Outline
• Introduction
• About Hard Disk Drives
• About Solid State Drives
• Differences between SSD and HDD
Introduction
• Capacity of Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) has
increased 40% annuallybut the performance
has increased 2% annually.
• Solid State Drives (SSDs)offer exceptionally
high performance but have much less capacity
per drive and relatively expensive.
• Must quantify the performance, capacity, and
cost value of SSDs vs. HDDs for different
applications.
About Hard Disks

• A basic nonvolatile storage on a

computer.
• Essentially metalplatters with a magnetic
coating.
• Electromechanical
• A magnetic disk that spins and a moving
read/write head.
• Hard disk drives must initiate these
movements before they can save
information or read files.
About Solid State Drives
• Does much the same job functionallyas an HDD
• Data is stored on interconnected flash memory
chips
• Can either be permanently installed on the
system's motherboard
• Differ from the ones in perndrives– faster and
more reliable than the flash memory inpendrives.
• More expensive thanpendriveswith the same
capacity.
Burn the money?
OR
Be like this?
Which one is more cost saving?
HDD is more cost saving

HDD SSD

$ 0.08 / GB $ 0.60 / GB
Need tonnes of storage
If you have 100 TB
you can save87%!!
!

HDD SSD

$ 80,000 $ 600,000
Capacity
HDD has higher capacity
you can have88% higher capacity!!!

HDD SSD

1 TB = $ 80 250 GB = $ 150
12.5 GB/$ 1.5 GB/$
Cost and capacity win
Will performance be affected?
SSD has better performance

HDD SSD

Conclusion

• HDDs win on price, capacity, andavailability

• SSDs work best if speed are important factors
Recommendations

• HDD with regular defragmentation
