Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio ranked 17th in American business magazine Fast Company’s ‘50 Most Innovative Companies list’ 2018.

1. Sustainable Sourcing: Jio is not hiding its dirt under someone else’s carpet. Jio has laid 3 lac route km of optic fibre
network across India. Optical fibre envelope made with fibers recycled from PET bottles.

2. Low Carbon Intensity per TB: In FY 2017-18, the Jio business consumed direct energy accounting to 1.86 million Giga
Joule (GJ) and indirect energy of 4.05 million GJ. The Jio business has put highly efficient systems in place to ensure low
carbon intensity per TB of data usage compared to other service providers.

3. Paperless Digital Verification: Jio collaborated with Government of India and was the first telecom operator to utilise
the E-KYC concept, this became a revolution in telecom sector as on-boarding process of a customer got smooth and
easy. Due to this technological advantage we were able to connect with a huge set of customers in a quick time.

4. Hotspots for Effective Cooling System (HVAC) : It was observed that HVAC were resulting in high PUE in server rooms
coupled with increased number of high temperature alarms, Precision Air Conditioning (PAC) failures affecting network
availability. The outcomes of this taken action are –
 Reduction in HVAC energy consumption resulted in carbon emission reduction along with significant monetary
benefit
 Number of alarms for Electronic card failures due to high temperature are reduced to zero thereby improving
reliability

5. Mobile Dispensing Unit (MDU): Jio sites across India used to face issues like diesel pilferage, diesel spillage and
uncontrolled diesel filling activities through vendors. This was resulting in uncontrolled consumption/ usage of valuable
energy resource. Thus, they installed Mobile Dispensing Units (MDU) catering to diesel filling requirements which
included 4 lakh towers spread across the country. This automation process comes with salient features such as real time
monitoring through GPS, analysis and report of daily filling of diesel. Resultantly, soil contamination and diesel spillage
were reduced.

6. Green 4G Towers (Ground Based Mast)

 Reliance Jio has installed over 90,000 eco-friendly 4G towers which occupy 5 times less space as compared to
conventional towers. Also, as per the study conducted by IITB, the electromagnetic field (EMF) emitted by these
towers is within the limit set of Department of Telecommunication (DoT) and International Standards (check limit
data). They only have 1 spectral radiation per tower.
 Don’t require air conditioning due to an in-house design. Thus, it results in huge savings on account of power
consumption. Towers are designed to typically consume just 600-700W of power.
 Antennaes for these towers are far away from the ground considering the proposed height of 25 meters and surface
reflections are minimal.
 Usage of effective battery backup and electricity thereby eliminating the need of permanent diesel generators
resulting in zero diesel consumption and emission. It is, therefore, a truly green solution.

7. Promotion of Local Suppliers: Distribution of SIM cards and 4G handsets via local suppliers and already established
Reliance Digital stores to optimize logistics cost and delivery time. This is how they acquired over 108 million customers
in the first 170 days of its launch, with its quick Reliance Jio has become the fastest adopted technology in the human
history.

8. Digital Value Chain: Made data the new oil. Jio has vitally contributed to Digital India. This has revolutionized paperless
documentation and electronic channels catering all the necessities like payments, entertainment, etc.

Jio continues to innovate across the digital value chain through process innovations and optimisation, technol ogy platforms and
stack applications, big data analytics and other key network infrastructure components as well as in customer service areas. Jio
has so far filed 68 patents of which 11 have been already granted in various jurisdictions. Jio continues to invest in integration
and innovation across the digital value chain.
