A boy stands at 39.

2 m from a building and throws a ball which just passes through a

window 19.6 m above the ground.Calculate the velocity of projection of the ball?

answer: 27.72 m s−1

Given H=19.6 m

Since the boy is standing at a distance 39.2 mfrom the building ,whose height is the
maximum height of the projectile followed by the ball ,hence he is standing at half range
of the projectile
Hence, R=39.2+ 39.2=78.4 m

Equation for Horizontal range is given by,

u❑2 ×sin(2 θ)
R= ….(1)
g

Equation for maximum height is given by,

u❑2 × sin❑2 (θ)
H= ….(2)
2g

Dividing (2) by (1),

2 2
H u❑ ×sin❑ (θ) g 1
= × 2
= tanθ
R 2g 2 ×u❑ × sin θ× cos θ 4
4 H 4 × 19.6
tanθ= = =1
R 78.4
θ=tan❑−1 (1)=45❑∘

As,
u❑2 ×sin(2 θ)
R=
g
u ❑2 ×sin (90❑∘)
78.4=
9.8
u=√❑
