FR ARRIE VAN DER HULST MEMORIAL CUP 2017

It was on 16th October 2017, Monday in the afternoon that Fr. Arrie Van der Hulst Memorial cup
2017 was officially declared open by Rev. Fr. Richard Magararu, SMM, Philippines Delegation
Superior at 121-9th Street New Manila 1112 Quezon City.
Plato in his ethics stated that, those who are capable and have embraced good life can save as
models to others. Fr. Arrie is one of those whose life inspires the delegation and the congregation
at large, that is why this year’s sports feast is named after him. The delegation is thanking the
Lord Almighty for the gift of Fr Hulst in the delegation. Moreover, this is time for community
bonding and as the church, congregation and the delegation needs health ministers for the
mission. Sports activities saves also as the opportunity for the members to build on their physical
bodies.
As peoples always say, “the fear of the Lord is the begging of wisdom”. Therefore, the
programme started with an opening prayer which was dramatized by the Novices. This was
followed by the Philippine National Anthem. By the power invested in him, Rev Fr Richard
Magararu, SMM, Philippine Delegation Superior gave the opening remarks and officially
declared Fr Hulst Memorial Cup opened.
Putting in mind that in every game, for it to be called a competition, at least more than one
person or teams are to be present and participate. Fr Rene Bustillo, SMM who is the Postulant
Director presented the teams involved. These are; Blue Warriors (Scholasticate), Yellow Stars
(Postulancy and Novitiate), Green Peas (Collegians) and Red Hut (Makati Community).
When our Lord Jesus was born, the three wise men from the east followed the star which was
lightening their way to find him. Knowing that though we are religious men who are human
beings and all human beings have emotions. As such, it was of great importance to be reminded
of this as we were about to venture in sports which is an emotional activity but this reality does
not take away our brotherhood. Therefore, the presentation of teams was followed by the lighting
of the torch and the Oath of Sportsmanship.
After taking an Oath of sportsmanship, the game started. Others may not imagine what kind of
sports can be played by the religious men. This year’s sports fest comprises of; volleyball,
basketball and parlour games. The first game to be played was between Blue Warriors against
Yellow Stars whereby the Blue Warriors emerged as winners of this game. Up next was the
parlour game, the Green Peas took the day. Volleyball was back on the coat, this time it was Red
Hut up against Yellow Stars. Only one set was played because of time constraints. The Yellow
Stars won the game.
The day ended with a simple meal shared by everyone which was provided by the Red Hut
Team. Watch out for the next games which are scheduled 23 October 2017, Monday.
