Summative Problem Set 3

General instructions: Read and solve the problems carefully and completely. Box your
final answers according to what is asked in each problem. For problems requiring
expressions, simplify your answers. For numerical values, express your answers up to
three significant digits. The maximum score is 30/30.

1. Flux-it. Three charges, 𝑞1 = +5.00 nC, 𝑞2 = −1.00 nC,

and 𝑞3 = −6.00 nC are enclosed in different Gaussian
surfaces as shown. What is the net electric flux through
surface 𝑆5 ? What will be the net electric flux when the
area of 𝑆5 is doubled? Why?

2. D.C. Siete. Shown in the figure is a D.C. circuit. A

current of 4.00 A passes through the 6.00 − Ω resistor.
What is the emf in this circuit?

3. Through the wire. A long, straight

current-carrying wire is placed in a region
with a uniform electric field of magnitude
50.0 N/C directed as shown. An electron
(𝑒 = 1.61 × 10−19 C) is fired parallel to this
wire with velocity 4 × 106 m/s in the same
direction as the current, 3 × 10−2 m from
the wire. What must be the current 𝐼 such
that the electron remains undeflected, or
remains moving parallel to the wire?

4. Heart reactance only. Consider the phasor diagram for an

RLC series circuit in the figure, with the current phasor
parallel to the phasor of the 4 − V component. If the current
across the circuit is 2.00 A, what is the inductive and
capacitive reactance?
5. Thetas of Mary Grace. Unpolarized light with intensity 𝐼0 enters a stack of three
polarizers with angles 00 , 300 , and 𝜃 from the vertical, in this order. The resulting
polarized light has intensity 0.1𝐼0 . What is the angle 𝜃?

6. Interference. Two light sources 𝐴 & 𝐵 can be adjusted to emit monochromatic light
from the visible spectrum. The two sources are coherent, are 2.04 𝜇m apart, and in
line with an observer such that one source is always 2.04 𝜇m farther from the
observer than the other. From the visible spectrum (350 − 780 nm), at what
wavelengths will the observer see the brightest light? How about the dimmest light?
Give two each.
