WAR

Conflict and war are a beastly act that should be avoided despite being used as a measure

of victory by many nations. In the translated book of Utopia, Dominic Baker-Smith quotes that

"there is nothing more inglorious than that glory that is gained by war". This is in regard to the

perception the citizens of Utopia have on the issue of war and their likelihood of getting into a

war. They seem to dislike the victories which come along with war and engaging in it is their last

option. In the translated book, Dominic Baker-Smith further discusses the discipline and reaction

of the Utopians towards war.

From the passage on war, it is evident that Utopians hate war regarding it as inhuman.

Despite this, they train and get prepared for eventualities of an attack. To them, achievements

through war are inglorious. This shows that the Utopians only engage in war when compelled to

in order to defend their loved ones or liberate and free the people from any form of tyranny or

oppression. This gives a sense of peace and harmony among the Utopians. The constant training

of both men and women shows readiness to fight and defend themselves in case of an exigency

and also depicts togetherness. This gives a feeling that Utopia is a safe and peaceful place that is

desirable to live. There are no war insecurities as the Utopians avoid it at all costs.

The peace in Utopia is shown in the way they handle and engage in war. Use of strategies

to defeat and conquer their enemies rather than becoming victors by shedding of blood. The

strategies include hiring assassins to kill the king or other leaders in their threat country. This

causes suspicions and creates chaos in the threat nation. Other than training men and women in

the discipline of war, the Utopians also have gold and silver treasures as war reserves which they

use as rewards to hired assassins once they succeed in their missions. This shows readiness and

preparedness in eventualities of war against them.

The impressions of unity are clearly shown by the fact that there are no private properties

among the Utopians. Goods are kept in warehouses from where the Utopians access them upon

request. Doors of the houses in Utopia have no locks and everyone must participate in agriculture

with a requirement of living in the countryside for two years executing similar duties regardless

their gender and learning farming. Utopian must also learn one of either weaving mainly by

women, masonry, carpentry or metalsmithing which are the essentials of trade in Utopia. This

further shows unity and harmony amongst the citizens.

With Utopians fighting any form of oppression, they, however, have two slaves, from

other nations or captured Utopian criminals, in every household. Gold chains are used to weigh

them down which is shameful and makes the citizens hate slavery. This serves as a lesson and a

warning to people who might go against the Utopian laws thus enhancing peace and harmony by

minimizing criminal activities. The slaves are released later once they set a record of good and

upright behavior.

Uniformity and decency are among the themes in Utopia. They are enhanced by the

participation of people in various activities such as learning and practicing farming as well as

learning trade activities and discipline of war. Goods are stored in warehouses and are given out

once person requests. The houses there do not have padlocks which show the theme of common

interest. People have everything in common. The punishing of criminals and turning them into

slaves till their record is clean connects to the theme of morals and virtues in Utopia. The citizens

have to be upright or otherwise be made slaves.
