That Sugar Film reflection

It is already jotted down in our innate knowledge how important food is in our lives
especially in fulfilling the fundamental rule of our survival. We eat because it is needed by
our body and it is our primary source of energy to move and do things. In retrospect there are
also other factors to be considered in marking out the essence of food in our lives as human
beings, and one of it is the taste of what we eat that makes it edible. Taste that is one of the
five basic sense of the human body which entails and classified through our mouth, by our
tongues. Taste the specifically set up our mood and appetite. One of the taste people would
always yearn is sweetness. Since the beginning of our childhood, we have been introduced to
it as something that is always incorporated with candies, soft drinks, juices and chocolates. It
also figuratively accompanied by the ideology that eating sweet food will uplift our sour
mood and glitter it with joyful moments.

The Sugar Film that was produced and released on 2014 discusses and centers its main
plot about literally the sugar consumption in our community. Today, in the realm of times, it
represents the idea about food awareness especially about how sugar and its impact on the
human body. Indeed, intaking of sugar has been a huge part of our daily lives, we surely
cannot live without it. Sugar that is considered to be a primary ingredient for almost
everything in the market and is crucial also to the human body to attain the balance of living
healthily. The film focuses on the Aussie actor named: Damon Gameau which also is the
director, interviewer and the main actor of the documentary film. As he waits for his first-
born son with his girlfriend, together with the medical experts, he undergoes a 60 days diet of
40 teaspoons of sugar a day diet which he would not eat the typical food in the market that is
already known to be sugar based but will focus on the so-called sugar-free advertised food.
Meaning he will practice a healthy lifestyle pseudo diet in accordance to the standards of the
society about sugar-free food. By means of this, he has centered his diet on eating cereals,
sports drinks, smoothies, baked beans, organic juices, even those non-fat frozen yogurts in
the grocery.

As he documented his journey over this ‘a not so typical’ kind of documentary, he aimed
to educate the populace about how a sugar-free advertised food or goods in the market do not
concede with the literal fact that it does not bear any sugar ingredient on it. But just a
marketing strategy to attract consumers, he targeted with his purpose of doing this to share
awareness to people about the effects of sugar on the human body as to how clueless we are
with what we are eating or intaking having the thought that since it was categorized to be a
healthy edible by the society, we already concluded that it will not harm us in the longer
phase of consuming it.

For such period of 2 months in his so-called sugar-free diet, Damon Gameau consults
with the medical experts that are also within the scope of this documentary film. The film did
not just focus on Damon Gameau journey with his experimental diet but he also visited a
native and indigenous community called Amata and he witnessed how the locals consumes a
heavier remark of soft drinks a year. And he even met a child that has rotten teeth because of
the undisciplined intake of the Mountain Dew that still wants to drink the latter once his teeth
will be addressed by the dentist.

Towards the end of Damon Gameau’s journey with his diet, even when he still continues
with his daily exercise’s routine, as he consulted with the medical experts especially the
nutritionists, he has been opened to the truth that his body have decreased in a way that he
was subjected to develop fatty liver disease, in the early stages of type 2 diabetes, heart-
disease and other decremental health issues. This only opens up to the greatest lesson
everyone who have watched can obtain, that a sugar may be sweeter but its impact to our
body is bitterly in the odds of bridging us to becoming weak and frail. This signifies that at
the end of the day, it is our accountability and outmost responsibility to ourselves to be aware
of the substantial truth, just like with the simple knowledge about the sugar level intake in
our daily lives, we could get to save our future self from suffering due to how we act today.
Sugar can that easily be traced as to how it was marketed in our society, entails a very
dangerous ingredient in our way of pursuing to living longer. The story and plot of The Sugar
Film could be our reminder how important it is to be conscious with the facts that we
incorporate with our body, and that everything being broadcasted to be safe and healthy is
already subjected to be how it is. Let be the story captured and shared by Damon Gameau our
take away note in living this life and our learning about the proper intaking of sugar in our
eating habits, that indeed, everything is good in moderation – sugar to be classified under this
quote, from the deeper roots of its attribute, it is already bad itself, therefore, it is necessarily
to be cautious.
