LPG VS ELECTRICITY FOR COOKING

LPG is a mixture of 40% propane and 60% butane which gives specific energy content of 46.1
Megajoules/kg. Each LPG cylinder in Nepal should have 14.2 kg of gas.
1 kg of LPG= 46.1 MJ

LPG stove has high efficiency compared to other fuel stoves. Its energy conversion efficiency is
typically 55-60%. It means out of 100 MJ energy content in LPG only 55-60 MJ gets converted to
heat.
1 kg of LPG @ 55% efficiency= 24.355 MJ
1 cylinder= 14.2 kg of LPG= 14.2*24.355= 360 MJ

Joules is a derived unit of energy in the International System of Units.

1 Joules= The work required to produce one watt of power for one second = 1 Ws

1 MJ = 1000000 Ws
= 1000 kWs
=1000/3600 kWh (converting second to hour)
= 0.277 kWh

360 MJ = 0.277*360= 100 kWh = 100 units

Induction Stove has typical efficiency of 84% (U.S. Department of Energy)

To get 360 MJ equivalent energy, electricity required
= 100/0.84= 119 kWh= 119 units

NEA electricity charges comes in two form, service charge and energy charge. Average energy charge
excluding service charge is Rs 13/unit.

For energy equivalent to energy from 1 cylinder of LPG gas.

Cost of Electricity= NRs 1547 (excluding service charge)

Cos of LPG = Rs 1375
