Two projectiles are thrown with different velocities and at different angles so as to cover

the same maximum height.Show that the sum of the times taken by each to reach the
highest point is equal to the time taken by either of the projectiles.

Let, the velocities of two projectiles be u1and u2 at angle θ1and θ2with horizontal

Their maximum heights will be

u21 × sin❑2 (θ1 ) u22 × sin❑2 (θ2 )
H 1= and H 2=
2g 2g

Since H 1=H 2

u21 × sin❑2 (θ1 ) u22 ×sin❑2 (θ2 )

⇒ =
2g 2g
⇒ u1 sin θ1=u2 sin θ2 .....(1)
Time of flight for the two projectiles are
2 u1 sin θ1 2u2 sin θ2
T 1= and T 2=
g g

Using (1) we get,

T 1=T 2
u 1 sin θ1 u sin θ2
Time taken for either projectile , t 1= and t 2= 2
g g
2u sin θ1 2u 2 sin θ2
Adding t 1 and t 2, t 1+ t 2=¿ 1 ∨¿
g g
or t 1+ t 2=Time of flight of either projectile .
