Dear Participants,

We are very pleased to welcome you to the

54th Markneukirchen International Instrumental


Competition 2019
with the categories violoncello and guitar. It is the 54th time already that Markneukirchen has invited young
artists from all over the world. 169 applications from 36 countries were received. We have accepted all of the
48 applications in the category guitar and 71 candidates in the category violoncello after having done a pre-
selection by the jurors Prof. Maximilian Hornung, Prof. Reinhard Latzko and Ms. Quirine Viersen.
With this paper we would like to give you some information on the competition and important dates.

Order of the competition


The drawing of the order of the competition takes place on Thursday, May 9th 2019, 7 p.m. in the Foyer of
the Music Hall Markneukirchen. There we are going to draw a lot to determine a letter which is valid for
both categories. The participant, who is first in the participant register under the drawn letter starts first in
each category. The order of the performances according to the participant register will last throughout the
competition until the final and will not be changed. After the drawing of the order of the competition a
schedule with the times of performances of the first round will be posted in the Music Hall Markneukirchen,
in the “Villa Merz”, Markneukirchen, in the Music School as well as in the Town Hall and published on the
website of the competition.

category guitar: Friday, 10th May 2019 at 9.00 a.m. in the “Villa Merz”, Adorfer Str. 38 in Markneukirchen
category violoncello: Friday, 10th May 2019 at 9.00 a.m. in the Music Hall in Markneukirchen

Competition schedule
Please be at the place of competition 30 minutes before your performance and contact the jury secretary
upon your arrival. There, you will also have the chance for rehearsal.
After all participants of one round have been evaluated, the jury will deliberate. After the jury’s deliberation
the participants will get informed which candidates proceed to the next round. This information will be given
in the place of competition. After this announcement all eliminated candidates have the chance to get advice
about their performances by the chairman of the jury and the judges.
At the end of the announcement the times of performances for the next round will be shown on lists in the
place of competition and on the website of the competition. Please speak to your accompanist immediately
after the end of a round for organizing new times for rehearsals.

Rehearsals
All participants can use rooms in the Music School (Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Str. 13) for rehearsals with their
accompanist. Please arrange times for rehearsals directly with your official pianist. All participants with an
own private pianist shall arrange times for rehearsals with the information office in the town hall. One
rehearsal room in the Music School will also be available for the guitar participants; please contact the
information office in the town hall for rehearsal times.
On Thursday, 9th May 2019 rehearsals in the places of competition will take place. The according times will
have been determined in advance and will be given to each participant upon its registration in the
town hall. The first rehearsals with accompanist in the category violoncello will be on Friday, 10th May 2019.
The times for these rehearsals will be arranged between a member of staff of the competition and the
participants at the end of the festive opening with the drawing of the order in the Music Hall in
Markneukirchen on the evening of the 9th May 2019.
