seaplanes in Vermont and working on
airplanes.
“Two countries from Africa want to come
to Fiji,” Dr Sahu Khan said.
“But they want 50,000 euros ($F119,115)
as playing fee. Plus we will have to pay
for their accommodation, travel and meals
here. They want to stay for two weeks. We
cant afford all that and have rejected that
offer. The budget for the Pacific Games
will be drawn up after the first camp. We
hope to do that by January 20.”

The Pacific Games will be held from
August 28 to September 12. Fiji lost to
New Caledonia 1-0 in the final of the 2007
South Pacific Games in Samoa.

University announces Dean
appointments
The Fiji National University (FNU) has
announced two new Dean appointments.
Dr Eci Nabalarua has been appointed Dean
of the College of Humanities and Education.
Professor Paras Nath has been appointed
Dean of the College of Agriculture, Fisheries
and Forestry (CAFF).
A statement issued by the university said Dr
Nabalarua had over 20 years of experience
in the tertiary education sector.

the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

“The letter advises the Fiji Government
that the NAM Co-ordination Bureau has
endorsed Fiji’s application to become a full
member of NAM,” Ratu Inoke said.
He said in the letter Mr Gheit congratulated

Australian scholarship upscale pleases Minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs &
International Cooperation Ratu Inoke
Kubuabola expressed his appreciation for
Australia’s decision to increase the number
of Australian Development Scholarships
(ADS) to Fiji from 20 to 40 awards (24
Postgraduate and 16 Undergraduate) for
the 2011 intake.
Education and training are fundamental
building blocks for economic and human
development.
They open up opportunities for
employment and economic activities
otherwise not possible, and provide both
the incentive and necessary skills for
economic progress.
Furthermore, they deliver benefits
downstream in health, governance,
productivity, gender equality and nation-
building.
“I am therefore pleased with the
Australian Government’s decision to
upscale its scholarship award to Fiji
because this will help us overcome some
of our impediments to higher education
and improve education and training
opportunities for our people.” Ratu Inoke
said.
“I am hopeful, however that Australia
can further increase the number of
awards in the next five years given their
acknowledgement, that the latest increase
is due to the high success rate amongst
our candidates and their contributions on
their return to Fiji and the high demand
and quality of our candidates.”
In 2009 there were 27 Fijian recipients
of Australian Regional Development
Scholarships, who graduated with
qualifications in health, agriculture,
engineering, environment, business and
governance.
In 2010 a further 10 Fijian recipients of
Australian Development Scholarships
(ADS) attained qualifications in health,
governance, engineering and agriculture.
During 2005-2009 Fijian scholarship
recipients had a 96 per cent academic
success rate, and a 2008 study showed that
ADS alumni were broadly contributing
to economic growth, with 85 per cent of
respondents employed—the majority in
our public service.
“With such a high return on investment
I am hopeful that Australia can further
increase scholarship awards for Fiji in the
next five years,” Ratu Inoke said.
The Australian Government in its 2009–
10 Budget Statement acknowledged the
growing importance of education when
it said: “Education is a flagship sector
of Australia’s increased aid program
and will become the program’s largest
sector with support extending from basic
education to technical and vocational
skills training and improving tertiary level
qualifications.”
“A recent report issued by the Australian
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade
References Committee observed that the
Australian scholarships program was set
to double in size over five years to 19,000
scholarships for the Asia–Pacific region.
I am hopeful Fiji will again be able to
benefit from this increased largesse,” the
minister said.

LONGER OPENING HOURS FOR BDM REGISTRY ANNOUNCED BY AG

The Attorney General and Minister
for Justice Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
has announced that in order to assist
members of the public in particular
parents and guardians, the Births, Deaths
and Marriages (BDM) Offices in Suva,
Lautoka and Labasa will extend its
opening hours throughout the month of
January.
From Monday January 10, 2011 to Friday
January 28, 2011, the opening hours for
Suva and Lautoka offices will be from
8.00am to 7.00pm during working days,
and the opening hours for the Labasa
office will be from 8.00am to 6.00pm
during working days. The registries will
remain open during the lunch hour also.
In addition, the BDM Offices in Suva,
Lautoka and Labasa will be open to
members of the public on four Saturdays
(January 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2011) from
9.00am to 1.00pm.
“The decision to extend the Registry’s
opening hours is to give parents
and guardians lot more flexibility in
accessing the BDM office. This is part
of government’s initiative to provide
improved services to all Fijians,” Mr
Sayed-Khaiyum said.
The Minister is urging the members of
the public to make use of these extended
hours of service.
He has also reminded the people that they
can obtain extracts of Birth Certificates at
any of the Post Fiji outlets throughout the
country.

Australians put their feet up in Fiji

There is a story repeated all over Fiji.
An Australian family visits and is
overwhelmed by the warmth of the
welcome extended to them, and
especially their children.
They are so charmed by the locals, and
so relaxed by the island paradise, they
return year after year.
The story went a chapter further with
Jay Whyte, an Australian who first
visited Fiji in 1991 and returned in 2006
with a dream.
As a youngster, Whyte had been
introduced to the “real Fiji”
when a new-found friend, Pita,
took him home to his village
of Draiba.
As an adult he returned,
determined to give other
tourists a hands-on
introduction to Fijian culture,
combined with the fun of jet
boating, which he had tried
and loved in New Zealand.
The result is the hugely popular
Sigatoka River Safaris.
It’s an overcast morning when we
are picked up from Denarau’s Westin
Resort and Spa, but this only makes the
drive through the Sigatoka Valley to the
launch spot more magical.
Known as Fiji’s “salad bowl”, the
valley’s precious plantings of corn
and cassava, and its ancient, mossy
mahogany trees are shrouded in mist.
At the jetty we meet our cheeky guide
Josh Ratukuna - who prefers “Captain
Jack” - and soon the tranquility is
shattered.
Captain Jack has us hurtling towards
our destination, Vunarewa village, at
a pace that makes even our designated
“chief” for the day - a softly spoken,
65-year-old English doctor - shriek in
delight.
In between Jack’s sharp turns and
360-spins, he does slow down at times
to give his passengers a colourful potted
history of Fiji, the river and its people.
It’s a short clamber up the riverbank
to Vunarewa, where we don sulus
(sarongs) for a tour of the village and a
traditional kava ceremony.
The women then carefully lay out a
delicious lunch of tropical fruits such
as pineapple and breadfruit, a local
spinach and chicken, which is worked
off with traditional dancing.
Meanwhile, back on Denarau Island,
a distinctly Australian flavour is
developing.
Guests of the Westin Resort and Spa
and the Sheraton Hotel have been quick
to embrace two Aussie restaurants that
have opened their homes away from
home in the resort hot spot.
The Westin is now home to Moo Moo:
The Wine Bar and Grill, which is
ordinarily based in Brisbane and the
Gold Coast.
This incarnation has a Fijian feel, but
the idea is the same - it’s anything but
your typical steakhouse.
The specialty is a one-kilogram, spice-
rubbed Wagyu rump, sliced at the table
and shared between two, three or four
diners. It’s served with a variety of sides,
most notably a delicious pear, parmesan
and rocket salad, and positively melts in
your mouth.
Foodies are also flocking to Flying
Fish at the Sheraton, for renowned
Sydney chef Peter Kuruvita’s signature
Sri Lankan curry, starring plump king
prawns.
As you would expect, the restaurant
is every bit as good as the one-hat
headquarters in Pyrmont - and maybe
even better as you dine at a table by the
sea, with your feet tucked into the soft
white sand.

Family, friends farewell prominent lawyer

Politicians, relatives, families and friends
of the Fa family paid their last respects
at the Tamavua Seventh-day Adventist
Church for prominent lawyer Tevita Fa at
his funeral service.
The late Mr Fa was a prominent local
lawyer and an influential figure in city
politics. He was later laid to rest at the
Suva Cemetery.
Family and friends recalled the late lawyer,
who died last week aged 65, as a kind and
generous person with a keen wit and a
disarming sense of humour.
“He had that typical Tongan and Lau
wit and he was a wonderful story teller,”
former Cabinet minister Poseci Bune said.
“He was the kind of guy that other people
liked to be around, so he drew a crowd. I
think he was popular everywhere he went.”
An active figure in State and local politics,
his memorial service drew political figures,
including the Head of State President Ratu
Epeli Nailatikau.
“He was a great guy who did a lot of
things quietly behind the scenes for a lot of
people in this town,” said Hasmukh Patel,
a former Suva lawyer who is now a Senior
Court Barrister in New Zealand.
Mr Patel described Mr Fa as a close friend
from childhood.
“I think he always wanted to be behind the
scenes, but if people needed help, he was
always there to help somebody out,” he
said.
“He was the point man. He made that
happen, Fiji has lost a great son who
should be remembered for his bravery and
his death is deeply felt.”
His brother, Isireli Fa, a lawyer who
shared a practice with him for more than
10 years, recalled him as “very generous
with his money and time”.
The younger Mr Fa said he and his late
brother’s divergent political views often
led to spirited debates whenever they got
together.
“He was just a really good guy,” said Suva
lawyer Qoriniasi Bale, who was Attorney-
General during the Qarase government
and who came to know Fa well over the
years.
“He was a happy-go-lucky person; the
type of guy who would give you the
shirt off his back for anybody that was a
friend,” he said.
Tevita Fa died at the Suva Private Hospital
on December 30 after a long battle with
illness.
His brother said he was admitted in
November after a mild stroke and was
also diabetic.
“My family, my mum, we are all proud
of Tevita , of his life. He always achieved
what he set out to do,” he said.
“He lived a happy life and a full life.”
Mr Fa studied at Queen Victoria School.
He had some prominent clients in his
lifetime, including former Prime Minister
Laisenia Qarase and businessman Ballu
Khan.
Tevita Fa is survived by his wife Ana
Fa, sons Sione, Finau, Taunivalu and
daughters Kava and Akanesi.

A Chinese vessel carrying $4.1 million
worth of construction and civil engineering
equipment and tools has arrived in Fiji.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama said the equipment and tools
will be managed by the Republic of Fiji
Military Forces Engineers.
“ It will be deployed by the RFMF engineers
to further drive and enhance our rural
development programmes and projects
throughout the country,” Commodore
Bainimarama said.
The Deputy Secretary Development
Cooperation and Facilitation in the Prime
Minister’s office, Eliki Bomani said the
shipment is part of the Government of the
Peoples Republic of China’s direct aid
grant project to Fiji.
Handicraft vendors cry
foul
CONCERNS have been raised that
increased activities for cruise passengers
have resulted in a drop in handicraft
sales.
Suva Handicraft Market Vendors and
Manufacturers Association president
Mahendra Singh said they were struggling
to pay stall fees.
His comments follows the visit by P&O
cruise liner Pacific Dawn at the King’s
Wharf.
“We have been around for 51 years
promoting tourism and building the
economy,” he said.
“I must commend the authorities for all
they have done to ensure tourists enjoy
themselves.
“However, the vendors have been deprived

Australian tourist
pleads guilty to assault
An Australian tourist, who is on a
honeymoon in Fiji, was fined $200
by the Magistrates Court in Suva after
pleading guilty to an assault.
Police Prosecutor Luke Qerewaqa told
the court that Thomas McDowell was
invited for a drink by a Solomon Island
student at a prominent nightclub in
Suva on January 3.

Compensation unlikely
THE Fiji Sugar Corporation says there are
no plans to compensate growers for their
unharvested crop.
This was confirmed by FSC spokesman
Samu Railoa.
Earlier the National Farmers Union had
stated it would seek compensation to help
make up for the farmers’ loss as a result of
standover cane.
However, Mr Railoa said: “There are no
plans to compensate growers for their
unharvested crop as the crop will still be
available for crushing in the 2011 season”.
Union president Surendra Lal said the
growers needed to be compensated to pay
for land rent and fertiliser.

Mr Lal added that harvesting has stopped
and that the quality of cane would also
deteriorate.
“The growers were seeking compensation
because many of them had burnt cane in
fields for crushing following advice by
FSC officials.
“Now the burnt cane will have no value.”

Estimate by growers’ union

refuted
THE Fiji Sugar Corporation has refuted
claims by the National Farmers Union that
more than 80,000 tonnes of cane remain
standing in Northern cane fields.
FSC spokesman Samu Railoa said the
standover cane was less than half the
amount claimed by the union.
“The initial estimate of standover crop
in the Labasa mill area is close to 30,000
tonnes of cane,” Mr Railoa said.
“Field officers are carrying out a survey in
the field to verify the figure.”
Mr Railoa said that the standover figure in
2009 was close to 10,000 tonnes.
He added that the value of sugar produced
from standover cane would deteriorate.
“The value of sugar will deteriorate
because of climate change and age and the
worth will certainly not be what it was in
June and July.”
However, union president Surendra Lal
remains steadfast that the union’s estimated
of 80,000 tonnes of standing case is sound.
“The 80,000 tonnes of cane is worth
$3.6million, provided the forecast price of
$45 per tonne,” Mr Lal said.
“This is a huge loss to the farmers and to
the FSC.”

Fijian man dies at sea in NZ
The New Zealand Police Dive squad has
located the body of a 27-year-old Fijian
who was reported to have been in trouble
off the Wellington coast near Seatoun
Monday afternoon.
Anare Roqica Nayacatoga is reported
to have been living in New Zealand for
almost 3 years.
His teammates were expecting to spend
the summer with him on the rugby field
but instead, found themselves carrying
his body from the unforgiving waters of
Wellington’s south coast.
As black-clad police divers stood silently,
hands clasped, on the water’s edge, wailing
family members followed the body as it
was carried up the rocky beach and into the
back of the waiting white hearse, bringing
an end to a night of uncertainty.
Searchers had spent the previous night and
several hours searching for the body of the
27-year-old rugby sevens enthusiast, who
drowned while diving for mussels with his
cousin Dan Raikabula and another friend at
Seatoun’s Steeple Rock.
Police say Nayacatoga, who played for
Porirua’s Pacific Warriors sevens team, got
cramp in the choppy sea while swimming
in strong currents from one rock to another.
Pacific Warriors team manager Jone
Salauneune said Nayacatoga had called out
Raikabula for help, but then said he was all
right. When Raikabula reached the rock,
he turned to find his cousin and team-mate
had disappeared.

Mr Prasad said Tavua would be different
from other towns with the installation of

“We have just completed levelling the
surface and construction will start soon,”

to the family. “They were quite shattered.
He was an outstanding son.”

to all the people who searched for their
son. “They were very appreciative of their

good last year and we want to improve
them because we have been receiving

Mr Prasad said the council would also
beautify the town by planting trees and
putting up road signs.
“The economy of Tavua is slowly
regaining and we’re optimistic many
investors will set up new businesses
once all the development is in place,”
he said.

Tourism Fiji targets Indian NZ and Fiji and sign cattle

Tourism Fiji is now targeting the Indian
tourism market.
Chairman Patrick Wong said that the
specialist program is to get travel agents in
India familiar with what Fiji has to offer and
this is a totally new market.
Wong said the Fiji Matai specialist program
is targeted at India as it is an emerging market
and as a result Tourism Fiji is adopting a new
strategy where they will be meeting the travel
agents in India on a one-on-one basis.
Wong added that this time around, Tourism
Fiji is going offline where they are meeting
up with the agents and will be working on
getting these agents to come over to Fiji.

Kapadia said there is a push for Indian
people to seek destinations like Fiji with
Fiji recording a 30 percent growth in tourist
arrivals from India for last year alone.

in the dairy and beef industry. Plans were
laid last year for the importation of the
livestock.”
He says the government spent approximately
$1.3 milion on this project which includes
the upgrading of the Koronivia Research
Station to accommodate the livestock.
The imported cattle and bulls will replace
those that died of Brusellosis and flooding

Social Welfare recipients No VAT on stationery

receive handy cards
Social Welfare recipients around the country
have started to receive their Westpac Handy
Cards.
All the recipients under the family assistance
programme received a set of Westpac Handy
Cards, pin numbers and instruction manuals
that guide people how to use ATM machines.
About 17,000 recipients under the Social
Welfare Scheme will be able to access their
bank accounts and withdraw money using
the cards.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry
of Social Welfare, Govind Sami said the
usage of bank accounts would enable family
assistance recipients to save their money.
Mr Sami said the recipients won’t be charged
any service fees and would be allowed to
carry out 10 fee-free withdrawals per month.
One of the recipients, Roshni Devi said the
implementation of the electronic banking
system was good.
“In previous years, we had to line up at post
offices to get our money but now we can
withdraw from anywhere at any time with
ease.” Mrs Devi said.
The recipients under the family assistance
programme receive $60 for family assistance
and $30 for food.
Fiji Retailers Association president,
Himmat Lodhia has welcomed
government’s decision to remove VAT on
school stationary until February 28th.
In a statement, Lodhia said the zero rating
on school stationary is a good move as it
will assist the many borderline families
which are not able to afford many back to
school items for their children.
“The parents will also have more spare
change to buy other goods which would
have been difficult to purchase with the
new VAT at 15%.” he said
He also thanked Prime Minister,
Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama for
intervening and bringing relief to the

Tributes for Canterbury soldier Joseva Vatubua
Joseva Vatubua
A HIDDEN bomb killed a Canterbury-
based soldier with “the heart of a lion” in
Afghanistan on New Year’s Day.
Private Joseva Vatubua, 24, from the
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, died
whilst on operation in Helmand when
explosives hidden in a compound wall
detonated.
The Fijian infantryman had been targeting
enemy positions north of Saidabad Kalay
in the Nahr-e Saraj district with the 5 Scots
Battalion.
Company Sergeant Major David McGrath
said: “Pte Joseva Vatubua was a large figure
of a man who was as strong as an ox. He
had the heart of a lion and was nerveless in
the face of enemy action.”
Pte Vatubua grew up in Fiji and joined
the British army in 2007. He had hoped
to rise through the ranks. He had a wife,
Claudette.

Lt Col Adam Griffiths, the regiment’s
commanding officer, said: “The Argylls
have lost a loyal, well loved and respected
young soldier.
“Pte Joseva Vatubua, known to everyone
as “Big Joe”, approached everything he
did with an infectious sense of humour and

do well to emulate.
“Fearless in battle, while empathetic to the
predicament of Afghanistan, he was at his
best on operations, demonstrating a real
awareness and understanding of what he
was being asked to do.
“It was always a wonderful sight to see this
mountain of a man surrounded by children
when on patrol.
“Pte Joseva Vatubua was a strong and
brave young soldier. We have lost a truly
marvellous young man.”
And Lt Col Andrew Harrison MBE,
commanding officer of the battle group,
said; “Pte Vatubua was a proud, adopted
Jock and a warrior of fearsome repute.
“His scale was colossal; he dominated
the front row, dwarfed his machine gun
and delivered fiery, martial passion in
abundance.
“But for most of the time he was
understated, calm and simply kind. He
was the epitome of generosity, a loved and
revered husband, father and friend. We will
never forget him.”
Fiji and China sign new Aid
Agreement
The Governments of Fiji and the
Peoples Republic of China have
signed a new Economic and Technical
Cooperation Agreement valued at
$8million.
In signing the aid agreement with

of the Peoples Republic of China
Dr Han Zhiqiang, Prime Minister
Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama
applauded the Chinese support in
helping develop Fiji.
“This morning we have just signed a
new agreement on further technical
and economic cooperation between
our two countries,” he said.
Under the agreement, the Chinese
Government will be standing ready to
provide Fiji with gratuitous aid to the
value of 30 million RMB Yuan or just
over 8.38 million Fijian dollars.
“Details of account procedures and
disbursement will be concluded

Development Bank,” Commodore
Bainimarama said.
“But, as in previous technical and
economic agreements between
our two countries, this agreement

Food labels monitored
Items sold in shops and supermarkets
across the country will now be monitored
for food labeling.
The Ministry of Health will visit shops
and supermarkets to check that food items
with foreign language labels are not sold
to the public. This was confirmed by the
ministry’s spokesman Peni Namotu.
“Shops have been advised to remove any
foreign language labeled food products
from their shelves,” Mr Namotu said.
“There are still some shops found selling
the products despite the warnings.”
Mr Namotu said food items with foreign
language labels did not comply with the
Food Safety Regulations and the items
would be confiscated. The regulations
came into effect on June 5, last year.
Food producers, wholesalers and retailers
were given until October 14 to fully
comply with the regulations.

A national lottery organised to fund Fiji’s
participation at this year’s Rugby World
Cup could instead deepen its financial
problems as it faces a fine of $F125,000
(NZ$106,500) for discounting tickets.
Fiji’s Commerce Commission threatened to
impose the fine after the Fiji Rugby Union
reduced the price of tickets from F$20
(US$11) to F$10 to boost sluggish sales.
The Commission has given the union five
days to comply with a series of demands
to avoid the fine, which would severely
damage its already perilous financial

believes that the distribution of such items
will not be a problem if border control is
tightened.

control systems and enforce relevant
regulations that would effectively and
efficiently control the safety and quality of
imported food and agricultural products.

FIJI Water under legal fire
A Southern California woman has sued
the FIJI Water company in a class action
complaint that alleges the firm’s claim of
having a carbon-negative product amounts to
false and misleading advertising that sways
consumers to buy the pricey bottled water.
The law firm Newport Trial Group filed
the suit on December 20 in the US District
Court in Santa Ana on behalf of Southern
California resident Desiree Worthington,
who is described as having purchased FIJI
Water repeatedly in the past four years -- a
period that roughly coincides with the start
of FIJI Water’s carbon-negative marketing
campaign.
FIJI Water announced the campaign in
November 2007 as part of a broader
plan to make the bottling, packaging
and transportation of the product more
environmentally responsible.
The initiative followed an onslaught of
criticism of the bottled water industry.
An article in Fast Company earlier that year
noted: “And in Fiji, a state-of-the-art factory
spins out more than a million bottles a day of
the hippest bottled water on the US market
today, while more than half the people in
Fiji do not have safe, reliable drinking water.
Which means it is easier for the typical
American in Beverly Hills or Baltimore
to get a drink of safe, pure, refreshing FIJI
Water than it is for most people in Fiji.”
On its site, FIJI Water says: “Since 2008,
FIJI Water has been a carbon-negative brand.
We are the first and only major bottled water
company to make this commitment, under
which we will continue to offset 120 per cent
of our emissions. That means that we are not
only mitigating our environmental impact
but also making up for a little bit of someone
else’s.”
The method FIJI Water uses to calculate its
offsets is at the heart of the recently filed suit.
The complaint says: “Defendants’ carbon-
negative claim is deceptive and misleading
... reasonable consumers of FIJI water
understand Defendants’ ‘carbon-negative’
claim as meaning that FIJI water’s current
operations remove more carbon from the
atmosphere than they release into it. This is
simply not the case; in reality, FIJI water’s
operations do not remove more carbon
from the atmosphere than they release
into it. Instead, they use a discredited

carbon accounting method called ‘forward
crediting.’
“To reduce their carbon footprint,
corporations purchase carbon ‘offset credits,’
which is a generic term for any tradable
certificate or permit representing the right
of the purchaser to emit one ton of carbon
dioxide. ‘Standard offset credits’ represent
carbon reductions that have already taken
place. By contrast, ‘forward offset credits’
represent carbon reductions that may or may
not take place up to several decades in the
future.”
The suit contends the carbon negative
claim “induced countless consumers to
pay a premium for bottled water” and cites
comparative prices showing that FIJI Water
costs about twice as much as other well-
known brands of bottled water. Worthington,
the only named plaintiff in the lawsuit thus
far, “would not have purchased FIJI Water
at a premium if she knew that Defendants’
current operations did not remove more
carbon from the atmosphere than they
release into it.”
FIJI Water, whose environmental practices
continued to draw fire even before the
lawsuit, did not respond to requests for
comment, but describes its offset program
on its site:
“To guarantee the quality and long-term
benefits of our offset program, we have
partnered with Conservation International
(CI), a leading conservation organisation,
and invested in an extensive forest restoration
project in Fiji. With the first 250 acres of
new trees already planted and growing,
the resulting 2000-acre forest will deliver
key global as well as regional benefits,
including long-term carbon sequestration,
preservation and restoration of natural
wildlife habitats and biodiversity in the
region, protection of critical watersheds, and
income opportunities for hundreds in local
Fijian communities.”
Worthington’s lawsuit also names FIJI
Water’s parent company Roll International
Corporation as a defendant and seeks any
legal and equitable remedies -- including
monetary damages, statutory penalties,
attorneys’ fees and other costs -- deemed
appropriate by the court.
The Newport Trial Group declined to
comment on the suit.

Development Scholarships (ADS) to Fiji
this year from 20 to 40 awards and 24 are

FSC turns down request
THE Fiji Sugar Corporation has turned
down a request by the Sugar Cane Growers
Council to extend crushing at the Rarawai
mill past the January 7 deadline issued by
the Sugar Industry Tribunal last week.
FSC spokesman Samuela Railoa said the
corporation would stop crushing on Friday
as planned.
“The current supply of cane coming into
the mill is 99.9 per cent burnt cane,” he
said.
“So it is uneconomical for both the growers
and FSC to continue past the January 7
date.” Meanwhile, the Rarawai mill stopped

Pakistani governor killed by own bodyguard
Salman Taseer was one of the most
moderate political voices in the main
ruling Pakistan People’s Party.
One of Pakistan’s high-profile provincial
governors has been shot dead by one of
his own bodyguards in a brazen daylight
attack in the capital Islamabad.
The governor of Punjab province, Salman
Taseer, was shot dead at an up-market
shopping centre.
The Punjab governor was an outspoken
critic of religious extremists and had called
for the scrapping of the death penalty for
the crime of blasphemy.

911 DURING BREAK-IN
Two children who hid and called for
help when their house was broken
into Tuesday are earning high praise
from Calgary's police chief.
A 12-year-old boy and 12-year-old
girl hid in a closet in their southeast
Calgary home on Tuesday afternoon
when burglars kicked in the front
door of the house.
The brother and sister called police
using a cellphone, but the two men
who broke into the house managed to
escape as police arrived.
They made off with some remote
controls, but electronic goods they'd
stashed in the garage to take with
them were left behind. A TV was
dropped on the ground and smashed
in the process, the family said.
'We just stopped breathing'
Chief Rick Hanson said the kids are
being considered for a bravery award.
"I do want to just say that those kids
deserve a lot of recognition and a lot
of praise for the way that they handled
the situation," Hanson said at a news
conference Wednesday morning.
"They were composed, and they did
everything we could expect them to
do: took themselves out of harm's
way, got the information to the right
people that could help at the right
time, and the response was very, very
quick."
The girl, whose name is being
withheld because her family fears
for their safety, told the media what
happened. She got up shortly after
noon, and was about to join her
brother watching TV when they heard
loud knocking and doorbell ringing
downstairs, she said.
The kids made their way to the
door and tried to look through the
peephole, but it was blocked by the
Christmas wreath.
Her brother looked through a window
and saw a strange, "weird" man, the
girl said.
The knocking grew louder, so her
brother grabbed a phone and they
made their way upstairs, she said.
"The moment we shut the closet
doors, we heard them come in," the

She said her brother did a great job of
calmly telling the 911 operator what
was going on.
When one of the burglars came into
her room, she said it felt like her
heart stopped.
"My head was pounding. We just
stopped breathing, we didn't want to
make one bit of noise."

After rifling through her dresser
drawers, the man left, she said.
Minutes later, the burglars took off
and she heard the loud voices of
police officers in the house.
"When they opened the closet … we
were just so happy," the girl said. "I
started crying, [and] my brother said
he wanted to give them a hug."
Their mother was stuck in traffic
at the time, and had a phone call
from her son while the burglary was
underway, but the line went dead.
She said she talked to police shortly
thereafter, however, and learned that
everything was fine.
"I was on Cloud 9, actually," she said.
"I was just so grateful and happy that
my kids are OK."
The 911 operator who took the call
did "a wonderful job" of hurriedly
dispatching police, Hanson said.
Police said Wednesday afternoon
that they'd made an arrest of the
alleged wheelman in the breaking
and entering. Justin Stewart Key, a
20-year-old Calgary man, has been
charged with breaking and entering,
and destroying or damaging property.
Police are looking for two more
suspects. One is described as a
Caucasian man with a slim build.
He was wearing a tuque and a light
brown, or tan, three-quarter-length
jacket.
The second suspect is described as an
adult male.
Police said they believe the two
suspects who were in the house made
off on foot and allegedly stole a
truck from a nearby construction site
that was later recovered. The driver
of the getaway car, which was also
stolen, had taken off when police
approached.
The mother of the two kids said that
apart from some trouble sleeping
Tuesday night, she thinks they're
going to be OK.
She said she only recently let the two
kids stay at home by themselves, and
stressed the importance of parents
talking to their children about what to
do if someone breaks in while they're
home alone.

District, Punjab, and currently lives in
Merritt. He was educated at the University
of Victoria and the University of British
Columbia, where he obtained a Bachelor
of Arts Degree in History and South Asia
Area Studies. Harry is the founder of the
group that established the Chair of Punjabi
and Sikh Studies at the University of
British Columbia.
Before his election to the Legislature,
Harry was an Employment Counsellor for
the federally-sponsored Merritt Outreach
Program from 1986 – 1991. He has also
worked at MOSAIC in Vancouver. Harry is
a former member of the IWA Local 1-417
when he spent 11 summers working in the
sawmill industry in Interior B.C. Harry is
also a former co-owner of a sporting goods
store.
From 2001 – 2006 Harry owned his own
business that was involved in international
development and technology transfer to
developing countries, namely in the field
of environmental technologies and power
generation.
Harry and his wife, Rani, are the proud
parents of two sons and one daughter.

$50 million lotto payout delayed

Initially, 19 people claimed to be
the winners of the $50-million Lotto
Max jackpot. Additional claimants
have since come forward.
Partners in a $50 million Lotto Max
jackpot who bought things in advance of
receiving their share of the winnings will
be scrambling to cover bills after a payout
delay was announced Tuesday.
“I just think this is bittersweet,” ticket-
buyer Natalie Damianidis told the media
after the Ontario Lottery and Gaming
Corp. (OLG) decided to launch a review
based on other people’s claims to the
windfall.
“I’m tired of this,” Damianidis said in a
brief interview.
“I know who the people are who I have on
the list,” she said.
Damiandis said she organized a pool with
Bell Canada co-workers four weeks ago,
buying $95 worth of tickets — “at $5 per
person.”
OLG announced it has put payouts for the
New Year’s Eve top ticket on hold “due
to additional claimants coming forward
and claiming an interest in a portion of
the prize.
“A rigorous prize claim review process
needs to be completed before any prize is
paid out,” said the OLG statement.
Staff at an Esso On the Run outlet at
Victoria Park and McNicoll Aves. said
a woman identifying herself as a Bell
employee brought the winning ticket
in the Dec. 31 draw to the station early
Monday for verification.
Calling her a “regular customer,” Kumar
Arumugam said “she didn’t know how
much ... but she knew it was a big amount.”
In addition to sharing Ontario’s biggest-
ever lottery payout with 18 partners, the
ticket-holder’s winning combination of
numbers also qualified for a “free ticket,”
Arumugam said.
By mid-day Monday, after cheers and
happy screams were heard throughout the
Bell building on Borough Dr. — beside
the Scarborough Town Centre — none of
the partners in the big buck bonanza pool
remained in the building. A source said
two other members of the pool work at a
Bell facility in Mississauga.
The big winners were expected to collect
their big prize as early as Thursday
afternoon at the OLG offices at Yonge and
Dundas Sts.
Spokesman Sarah Kiriliuk earlier said
because there was a “huge backlog” of
paperwork when the gaming office opened
Tuesday after the holidays, officials
recommended the lottery winners come in
Wednesday.
“If we can verify their claims and there
are no insiders (meaning, for example, no
relatives work at a lottery retailer) then
they could pick up their prizes as early as
Thursday,” Kiriliuk said.
Each person was expected to receive
about $2.6 million.
OLG put the brakes on handing out any
cheques, stressing its “commitment is to
ensure all lottery players are protected and
the right prize is paid to the right person
every time.”
Agency officials said it is the first time
a single ticket sold in Ontario won the
$50-million jackpot since Lotto Max was
launched in 2009 and this is the sixth
jackpot for that amount in Lotto Max
history.
There were rumours circulating that the
Lucky 19 would meet at the Borough Dr.
building and ride a limousine to the OLG
offices around 9 a.m. Tuesday, but no one
showed up.
“That was before we suggested to them
coming in tomorrow,” Kiriliuk said.
Bell Canada’s Borough Dr. call centre was
abuzz with other employees who were
still shocked by their co-workers’ good
fortune. The majority of winners didn’t
show up for work Tuesday.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican, was elected
the 38th governor of California in 2003 and
left office Jan. 3. He is perhaps better known
for his roles in movies such as The Terminator
series, True Lies, and Kindergarten Cop. He
didn’t take on any starring film roles while
governor, although he does have an uncredited
appearance in the 2010 action movie, The
Expendables, and Terminator Salvation in
2009. Prior to acting, he was a bodybuilder.
He has said he is considering a return to acting.

Plane diverted to Toronto after pilot spills coffee

A United Airlines flight from Chicago to
Germany was diverted to Toronto’s Pearson
Airport late Monday night after the pilot
spilled a coffee, Transport Canada reports.
The coffee interfered with the plane’s
navigation and communication system and
sent out distress signals including code 7500
— unlawful interference, or a hijacking —
and code 7600, which means the plane has
lost communications.
“With the help of their company dispatch staff,
the flight crew was confirmed the problem to
be a NAV(navigation)/communication issue
and not a valid code 7500. The flight crew
initially diverted to return to Chicago but
subsequently declared an emergency ... and
diverted to Toronto,” the report on Transport
Canada’s civil aviation daily occurrence
reporting system says.
“Staff reported that the United Airlines, Inc.
corporate office had indicated that the pilot
in command had inadvertently squawked
a 7500 code after spilling coffee on the
aircraft’s radio equipment.”
After the communication issues, the flight
crew made the decision to land the Boeing 777
in Toronto around 10 p.m. Monday. United
Airlines sent a second plane to Toronto,
which picked up the 255 passengers and took
them back to Chicago. The passengers were
able to board a fight to Frankfurt, Germany
on Tuesday.

You rub and rub your eyes, but they won’t
stop itching. When you look in the mirror,
they are red and puffy. What’s going
on? Do you have a strange sickness? No
— you have a common problem called
conjunctivitis. It’s better known as pinkeye.
What Is Conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis (say: kon-junk-tih-vy-tis)
is the most common eye problem kids
can have. It can cause redness, itching,
inflammation (say: in-fla-may-shun) or
swelling, and a clear or white, yellow, or
greenish gooey liquid to collect in the eyes.
It’s called pinkeye because the white part
of the eye and inside the eyelids become
red or pink when you have it. Pinkeye
may start in one eye, but many people
get conjunctivitis in both eyes at the same
time. Conjunctivitis usually doesn’t hurt,
but itching can be annoying. Sometimes it
feels like you have an eyelash or a speck of
sand in your eye and can’t get it out.
Adults, especially parents and teachers
who spend a lot of time with kids, can
get conjunctivitis too. Conjunctivitis lasts
a short time, usually about a week or
less, and then goes away by itself or after
treatment.
How Do I Get Conjunctivitis?
Kids get conjunctivitis for different
reasons. Most kids get it from bacteria
(say: bak-teer-ee-uh) or viruses. This
is called infectious (say: in-fek-shus)
conjunctivitis. Bacteria can be seen only
with a powerful microscope, and viruses
are even smaller than bacteria! Bacteria
live on your skin or in your nose or mouth
all the time and you never know it. Most
don’t ever bother you, but certain kinds
of bacteria can cause infections like
conjunctivitis.
Sometimes kids get ear infections when
they have conjunctivitis because the same
bacteria can cause both problems.
Viruses, like the kind that can give you
a cold, can cause conjunctivitis, too.
Conjunctivitis is easy to catch just through
touching. You can get conjunctivitis by
touching the hand of an infected friend
who has touched his or her eyes. If you
then touch your eyes, the infection can be
spread to you. Washing your hands often
with warm, soapy water is the best way to
avoid being infected with conjunctivitis.
Kids also get conjunctivitis because of
allergies or because they get something
irritating in their eyes, but these kinds of
conjunctivitis are not contagious.

Finally, your doctor may examine your
ears to see if you have an ear infection
caused by the same bacteria that can cause
conjunctivitis.
If you have conjunctivitis caused by
bacteria, the doctor will probably prescribe
antibiotic eye drops or ointment for you.
Babies are usually given the ointment
and kids and adults get the eye drops.
Your mom or dad can help you put the
medication in your eyes a couple of times
a day for about a week. It’s important
to use whatever the doctor prescribes
so the infection doesn’t come back.
Unfortunately, these drops won’t work if
a virus is causing your conjunctivitis. If
allergies are causing your itchy, red eyes,
the doctor may prescribe special eye drops

Frankie Edgar retained his UFC lightweight title with
a five round draw against Gray Maynard
By all rights, Frankie Edgar never should
have made it out of the first round of
his UFC 125 main event against Gray
Maynard. But after surviving multiple
knockdowns in the opening frame, the
UFC lightweight champion roared back to
retain his belt with a five round draw in an
exciting bout at the MGM Grand Garden
Arena that kicked off the 2011 fight year
in style.
Scores were 48-46 Maynard, 48-46 Edgar,
and 47-47. All three judges scored the first
round 10-8 in favor of Maynard.
“It felt like the first round didn’t happen,”
said Edgar, who made the second successful
defense of his title. “It was a close fight.”
“I kinda punched myself out in the first,”
said Maynard. “I thought I won (rounds)
1,3,5. It was a close one, but I thought I
won.”
The two took their time getting acclimated
to the bout in the opening minute,
but Maynard announced his arrival to

For Saturday night’s UFC 125 co-main
event, middleweight up and comer Brian
Stann asked for Chris Leben, a gutsy move
to say the least given the experience level
of “The Crippler”. But the US Marine
Corps veteran delivered when it counted,
as he scored a stirring first round TKO win
at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Leben vs. Stann
“I asked for Chris Leben because he is
the toughest guy on the UFC roster,” said
Stann. “That could have happened to either
one of us tonight; it just happened to be my
night.”
The standup attack of Stann was sharp
in the early stages of the opening round,
leading Leben to take matters inside. Stann
was able to turn the tables though, pushing
Leben to the fence before breaking loose.
Midway through the round a big right
hand from Stann dropped Leben, but “The
Crippler” was able to survive the ensuing
onslaught. Stann kept coming though,
dropping Leben a second time as they
stood against the fence. After Leben rose
again, a knee put the veteran down, and this
time Stann’s follow-up barrage brought in
referee Josh Rosenthal to halt the bout at
the 3:37 mark.
With the win, Stann improves to 10-3;
Leben falls to 21-7.
Vera vs. Silva

returned from a year long layoff with a
clear cut three round unanimous decision

Silva, who was sidelined since his January
2010 loss to Rashad Evans due to a back
injury.

flurries. Maynard calmly strode forward,
but his face was beginning to show the

to start round two, and Silva eagerly threw
back as the crowd erupted. After this brief
exchange, the two locked up against the
fence, with Silva following up with a
takedown. Silva fired away from the top
position, and he remained there for the
remainder of the frame, as he put another
round in the bank.
The two trade home run kicks to start round
three, but after another quick exchange,
Silva once again scored a takedown. Silva
remained in control from the back position,
but with only sporadic action, the fans were
calling for a standup from Mazzagatti. In
response, Silva opened up with punches
and a series of slaps, adding insult to injury
(Vera’s nose appeared to be broken) as
the seconds ticked away on Vera’s third
straight defeat.
With the win, Silva improves to 15-2; Vera
falls to 11-6.
Diaz vs. Kim
Korean welterweight Dong Hyun Kim
remained unbeaten, holding off a late
responded with a quick flurry that opened
a cut under Maynard’s left eye, and he
followed up with a thunderous slam the

knockout,” UFC Hall of Famer Randy

the mat, Edgar kept battling, locking in a
guillotine choke just before the bell.
Edgar went on the offensive with a
charge from Nate Diaz to win a close
and hard-fought three round unanimous
decision.
Scores were 29-28 across the board for
Kim, who improves to 14-0-1 with 1 NC;
Diaz falls to 13-6.
Diaz kicked off the bout with some crisp
standup, an attack nullified by a Kim
takedown. Kim fought well from the
top position, controlling position while
tossing in the occasional ground strike to
keep Diaz honest. Kim taunted Diaz while
taking short shots to the face, answering
with a huge strike of his own. Diaz stayed
busy from the bottom position, looking for
submissions. Kim’s pressure was relentless
though, and by staying busy, he kept
himself out of trouble. With less than 20
seconds left, Diaz got back to his feet in a
scramble, but wasn’t able to make a final
statement before the bell.
Again in the early stages of round two, Diaz’
standup game was working well, but he
wasn’t able to avoid Kim’s takedown. And
though Diaz was active from the bottom,
Kim was controlling the action from the
top with strikes and superior positioning.
With 1:40 left, Diaz kicked his way free,
only to end up on his back moments later.
Diaz did fight his way free with less than 30
seconds left, the impending bell stopping
any serious offensive retort.
Diaz looked to control the grappling
portion of the bout early in round three,
pinning Kim to the fence. The stronger
Korean fighter broke free fairly easy, and
the two locked up. Diaz scored with knee
to the head while Kim had his hand on the
canvas, drawing a warning from referee
Yves Lavigne and a break in the action.
After the action restarted, Kim pushed the

takedown and guillotine choke attempt to
begin the fourth round, and while Maynard
got up and escaped, the champion called on
his wrestling for another takedown seconds
later. After the two rose, Maynard - in the
fourth round for the first time in his career
– continued to chase Edgar, who made him
pay when he got too close as he continued
his stirring comeback.
With five minutes to go, each shot carried
the weight of the outcome on it, and each of
these gutsy lightweights had their moments
in the first half of the frame. In the second
half, Maynard looked for the takedown
but was turned back, and Maynard repaid
the favor to Edgar, leaving this bout to be
settled on the feet. With less than a minute
left, Edgar tagged Maynard, Maynard fired
back, and both were bloodied as they went
toe-to-toe till the final bell.
Edgar’s record now stands at 13-1-1;
Maynard remains unbeaten at 11-0-1 with
1 NC.

Lightweight contender Clay Guida got
the big name scalp he was looking for in
the main card opener, submitting former
PRIDE champion Takanori Gomi in the
second round.
After a lack of offensive action for the
first 90 seconds, Guida landed with a kick
to the head that got the crowd roaring. A
subsequent takedown attempt came up
short, but Gomi was apparently stunned
by the lightning fast attack. Flustered by
Guida’s head and foot movement, Gomi
was unable to find a home for his punches,
as he repeatedly came up short. And while
Gomi’s takedown defense was rock solid,
his offense was non-existent. With less
than a minute left, Guida broke through
with a takedown, but ran out of time before
he could press his advantage.
Guida stood closer to “The Fireball Kid”
in the early stages of round two, allowing
Gomi to get off a few strikes, but nothing
of any significance. Guida was in the
same boat, but gradually, his feints would
draw Gomi in and open him up for return
fire, and with 90 seconds left in the round
he got another takedown. Now in control
on the mat, Guida patiently worked his
ground game, locking in a guillotine
choke that produced a tap out at the 4:27
mark.
With the win, Guida improves to 28-8;
Gomi falls to 32-7 with 1 NC.

Will 2011 be brighter than 2010 in Bollywood?
Year 2010 is over. While we cherished a
few movies, we also bashed a few left,
right and centre. Now that it’s a thing of
the past, let us look forward to the future.
What can the audience expect from
Bollywood in 2011?
January would see the release of three
big films for sure. The first in line is
Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan starrer,
“No One Killed Jessica”, then there
is the Deol parivar’s, “Yamla Pagla
Deewana” and the very talented Mrs.
Aamir Khan aka Kiran Rao’s Dhobi
Ghat. The trailers of these films are
already on air and are creating quite a stir
already.
Another year draws to a close and every
year Bollywood keeps saying the same,
“hope at least next year brings us luck”.
But, like the White Wizard says to
Pippin, “It’s only a fools hope”.
Year 2010 was pitched to see some of
the biggest hits but alas! it just saw one
(Dabanng) or may be two (Golmaal 3).
So what are the ones that failed
miserably despite being promoted
extensively?
Veer- A Salman Khan-Anil Sharma
dud, Salman more than coped up for
the miserable story he has written with
Dabanng in the year’s second half.
Teen Patti- Despite containing two of

I’m afraid not. Tees Maar Khan leaves
the audience perplexed as to why on
earth did they ever buy a ticket to watch

We Are Family- The first of its kind
official remake of a Hollywood classic

though for their mistake, as the film
was coming from Farah Khan and of
course it had the Sheila ki Jawani factor
associated with it.
Why does this film fail to deliver? Let us see.
The Plot: Seriously speaking, there is
no plot. But, since I sustained the film
for a 130 minutes, I’ll reveal what was
not there, I mean what was there, Oh!
Whatever.
Akshay Kumar is born a conman,
literally, he is born a conman. Akshay’s
mother, played by the TV fame Apara
Mehta is into watching films about
dacoities and robbers while pregnant.
The yet to be born Tabrez Mirza Khan
learns the tricks the Abhimanyu way
and becomes the most renowned
conman, Tees Maar Khan.
Cut to the next scene, the police has

which has got Hrithik in it, Ranbir’s
Rockstar directed by Imtiaz Ali and

Well the first half of the year is sure to
see these releases, while the rest yet
unscheduled are some pretty heavy ones.

releasing during the months of November

remake is scheduled towards the end of

cinema has seen.
Anjaana Anjaani- Yet another film of
RK bit the dust at the B.O. Except for
the opening weekend, people remained
anjaana-anjaani from the theatres
screening the film.
Action Replayy- A partial lift from the
Hollywood comedy Back to the Future,
well the live action went missing
completely. Vipul Shah followed up last
year’s failure (London Dreams) with
another.
Guzaarish- When will Sanjay Leela
Bhansali stop painting a canvas and
start directing something for the
seized stolen antiques weighing 10,000
kilos from two joined twins, played by
Raghu Ram and Rajiv Laxman (MTv
Roadies fame). These antiques are to
be transported back to Delhi using a
special train that wouldn’t be stopped
anywhere unless it reaches the capital.
So, police fear that the twins would try
to claim the stolen treasure with the help
of the internationally renowned conman
Tees Maar Khan.
TMK is approached by the twins just
the way the police predict and he picks
up the job. In a bid to steal the treasure,
TMK plans to shoot a film in a village
called Dhuliya via which the train is
going to pass. For this purpose he ropes
in the super star Aatish Kapoor (played
by Akshaye Khanna) and the entire
village to be a part of his film.

of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai- Koochie
Koochie Hota Hai. Also, there is
Ranbir’s Barfee with Priyanka Chopra
and the Goaian beauty Ileana.
Come 2011, the audience are sure in for
a heavy dosage of Hindi Cinema.

You should be able to restore your
clothes to white (and not damage the
fibres of the fabric) by soaking them
them in lukewarm water and color safe

There is no guaranteed way to unshrink
a sweater, but I have a few ideas for you

1) Soak the sweater in hair conditioner
and water solution, and pull gently to
reshape, lay flat to dry.
2) Dissolve one ounce of borax in a
couple of tablespoons of hot water, add
the mixture to a gallon of warm water,
immerse the garment. Pull the sweater
gently into shape, and rinse in a gallon
of warm water to which you have added
2 tablespoons of vinegar.
3) Dissolve two cups of non-iodized salt
in enough hot water to cover the garment.

To remove the odor of gasoline from
clothing, place the clothing in a large
bucket of cold water. Add two cans of
coke to the water and a box of baking

clothes line to air dry. Finally, place the
dry garment into the washing machine
and launder as usual.
How To Remove Stickers and the
Adhesive
Some adhesives are easy to get off. Say
you need to get the label off that empty
pickle jar. Scrape through the label a
little and smear it with dish soap. Soak
in hot, soapy water. The paper comes off,
leaving just a little adhesive to scrape
off. Easy stuff. Price tags and stickers are
harder to remove. Citrus oil to the rescue!
It’s a powerful dissolver, or solvent if
you want to be scientific. Your store’s
cleaning aisle has citrus-based cleaners
as well as goo removers. Follow label
directions. Has the sun baked tape or a
sticker to the outside of your window?
Visit the hardware store. They’ll advise
you on the right kind of scraper.

Heart disease
Coronary heart disease is the biggest
killer in the world. But medical
advances mean that having heart
disease is no longer a death sentence
and there are lots of things that you can
do to reduce your risk.
Understanding heart disease
The signs and symptoms of coronary
heart disease, one of the most common
diseases to affect the heart.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one
of the commonest diseases to affect
the heart is. It’s usually caused by
atherosclerosis, a build up of fatty
materials within the walls of the arteries.
What is CHD?
In CHD, the arteries that supply the
heart with oxygen and nutrients become
narrowed by atherosclerosis restricting
the supply of blood and oxygen to the
heart, particularly during exertion when
there are more demands on the heart
muscle.
What are the symptoms of CHD?
The main symptom is angina, caused
by insufficient oxygen reaching the
heart muscle because of reduced blood
flow. Angina is a feeling of heaviness,
tightness or pain in the middle of your
chest that may extend to your arms,
neck, jaw, face, back or abdomen.
The following symptoms are by no
means always owing to CHD, and could
be harmless or caused by other medical
conditions. However, if you experience
any of them it’s a good idea to make an
appointment to see your doctor:
•Unusual breathlessness when doing
light activity or at rest, or breathlessness
that comes on suddenly.
•Palpitations - awareness of your heart
beat or a feeling of having a rapid and
unusually forceful heart beat, especially
if they last for several hours or recur
over several days and/or cause chest
pain, breathlessness or dizziness.
•Fainting - although not always a
serious symptom, fainting is due to
insufficient oxygen reaching the brain,

so you should report it to your doctor.
•Fluid retention or puffiness (the
medical term is oedema) is an abnormal
accumulation of fluid in the tissues of
the ankles, legs, lungs or abdomen,
for example. Although a mild degree
of ankle oedema may be quite normal
- for example, on a hot day - it can be
a sign that the heart isn’t pumping as
well as it should (this is known as heart
failure). Fluid retention in the lungs, or
pulmonary oedema, can cause intense
shortness of breath, and may be life-
threatening.
•Bluish-tinged fingernails or lips
(known medically as cyanosis) can be
the result of too little oxygen in the
blood.
•Fatigue is a common symptom of
heart disease, but has numerous causes,
including depression. It’s always worth
seeing your doctor if you feel unusually
tired, especially if this is combined with
symptoms that can’t be explained.
CHD: Causes and risk factors
The most common cause is
atherosclerosis, a build up of fatty
materials within the walls of the arteries
throughout the body, most importantly
in the arteries to the tissues of the heart
- the coronary arteries.
During this process, the inner lining
of the arteries becomes furred
with a thick, porridge-like sludge
(atheroma), consisting of fatty deposits
of cholesterol, cell waste and other
substances. These form raised patches
on the artery wall - known as ‘plaques’
- that narrow the arteries, reducing the
space through which blood can flow.
At the same time, the blood becomes
more prone to clotting. These growing
plaques may block the delivery of
nutrients to the artery walls, causing
the arteries throughout the circulation
to lose their elasticity. In turn, this can
lead to high blood pressure, which also
increases the risk of CHD.
A heart attack occurs when one of the
coronary arteries blocks completely.
This final step usually happens when
a plaque splits open for some reason,
causing a blood clot to form on its
surface that obstructs the flow of blood.
It’s not yet understood why plaques
split open, but inflammation seems to
play a part. When the supply of oxygen
and nutrients is completely blocked,
the heart muscle and tissue supplied
by that artery dies. Some people are
particularly predisposed towards
developing atherosclerosis, due to
inherited genetic factors. They may
have a family history of people dying at
a young age from CHD. An unhealthy
diet, lack of exercise, diabetes, high
blood pressure and smoking all increase
the risk.

Australian military rushes
supplies to flood zone

country’s worst flooding in decades are
being warned to stay out of the water, and
not just because of the risk of being swept
away: Debris, snakes and even crocodiles
could also pose a danger.
The Australian military on Monday raced
to bring food and supplies to the flood-hit
northern city of Rockhampton before it
is cut off by rising waters, as the disaster
claimed its third fatality.
Up to 200,000 people are estimated to
have been hit by the fast-flowing waters
that have inundated 22 rural towns in the
country’s northeast, across an area the size
of France and Germany.
The military was rushing food and medical
supplies to Rockhampton, population
75,000, on Monday as the coastal city
braced for floods which are expected to cut
off hundreds of more homes.
“Looks like Rockhampton’s in the middle
of an inland sea,” Queensland Premier
Anna Bligh said after flying over the
area. “The amount of water coming down
these river systems is nothing short of
astonishing.
“It is little wonder we’re seeing so much
heartbreak and so much tragedy in many of
our major towns and our smaller regional
centres.”
The airport to the regional hub was closed

A380 flights to Los Angeles by mid-January,
more than two months after an engine
blowout forced the carrier to temporarily
ground its superjumbo fleet.
A Qantas spokesman said Wednesday that
an exact date has not been set, but a schedule
prepared for planning purposes has the Los
Angeles flights resuming within weeks.
“We are hopeful of recommencing the Los
Angeles flight by January 17th , but have
not confirmed a date at this time,” the
spokesman said on condition of anonymity
in accordance with company procedure.

Police confirmed the third death since the
floods were declared a disaster, that of a
man who drowned after his vehicle was
swept into a flooded river.
His death follows that of a man who died
after abandoning his boat as it took on
water last Saturday and that of a woman
who drowned as she was swept away by
surging waters that swamped her car.
Ten people have now died in flood-related
accidents since November 30 -- including
three whose vehicles were swept away,
two people who attempted to swim in fast-
flowing waters, a man who was knocked
off a footbridge and a girl who drowned
while trying to walk across a river.
Queensland state assistant police
commissioner Alistair Dawson has warned
the emergency could drag on for a month,
saying that, while parts of the state were
in recovery mode, others were bracing for
the worst.
Qantas grounded all six of its A380s for 19
days after a Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine
disintegrated shortly after a flight took off
from Singapore on Nov. 4, and other airlines
that use that type of engine also suspended
some services while checks were carried out.
Preliminary reports said an oil leak caused a
fire in the giant high-tech engine.
In November, Qantas Airways resumed
A380 flights on the other route that it uses
the superjumbo, from Australia to London
via Singapore. But CEO Alan Joyce said
the Australia-U.S. flights would remain
suspended while more tests were carried out.
Employers ‘will lose out’
under visa review
An Alice Springs migration agent says
the Federal Government is making it
harder for Northern Territory employers
to bring in skilled workers from overseas.
Anke Nagel says the Immigration
Department has been reviewing all the
employer-sponsored visas from January
1 with the intention of implementing
changes from July 1.
Ms Nagel says the review is not designed
to improve opportunities for people
wanting to live and work in Australia.
“They are not making it easier for
migrants whether they are employer-
sponsored or not,” she said.
“The changes that are occurring are
not there to facilitate migrants to come
to Australia. It’s making it harder. It’s
ensuring that really only the most skilled
and most determined people are going to
come.”

Planes heavier on takeoff
The direct flights from Australia’s two
largest cities of Sydney and Melbourne to
Los Angeles are among the longest non-
stop commercial flights in the world, and
the A380s must carry more fuel than on
other flights to make them.
That means the planes are heavier when
they take off, and need more thrust from
the A380’s four engines. Qantas says it will
not fly the Australia-U.S. routes until it is
satisfied the extra thrust does not put unsafe
stresses on the engines.

regulator increased the number of flights
that can be made by a Trent 900 engine
before it must be inspected for signs of the
type of problem that occurred on the Qantas
plane.
Qantas has launched legal action in
Australia to sue Rolls-Royce over losses
from the incident.

With cold weather expected to hit Metro
Vancouver this week, Surrey RCMP are
again advising the public to remain diligent
when it comes to protecting themselves
against auto theft.
Every winter, the Surrey RCMP see a sharp
increase in the number of ‘vehicle theft
with keys’ reports when cold temperatures
hit and people begin to leave their vehicles
warming up unattended. Statistics show
that the number of cars stolen with keys
left in the ignition can sometimes increase
by 150% during the winter months.
“This is a trend we see every winter,” says
Cpl. Mike Spencer, Surrey RCMP Auto
Crime Team.
The dangers of debit card
“Certain car thieves will actually target
those who warm up their car and leave it
unattended,” says Cpl. Spencer. “It is also
very common to see with every theft of
this nature that the victim will indicate
that he/she ‘had just run inside to grab
something’, only to come back out and
see their car driving away.”

opportunity. If you choose to leave your
vehicle running and unattended you may
be a victim.

Hundreds take the plunge in White Rock
White Rock beach was crowded with
thousands of people Jan.1, as the annual
tradition of starting the new year with a dip
in the ocean marked its 41st year.
Mayor Catherine Ferguson led the
countdown for the noon Polar Bear Swim,
prompting around 500 people to take the icy
plunge.
Organizer Don Miller said the beautiful
weather was likely a factor in the large
number of participants (the event averages
300 to more than 500 people) some of
whom dressed for occasion.
“We had a number of people in costumes.
Two of them were really made up with
all kinds of makeup and other things. It’s
always nice to have people like that around.”
The tradition – hosted each year by Peace
Arch Monarch Lions – also draws those
who prefer to stay onshore.
“We had at least 2,500 spectators down
there – they were solid from the pier, to the
rock, and beyond,” Miller said.
Donations were collected for St. John
Ambulance and Semiahmoo Peninsula
Marine Group – both of which were onsite
– and certificates were given to those who
braved the water.
“We thank everyone who turned out and
hopefully see them again next year,” Miller
said.

Between 2008 and 2009, there was a 36

Consumers Association of Canada says
most of us are well aware of the risks of
credit card fraud, but few of us realize
how much more of a hassle debit card
fraud can actually be.
The National Post reports banks won’t
give you back the cash until they’re
satisfied you weren’t involved and it
can take weeks to get a new card.
Man charged for selling fake
Olympics tickets
Accused collected $60,000 for tickets
he never delivered
A Canada-wide warrant has been issued
for a man accused of selling tickets for the
2010 Olympics but never delivering them to
almost 30 buyers. Thirty-one-year-old Sean
McConnell Stuart of West Vancouver faces
a number of charges.
Police claim Stuart offered tickets for sale
online for the opening ceremony and the
men’s gold medal hockey game. They say
Stuart collected a 50 per cent down payment
from most of his victims and promised to
deliver the tickets when he got them from
VANOC.
But police say he never came through, and
VANOC says he never had an account with
the organization. He’s accused of collecting
$60,000 from victims all over Canada, the
US and as far away as Croatia.

New homeowner benefit takes

effect
Directed to those who live up north and in
rural parts of BC
Homeowners in northern and rural parts of
BC now have a new tax benefit. Finance
Minister Colin Hansen says it will especially
help seniors.
“With this new benefit, seniors could be
receiving benefit of up to $1045 in reduction
to their property taxes,” explains Hansen.
The homeowner grant is funded through
carbon tax revenue, part of making the
controversial tax revenue neutral.

B.C. residents are being urged to
double-check any clover sprouts they
may have in the fridge.
Sprouters Northwest of Kent, Wash.,
has voluntarily recalled various sizes
of its clover sprouts and clover sprout
varieties with a “best by” date of Jan.16

The sprouts may be contaminated with
Salmonellosis, a common infection that
can cause diarrhea, fever and vomiting.
U.S. health officials say the sprouts
were sold in B.C. and several American
