PRE-READING

1. What do you think is the best stage (childhood, adolescence, or adulthood) of the human being?
Justify your answer.

the best stage of our lives is when we are children because it is when we enjoy things without
worries, we have minimal problems with an easy solution because mom and dad are always
there defending us, we are only thinking of playing and having fun with other children or
creating imaginary friends and We never stop dreaming thinking that the unreal exists as
mermaids, elves and dragons. This stage is the perfection of life and the shortest.

2. When you were little did you want to become an adult? What were your reasons?

When I was a child, I wanted to be an adult to study and work so that I could have a lot of
money and buy all the toys in the world.

3. When you were a child, what was the activity you enjoyed the most? Why?

What I enjoyed the most was singing and dancing the children's rounds believing myself an
artist.

6. In the first page who is telling the story. Add sentences from the chapter to support your answer.
The story on the first page is told by the pilot, because he is the one who begins to talk about how they
met and because they are related, since the two were the only dreamers and capable of understanding
the world in the same way.

-So, then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown a
little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful
to me.

-In the course of this life I have had a great many encounters with a great many
people who have been concerned with matters of consequence. I have lived a great
deal among grown−ups. I have seen them intimately, close at hand. And that
hasn't much improved my opinion of them.

7. Why did the narrator refuse to his prominent career of a painter?

He dreamed of being a painter, and one day he decided to draw a boa that an elephant had swallowed,
he showed it to the adults and they saw that it was a hat, so they advised him to find another career
because painting was not his fort, abandoning his dreams and becoming a pilot.

8. Why is difficult for grown-ups to understand what children say?

Because adults always need explanations, they can never understand on their own and they lack
imagination, unlike a child.

POST-READING

9. What was the most interesting part of the first chapter? Why?

The most interesting thing was when the pilot spoke about the drawing he did as a child and the lack of
imagination of the adult, not realizing the boa that the elephant swallowed and not being able to see
that behind that image there was not only a simple hat .
