EBOLA VIRUS

Ebola disease was identified in 2 simultaneous outbreaks in 1976, one in South Sudan
and one in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. • Since 1976, 25 Ebola outbreaks
occurred mostly in central Africa. • The 2014–2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa was
the largest and most complex.
EBOLA VIRUS HISTORY
Ebola Virus: A notoriously deadly virus that causes severe symptoms, the most
prominent being high fever and massive internal bleeding. Ebola virus kills as
many as 90% of the people it infects. It is one of the viruses that is capable of
causing hemorrhagic (bloody) fever. Epidemics of Ebola virus have occurred
mainly in African countries including Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of
Congo), Gabon, Uganda, the Ivory Coast, and Sudan. Ebola virus is a hazard to
laboratory workers and anyone who is exposed to it. Ebola virus is transmitted by
contact with blood, feces, or body fluids from an infected person or by direct
contact with the virus

Diagnosis of EBOLA VIRUS

Diagnosing Ebola virus disease (EVD) shortly after infection can be difficult.
Early symptoms of EVD such as fever, headache, and weakness are not
specific to Ebola virus infection and often are seen in patients with other
more common diseases, like malaria and typhoid fever .

symptoms
Symptoms of Ebola virus disease occur suddenly up to 21 days after
exposure and include fever, headache, sore throat, joint and muscle aches,
and weakness, followed by diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Some
patients may bleed inside and outside the body. A person is contagious
when early symptoms start. Fever.
What is the mode of transmission of
Ebola?
The Ebola virus is transmitted among humans through close and direct
physical contact with infected bodily fluids, the most infectious being blood,
faeces and vomit. The Ebola virus has also been detected in breast milk,
urine and semen.Oct 6, 2014

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT OF EBOLA VIRUS ?

For two of those treatments, called regeneron (REGN-EB3) and mAb114,
overall survival was much higher. These two antiviral drugs currently
remain in use for patients with confirmed Ebola. Drugs that are being
developed to treat EVD work by stopping the virus from making copies of
itself
Are there any treatments or vaccines for
Ebola?
There is no approved medicine or vaccine to treat or prevent Ebola.
How can you protect yourself from
Ebola virus?

about current epidemics by checking the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention website.
