Design of Steel Structures CE 51024
Assignment ( 8.3.2019)

1.Determine a member to carrya factored maximum tension load of 100kips.Assume that the
member is a wideflange connected thriough the flanges using 3/4 in diameter bolts in two rows
of four each as shown in the figure below. The center to center distance of the bolts in the
direction of loading is 4 in. The edge distances are 1.5 in and 2.0 in as shown in the figure
below. Steel material is A572 Grade 50.

¾ in dia

2.Determine the design strength of the tension member and connection system shown
below.Check also the size of the fillet weld(SMAW). The tension member is a 4in × 3/8 in thick
rectangular bar. It is welded to a ½ in thick gusset plate using E70XX electrode. Consider the
yielding and fracture of the tension member.(Take U=0.75)
3.Design the column shown in figure assuming the column is laterally braced about the Y-Y
axis and torsionally braced at the midpoint.Use LRFD. Fy=50ksi

4. Select the lightest W12 for the following conditions: Fy= 50ksi, P (dead load) = 250k, P (live
load) = 400K, KxLx=26 ft and KyLy=13ft
(a) By trial and error procedure (b) using LRFD tables
