Task-based Language Teaching Activity

Students are asked to create a survey with several questions about fashion and style which will
be conducted in the class. They then have to use the results of the surveys to find out the latest
trends in fashion by writing a report.

Pre-task
- T introduces the theme and objectives of the task to Ss: they have to carry out a survey in
the class and write a report about fashion trends.

- T provides Ss with some topics that they can use to write the questions in the survey:
+ new places to shop for clothes
+ current clothing styles
+ current hairstyles
+ famous brands
+ popular colors
+ trendy accessories

- Ss are given preparation time to think about how to do the task.

The task cycle:

Task
- Ss work in groups and create a survey of each of their group using the topics given or they can
think of some other questions related to fashion and style. Vocabulary for fashion and style and
some grammar points learned in the previous lessons are expected to help them make the
survey.

Example: Ss may write these questions:

1. What colors are popular right now?
2. What are some new places to shop for clothes these days?
3. What hairstyles are trendy right now?
4. Do you usually look for designer clothes?

- Ss go around the room and interview other Ss, they can also interview the members in their
group.

- T walks around, monitors, helps Ss formulate what they want to say but will not intervene to
correct form errors.

Planning
- Ss now write a report with their findings. Peer editing is encouraged.

- T goes around to advise students on language, suggesting phrases and helping Ss correct their
language.

Example:

Survey Results

The most popular brand is Gucci. Many people save money to buy their latest shirts. The other
popular brand is Chanel, which is loved among girls for their durability and cool looks.

Half of the class think Diamond Plaza is the perfect place to shop for clothes. Some think the
mall is full of stores that sell overpriced clothes and do not deserve the popularity.

Report

- T asks all the groups to read their reports to the whole class.

- Ss take notes, give comments and ask questions.

- T comments on the content of the reports.

Post-task listening:

- Ss listen to a recording of fluent speakers doing the same task, and compare the ways in which
they did the task themselves.
