The roof for all buildings (residential and non-

residential) shall not have a thermal transmittance
(U-value) greater than–

a) 0.4 W/m²K for Light (under 50kg/m²) weight roof;

b) 0.6 W/m²K for Heavy (above 50kg/m² weight roof,

Unless provided with other shading or cooling means.

1.3 Spanning Ability
1.4 Durability
1.5 Aesthetic
1.6 Thermal (U-value)

86
1.3 Spanning Ability

 Purlin Spacing

Considerations:
a) Roof Profile – Deeper profile, span further
b) Thickness – Thicker material, span further
c) Steel Grade – Higher tensile strength, span
further

87
Ability to Span

Purlin Spacing 6m c/c

SANKO S-60 IN NATURAL CURVE
1.4 Durability
 High corrosive industry
 Aggressive or corrosive environment
• Coastal area
• Building sited close to factories with corrosive emission

Considerations:
a) Metallic coating mass (eg AZ 150, AZ 200, Z 275)
b) Base metal thickness, thicker more durable but 1.0mm
c) Paint system and good corrosion inhibitive primer

NB*: PVDF paint is not meant for corrosive or aggressive

environment

92
1.5 Aesthetic
 Signature roof
Cladding as façade
Interplay of colours

Considerations:
a) Type of paint, colour fading
b) Roof or cladding profile
c) Detailings

93
1.6 Thermal Value

 U-Value

Considerations:
a) Roof built-up
 Sufficient thickness of mineral wool, air gap
with aluminium foil

94

1.8 Budget
Considerations:
a) Choice of material
b) Material thickness
c) Choice of Profile
d) Choice of Roof System (Concealed fix & Screw fix)
e) Allowance for end lapping

Advise:
If cannot meet budget, value engineer or re-
examine performance criteria.

99
1.9 Other Compliances
 Statutory compliances:
 UBBL
 MS 1525 (U-Value)
 MS 2095 (Aluminum foil insulation)
 CIDB Malaysia
 Bomba (Class ‘O’)
 Department of Civil Aviation (non-reflective roof)
 Other compliances like FM Approvals, air-tight
building

100
Incompatible or Weak
Specifications

101
Proper roof system alone is
insufficient to ensure that
performance will meet overall
expectation.

102
Common incompatible / weak specification
1) Specify G.I. Flashing
Galvanized
Flashing

Incompatibility of material

103
Paint peel off
from G.I flashing

104
Flashing same as Roof material

105
2) Specify thickness by gauge number

Galvanized
Flashing

106
Common Gauge number
• Gauge 28 = 0.40mm ? 0.38mm ?
• Gauge 26 = 0.48mm ? 0.45mm?

• Hence, it is strongly advisable to avoid using

gauge number to avoid ambiguity.

107
Typical material thickness
Market typical/Common thk
AZ150 (Al/Zn Z18
alloy) (galvanised)
a) 0.35mm BST 0.40mm TCT 0.38mm TCT
b) 0.42mm BST 0.47mm TCT 0.45mm TCT
c) 0.48mm BST 0.53mm TCT 0.51mm TCT
d) 0.60mm BST 0.65mm TCT 0.63mm TCT

108
3) Specify G.I gutter for aggressive
environment without stating metallic
coating mass.
• Solution = Use Zincalume or Stainless Steel
• Specify metallic coating mass, AZ150
• Specify Grade 304 or 316 for stainless steel
• Specify thickness, 0.80mm BST or 1.2mm BST
• Specify fixing method, welded joint ( thk
>1.2mm, silicon stitch joint )
• NB: Avoid very wide gutter to avoid water
ponding.
109
4) Specify soldered joint for gutter or
welded joint for thickness less than 1.20mm

• Nowadays, no more soldering (joined by

screw and silicon)

• Welding on metal less than 1.20mm is

not recommended, can burn through

110
5) Specify chicken wire mesh for
aggressive environment

(Source: Home Depot & EdgeSafe)

111
6) Specify copper lightning arrestor

Corrosion due to incompatibility of material

112
Aluminium lightning arrestor:
- Compatible material hence no corrosion.

113
7) Did not specify type of fastener

Fastener
deteriorates
much faster
than metal
roof

114
ACCESSORIES – Fasteners
AS3566 Class 3 FASTENERS

115
7) Specify Stainless Steel fasteners

(Source: BlueScope)

116
Incompatible fasteners

Stainless steel screws corroding G.I/Zincalume gutter.
