1. [4 𝑀𝑀] A digital voltmeter has a read –out range from 0 to 99999 counts. Determine the
resolution of the instrument in volt when the full-scale reading is 99.999 V.
2. [6 𝑀𝑀] An instrument is calibrated in an environment using the same input values X, at two
different temperatures. The output readings Y and the corresponding input values are
recorded in the table below. Extract all possible static-characteristics of this instrument.
3. [6 𝑀𝑀] If the density of a substance is calculated from measurements of its Mass Width,
Length ang Hight where the respective errors are ±3% in mass measurement and ±2% in
length measurement, calculate the total possible error and the likely maximum error in the
density value.
4. [4 𝑀𝑀] In a thermocouple used in a standard two-junction thermocouple configuration with
0𝐶𝐶 𝑜𝑜 reference temperature, determine the voltage that would result for an output
temperature of 300𝐶𝐶 𝑜𝑜 . The thermocouple material is copper with constantans 𝛼𝛼 =
30 µ𝑉𝑉/𝐶𝐶 𝑜𝑜 and 𝛾𝛾 = 0.1 µ𝑉𝑉/𝐶𝐶 𝑜𝑜 2 .
5. [5 𝑀𝑀] It is required to obtain a meter standard from a calibrated line standard using a
composite line standard. The actual length of the calibrated line standard is 1000.010 mm.
The composite line standard comprises a length bar having a basic length of 950 mm and
two end blocks, (a + b) and (c + d), each having a basic length of 50 mm. Each end block
contains an engraved line at the center.
Four different measurements were obtained when comparisons were made between the
calibrated line standard and the composite bar using all combinations of end blocks:
Lbc =
1000.0035 =
mm Lbd 1000.003mm =
Lac 1000.003mm Lad 1000.0025 mm
Block (a + b) was found to be 0.002 mm less than block (c + d) when two end blocks were
compared with each other. Determine the actual length of the meter bar when the block
(a+b) is used.
