Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs indicates that we all have 5 levels of need that must be
met:  Physiological, Safety, Love / Belonging, Esteem and Self-Actualization.  In your
professional opinion:

1. How important it is for students to have their basic needs met in order to be
successful in School?  Why do you think so?

Any student to be successful in life or in school they need to have their basic needs
met. Because without having their basic needs they will not be able to concentrate
and focus in class. Because all of the other factors can counteract their learning in
class such as being hungry or having cold because their jackets is too thin. In order
to have a coherent student their basic needs have to be met.

2. Which needs are most important to have satisfied so students can thrive in school?
Why?

Mrs. Cervantes mentioned how this question is a tough one. Because you really do
not know from where to grasp because you always want your students to thrive in
school. She mentions how there is students that come to school with a trauma
where they do not feel safe at home and having to establish a safe environment in
school.
Thinking about our school we also provide our student with free breakfast and
lunch so that the hunger is met.

This also creates a building of a relationship and connection to the student where they
feel a sense of belonging, care, and love. She does not know which one is more important,
but it is all a sense of creating a good rapport and safety with the student.

3. Who is responsible for ensuring that students have their needs met?  Why do you
think so?
She believes it is a partnership the home and school. But as personnel there are
some factors that they do not have any control over. But like she mentioned
before the school provides lunches for free because sometimes there are parents
that are in a situation that they cannot get out of. We can reach out to the parents

and supply items and work together so that they student’s needs are met.

4.What is one thing a teacher might do for a student who has physiological or safety
needs?  Why would this be useful?
By providing Resources such as clothing for the students. Just finding out what is
lacking and providing education and might make them aware of the path for the
students’ family.
4. Ensuring Safety needs are met and making sure students are ready to learn involves
classroom management. What are three things you do to manage your classroom?
Routines and Procedures is so important but once you establish your classroom
management it is important to get to know your students on a personal level. You
want to know their likes, dislikes, hobbies, favorite colors, and
Being in contact and not just to provide bad behaviors calls, also inform the
parents when the student is doing good, or the student started doing something
out of their routine. Maybe something is going on and the parent needs to be
aware of.
5. How do you decide what rules and routines to employ?
Depends on age level because Mrs. Cervantes mentions she has taught upper levels
and the rules and procedure are so different from when she was teaching
kindergarten.
Our administration has provided us with set school rules, and we follow them
daily.
But in the classroom, we also can create unspoken rules where they are exclusive
to your classroom procedures and expectations. What is right and wrong and
establish boundaries. Working as a group one body and also include the school
rules.
6. Do these fit for students who have a Behavior Intervention Plan? How do you assess
progress? What do you do for students from a different culture?

For students with behavior plan you still want to apply the regular routines but
with modifications. Making the student aware that there are rules in class and
maybe you will have to repeat, model, reinforce until they mastered their
behavioral plan.
Keeping records of positive and negative behavioral and patterns. Plus, keeping
an eye on their goals and looking how can I better fit the big cohesive plan.
Students from a different culture I have not have experience but I believe talking
to the parent’s so you do not overstep boundaries knowing about their cultures
and traditions. Becoming aware and knowledgeable to meet the needs of the
students.
7. How do you organize your classroom / educational environment to support
classroom management?
From the start of the year it is important to establish your procedures. From
where the students are going to leave their backpacks, work, folders, in a set spot.

So, you never want to confuse students. Students need to be organized and clean
desk area at all times.
If you overload your walls with posters and information you can overstimulate
your students. I think it is important to keep your walls at an essential
information and posters at a minimum.

9.With classroom management in mind, what advice would you give me regarding
how to establish good classroom management in my first class?
Keeping yourself organized.
Taking one step at a time.
Do not overwhelm yourself or your students.
Being consistent in how you approach issues in your classroom.
Repeat as often as necessary. She mentions that this key factor is often forgotten
after two weeks of school. Teacher’s need to repeat the procedures and rules in
the classroom because students at young age have not developed a sense of
awareness and memorization of all the expectations in the classroom. It is key to
repeat on a daily basis and as much as is needed.

10. [Ask one of these 2 questions: When you know that a student has a specific need that
most of the other students do not have, what do you do to address that need?
–or-
How do you incorporate UDL into your classroom?]
She has been learning more every day and she likes using it for interventions and maybe
you cannot meet all the 30 students depending on their learning. But it is important to
create and add your UDL’s in you lesson to use manipulatives, charts, to meet the needs of
the students.
