That Sugar Film: A Reaction Paper

That Sugar Film, a fast-paced, informative and entertaining documentary of

Damon Gameau is a discovery of the truth about sugar. Damon becomes a human lab
rat in this documentary about the hazards of excessive sugar consumption. Under the
guidance of a team of scientists and nutritionists, he becomes a human lab rat,
consuming a diet that includes 40 teaspoons of sugar per day for 60 days (40
teaspoons being the Oz average). The catch is that he must do this without consuming
any soft drinks, chocolate, ice cream or confections; he will eat only foods that are
marketed as “healthy,” such as low-fat yogurt, muesli bars, juices and cereal, but which
in fact are laden with hidden sugars. After the experiment, he will be measuring and
examining changes in his body with the help of the professionals.

At the beginning of the film, the clips of sweet products like candies, chocolates,
marshmallows, cupcakes and other sweetened products as well as the music caught
my attention. Until now, “I just can’t get enough” is still on my mind. I have seen a lot of
documentaries but this one is exceptional and I really like it. While watching the film, I
noticed the sound effects as well as the animations and creative visualizations which I
enjoyed. This film enabled me to realize a lot. At the same time, I’ve learned that too
much sweet, too much sugar is not good to our body. That hits me since from the past
months, I’ve been eating a lot of sweets because it keeps me enthusiastic. There are
times that I need to stay up and supply myself with sweets so I could finish the things
that I must do for the day. Because of the film, I am able to understand what is really
happening inside our bodies and it also made me realize that I shouldn’t be eating a lot.
In fairness, Gameau does make a few solid journalistic points. In one of the film's
strongest sequences, he visits a remote aboriginal community in the Australian
Outback, where nutritionists are struggling to counter the devastating health effects of a
high-sugar diet. He also travels to rural Kentucky to meet a 17-year-old who has lost all
his teeth due to an addiction that locals call "Mountain Dew Mouth."

There’s a lot of things that we should be aware of, especially when it comes to
our health. We may not realize but there are things that we used to do not knowing the
mere fact that it is bad for our health. That Sugar Film contained few shock revelations
for anyone and Damon was able to make a great documentary which is very appealing
and informative for me. After watching the film, it made me realize that I shouldn’t be
doing things that I used to do from the past months (like eating too much chocolates in a
day). I believe that this film would be very helpful to all other people in the world and I
recommend this film to be watched in schools. I think people should watch this film and I
hope it would stir some thoughts and questions about their own diet, and later on would
be a catalyst to change for the better.
