Extrude4.

Detail out the 3 holes.

Add plane
Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

There is another important step to do 3D modelling. Previously you start a sketch by:

i. Basic plane from origin

ii. Surface of object

Now, we want to add a new plane.

42. Choose midplane between two planes and perform as follow.

43. Workplane1 is created in model browser.

Autodesk Inventor Basic Sketching and Modelling Techniques

44. Start sketch a closed loop triangle.

45. Use symmetric distance to perform 10 mm extrude.

46. In model browser, right click workplane1 and inactivate visibility.

47. Without add a new plane, you still can do the triangle with build up a block and
chamfer it.
48. Save your drawing (.ipt).
