CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

At the beginning of 2017 we would like to introduce cloud storage service for those who are not
aware of it or are unclear about the various features and benefits that are offered by a cloud. Data
storage and management is performed in the best manner possible using cloud storage platform.
Internet based host network is used to store all your data and that is termed as cloud. Individuals
and businesses can find storage options that they are looking for in a cloud. There are a lot of
cloud storage companies in the market and most of these companies have started offering
specific cloud storage plans for individuals and businesses. Streamlined storage plan focus will
give you all the necessary features. While creating a site backup is essential for your website’s
security, storing your backups in a secure location is equally important. Unfortunately, many
business owners rely on outdated storage solutions (such as flash drives or local servers), which
can cause a loss of vital data and an increase in unnecessary headaches. That’s where cloud
storage comes in. This stores your data on dedicated servers, and provides unlimited accessibility
wherever an internet connection is available, along with an increase in backup file security
(given that your files won’t be subjected to local server hacks or data loss)

Cloud storage is a digital storage solution that utilizes multiple servers (typically across multiple
locations) to safely store files (such as site backups). In the past few years, cloud storage has
grown in popularity and become a direct challenger to local storage, mainly down to the benefits
it provides:

1.2 Objective:

The objectives of this guidance are to: Clarify what cloud storage services can and cannot be
used; Detail what class of information can and cannot be placed into cloud storage services;
Highlight the specific privacy and information security risks that can exist when cloud storage
services are synchronized with devices that are not owned and/or controlled by the University;
and Inform staff where to get advice on the use of alternative technologies or services where it is
not appropriate to place information into a cloud storage service.

CHAPTER TWO

Literature review

2.1 History

Cloud storage is believed to have been invented by Joseph Carl Robnett

Licklider in the 1960s with his work on ARPANET to connect people
and data from anywhere at any time .In 1983, CompuServe offered its
consumer users a small amount of disk space that could be used to store
any files they chose to upload. In 1994, AT&T launched Persona Link
Services, an online platform for personal and business communication
and entrepreneurship. The storage was one of the first to be all web-
based, and referenced in their commercials as, "you can think of our
electronic meeting place as the cloud." .Launched in 1999, Files
Anywhere is the longest running cloud storage service on the planet.
Amazon Web Services introduced their cloud storage service AWS
S3 in 2006, and has gained widespread recognition and adoption as the
storage supplier to popular services such as Smug Mug, Drop box,
and Pinter est. In 2005, Box announced an online file sharing and
personal cloud content management service for businesses

2.2 What Is Cloud Storage

Cloud storage is defined as "the storage of data online in the cloud," where in a

company's data is stored in and accessible from multiple distributed and connected
resources that comprise a cloud.

Cloud storage can provide the benefits of greater accessibility and reliability; rapid
deployment; strong protection for data backup, archival and disaster
recovery purposes; and lower overall storage costs as a result of not having to
purchase, manage and maintain expensive hardware. There are many benefits to
using cloud storage, however, cloud storage does have the potential for security
and compliance concerns that are not associated with traditional storage systems.

2.3 Online Cloud Storage System:

Online Cloud Storage System PHP Project Code & Database This Online Cloud
Storage System Project developed in Net beans In this application user first needs
to register to the website and login with valid username and password, Then the
user has options to upload files, download files view files, view profile, view user,
update profiles.

3
2.4 Powerful cloud storage for all your files:

2.4.1 Back up any file or folder

No matter the file or folder you’re trying to back up—from photos and videos to large CAD files
and PowerPoint presentations—you can store it safely on Drop box.

2.4.2 Access your files from multiple devices

Drop box offers one central hub for online file storage. Whether you’re at work or on the road,
your files are synced across your devices and accessible anytime, anywhere. Access your Drop
box account with desktop apps on Windows and Mac, our mobile app for IOS or Android
devices, and on the web through your browser.

2.4.3 Protect your data

If your device is lost or stolen, rest easy knowing your data’s safe. Remote wipe lets you clear all
the files and folders from your missing device’s Drop box account. All of your files are secure in
cloud storage and backed up multiple times.

2.4.4 Recover your files

Accidentally delete a file or save a new version of a file you’re not happy with? No problem.
Drop box stores copies of all deleted files and folders for 30 days—or as many as 120 days for
Drop box Business users—including previous versions of files, so you can easily recover them.
We also provide confirmation warnings on the desktop when team members move or delete files.
They’ll know what happens when they take action, and fewer files will be lost accidentally.

2.4.5 Get the right amount of space for you

Need more storage space? Drop box has a range of plans that will offer you the right amount of
data storage—no matter how much you need.

4
2.4.5 Advantages of Cloud Storage
1. Usability: All cloud storage services reviewed in this topic have desktop folders for Mac’s
and PC’s. This allows users to drag and drop files between the cloud storage and their local
storage.
2. Bandwidth: You can avoid emailing files to individuals and instead send a web link to
recipients through your email.

3. Accessibility: Stored files can be accessed from anywhere via Internet connection.

4. Disaster Recovery:  It is highly recommended that businesses have an emergency backup
plan ready in the case of an emergency. Cloud storage can be used as a back‐up plan by
businesses by providing a second copy of important files. These files are stored at a remote
location and can be accessed through an internet connection.

5. Cost Savings: Businesses and organizations can often reduce annual operating costs by
using cloud storage; cloud storage costs about 3 cents per gigabyte to store data internally. Users
can see additional cost savings because it does not require internal power to store information
remotely.

Cloud storage always include:

PHP: PHP is a server side scripting language designed for web development but also used a
general-purpose programing language. Syntax:

MySQL: MYSQL with PHP, you can connect to and manipulate database MYSQL is the most
popular database system used with PHP. MYSQL is an open-source database management.

HTML introduction: HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is the set of markup symbols or
codes inserted in a file intended for display on a World Wide Web

JavaScript: JavaScript is a programming language commonly used in web development. It was

originally developed by Netscape as a means to add dynamic interactive elements to websites.

Cascading Style Sheet (CSS): CSS Is a style sheet language used for describing the
presentation of a document written in a markup language.

2.4.6 Disadvantages of cloud storage:

Below we outline some of the weaknesses of cloud storage:

1. Dependent on Internet Connection

Since cloud-based solutions depend on the speed of your Internet upload and download speed,
having a low latency can impede you from accessing the data in real time. Also, there are still
many areas around the globe where you can’t connect to the Internet.

2. Costs
For a corporation or a small business, cloud storage services are sound solutions. However, for
home devices, these costs may be too high to handle.

3. Hard Drives
Although the goal of cloud-based services is to minimize our dependency on physical storage
devices, a large number of business cloud storage services require the presence of a physical hard
drive as well.

4. Customer Support
Customer support is not one of the stronger points of cloud storage vendors. Cloud storage
providers usually instruct clients to take a closer look at the FAQ or follow online forums.

5. Privacy issues
After migrating the data to a third-party cloud storage provider, there is a bit of an issue
concerning who owns the information. Is it the company, as a client, or the cloud storage
provider?

6
3.1 Conclusion:

In conclusion, cloud storage is recently new technological development

that has the potential to have a great impact on the world. It has many
benefits that it provides to it users and businesses. For example, some of
the benefits that it provides to businesses, is that it reduces operating
cost by spending less on maintenance and software upgrades and focus
more on the businesses itself. But there are other challenges the cloud
storage must overcome. People are very skeptical about whether their
data is secure and private. There are no standards or regulations
worldwide provided data through cloud storage. Europe has data
protection laws but the US, being one of the most technological advance
nation, does not have any data protection laws. Users also worry about
who can disclose their data and have ownership of their data. But once,
there are standards and regulation worldwide, cloud storage will
revolutionize the future.

7
3.2 Recommendation:

provides many benefits over local storage and is the direction

the future is headed. With it you can access files from any
location on any device, are better backed up with redundant
systems and hardware, and it is more secure than your home
network. Some people are 100% in the cloud while others only
use it as a backup. Either way, if you are not taking advantage of
the cloud then you are possibly at risk and certainly behind the
eight ball.
