Hiring and Firing

You have been late 45 times this year. I’m sorry but you’re fired! – To fire someone is to terminate
someone’s employment due to their bad behaviour.

Due to the recession, we will have to lay off 100 workers? – To lay off means to terminate
employment due to the economy or an economic problem in the company. You can also use make
redundant.

I received a redundancy payment last week but I’m still not happy about losing my job! – A
redundancy payment is the money an employer gives to someone who is made redundant.

Due to my ill health, I’m sorry to announce that I will be resigning at the end of the month – To resign
is to voluntarily terminate your employment. It is similar to retire but retirement is normally when
you have reached an age at which you are too old to work in the company.

I have found a better job with a better salary so I gave notice to my employer yesterday – To give
notice means that you have informed your employer that you are leaving your job.

Tricky meeting verbs

Draw up – to prepare something official (normally written – I have drawn up a contract for the new
intern. She can sign it tomorrow.

Call off – to cancel an event that was planned – We will have to call off the company picnic as it is
raining.

Bring forward – To move the date or time of an event closer to the present – John has asked us to
bring forward the staff meeting to 4pm as he has a train to catch.

Wind up – To bring an event to an end – We need to wind up the meeting now as the room is only
reserved until 2pm. (wind is pronounced like kind in this case)
