FABI Assignment

Introduction

In course 743, the semester project asked students to join as a group to construct a

semester long case study assessment of a student in one of our classes, or a hypothetical

student. My group chose to focus on a student in my partner’s elementary classroom.

This created the challenge throughout the semester because a large majority of the work

was put on his teacher to do the constant assess of the student since us other group

members could not go to her class and observe the student. Each week, we were asked to

continue to build on the information that his teacher observed that week.

Purpose

I see this semester long assignment to have two purposes. The first purpose was to

learn the act of co-teaching and working with other teachers in constant observations and

assessments. It was a challenge since all four of us were in different cities, but we did

work together each week to lead to our final product, which we were all very proud of

when it was submitted. The second purpose that this assignment had was teaching the

correct way to have functional behavioral assessment and how to create positive behavior

support in the classroom. Understanding with this student the impact that he had on his

classroom was a great way to understand what this course was teaching us.

Revisions

On this assignment, my group received a 100/100 in the grade book. There were a

number of revisions done by Professor Common once we turned it in, as well as he left

one feedback comment on the checklist that I revised. Other than that, having four eyes

on this assignment allowed us to be very proud of the work we turned in so the revisions

were very limited.

What was learned

This assignment taught me the impact a group setting can bring to assessing a

child’s learning experience. Having three other members working on this really allowed

for brainstorming and seeing their strategies. When co-teaching, there has to be a lot of

trust in each other and that trust really came out in this assignment since one group

member had to do all the in class work.

This class and assignment also expressed the impact of behavioral assessments

can have not only on the specific student but the entire classroom as a whole. One

student’s behavior can shift a classroom quick, so preventing behavioral outbursts as

much as possible and having a plan in order when it happens can be a game changer. The

assessment aspect of it is a great way to create plans for when there are behavioral issues.
