CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to observe the anxiety to speak of students Junior High School /
in speaking ability in performance. The object of this research is Junior High School / Mts
Tolabudin Warung asem – Batang.

A. Background of the study

In Indonesia, English language is one of the main subject that learn in a junior high school.
Second language anxiety has a debilitating effect on the oral performance of speakers of English
as a second language. There are four skills that should mastered there are listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. Speaking is considered as a important skill it must be reach by the students.
Because language as a communication tool with the others takes important role. Further more,
Lyle (1993) in Bertram ( 2002 ) stated ‘oral language is a connector that important in learning
process and development student think. Oral language that can be managed our speaking
children when they tell about the experience it must be focused in own thinking to speak in oral
language. Before the children can be mastering speaker arround, they must be able to speaking
because is one of the important learning and of acquiring knowledge.
Ability of speaking English language is a important point in communication, but
sometimes student felt anxiety that inhibit to speak up.
