1. Part A – You and your household

1.1 This part of the report focuses purely on Berry Hill, Five Acres, Christchurch and Edge. The
information derives from West Dean Parish Housing Needs Survey undertaken in 2013, which
included all parts of the parish with the exception of Bream and Brockhollands. Table A below

1.2 273 respondents from Berry Hill, Five Acres, Christchurch and Edge indicated that it was their
main home, 5 respondents indicated it was their second home and 5 respondents did not reply.

1.3 Table B below indicates the length of time respondents have lived in West Dean. Of
respondents, 63% have lived in the parish for 20 years or more or their whole life, and 9% have
lived in the parish for 4 years or less.

1.4 When asked...How would you describe your home (in terms of house type)? Table C below
shows 67% of respondents live in a house, 26% live in a bungalow, none live in a flat/apartment,
3% live in sheltered/retirement, and <1% live in caravan/mobile home. 3% did not answer the
question..

1.7 When asked...What is the tenure of your home? Table F below shows 84% of respondents in
West Dean are owner-occupiers, a little over two thirds of whom have no mortgage, and the
remainder own their home with a mortgage. 3% live in private rented, <1% live in shared
ownership, none live in tied accommodation, 10% live in housing association rented and 1% live in
local authority rented. About 2% did not answer the question.

1.8 When asked... Has your home been adapted to increase physical accessibility? 26
respondents said their home had been adapted to increase physical accessibility.

1.9 When asked... Has anyone from your family moved away from West Dean in the last 5 years
to difficulty finding an affordable home locally? 13 people answered ‘yes’.

1.10 When asked ....Are you in favour of a small development of affordable homes for local
people if there was a proven need? 80% said ‘yes’, 16% said ‘no’ and 4% gave no reply.

1.11 The figures shown in Tables F and G demonstrate that generally people under the age of 55
years are underrepresented in survey response. And people aged 55 and over are over
represented.

2. Part B - Home Working

2.1 Question B1 asks....Does any member of your household carry out any paid employment
from home? 9% of respondents said ‘yes’, 88% said no, and 3% did not reply.

2.2 Question B2 asks...Do you work for your employer or your own business? Of the 26
respondents who answered ‘yes’ to the previous question, 59 said ‘employer’ and 18 said ‘own
business’. Three respondents did not answer the question.

3. Part C - Housing Needs

Berry Hill/Five Acres/Christchurch/Edge

3.1 The West Dean Parish housing needs survey 2013 revealed 62 households in need of
housing in the parish, 26 of whom live in Berry Hill, Five Acres, Christchurch or Edge.

3.2 Of 26 households living in Berry Hill, Five Acres, Christchurch or Edge, 14 households
require affordable rented housing, 1 household requires shared ownership and 11 households can
afford the open market. Details of these 26 households’ requirements are shown in Table N below.
