Show that there are two angles of projection for which the horizontal range is the

same. Also show that the sum of the maximum heights for these two angles is
independent of the angle of projections.

Horizontal range is given by,

u❑2 ×sin(2 θ)
R=
g

We know, sin(18 0 ∘−2θ)=sin 2θ

⇒ sin 2(90 ∘−θ)=sin 2 θ
⇒ sin 2 θ1=sin 2 θ (where (9 0∘ −θ)=θ1)
⇒ 2 θ1=2 θ
⇒ θ1 =θ

u❑2 ×sin(2 θ)
Also, R=
g
u❑2 × sin(2 θ1 ) u❑2 × sin(2 θ)
R 1= = (∵ θ1=θ )
g g

On comparing R❑and R1 we get , R❑=R 1

Hence there are two angles of projection θand (9 0∘ −θ❑) for which the horizontal range
R❑is same.
Now,
The maximum vertical height attained by a particle projectile is given by
u❑2 × sin❑2 (θ)
H= … .(1)
2g
2 2 ∘
u❑ × sin❑ (90 −θ) u cos 2 θ
2
Now , H 1= = …(2)
2g 2g

Adding (1) and (2),

(cos ¿ ¿2 θ+sin 2 θ) u 2
H ❑ + H 1=u2 = ¿ …( 3)
2g 2g
Hence, equation (3) clearly shows that the sum of the heights for the two angles of
projections is independent of the angle of projection.
