m₂g-m₁g=(m₁+m₂)a
Or a=(m2-m1)g/(m2+m1)
Question:Two mass m1=3kg and m2=5kg attached by a massless string are hanging on a frictionless
pulley.If acceleration due to gravity is 10ms-²,calculate the acceleration of the system
First,we have to note that (i)the system will accelerate down the 5kg mass: because,5kg is more massive
than 3kg
(ii) tension is always opposite to the direction of the weight of each mass
(i) weight (m₂g-downward) (ii) Tension,T (upward) and (iii) the force causing it to accelerate,m₂a
m₂g-T=m₂a........1
Forces are (i) weight (m₁g ,downward) (ii) Tension,T (upward) and (iii) force causing acceleration (m₁a
upward)
Since m₁ is moving upward
T-m₁g=m₁a........2
To get acceleration,
We have
m₂g-T+ T -m₁g=m₂a+m₂a
T cancels out
m₂g-m₁g=m₂a+m₁a
(m₂-m₁)g=(m₂+m₁) a
a=(m₂-m₁)g/(m₂+m₁)
Wow
a=(m₂-m₁)g /(m₂+m₁)
a=(5-3)10/(5+3)
a=2(10)/8=20/8=2.5ms-²
N:B when applying this formula,make sure the more massive object is taken as m₂ and the less massive
is m₁(though not compulsory.If m₁ is less massive and you take it as m₂,you'll arrive at same answer but
with negative value(meaning it is in opposite direction)
❤️Tension made easy❤️
Simply as
Acceleration is equal to the difference of the masses divided by the sum of the mass times g!
Try this
*Two masses,6kg and 9kg attached to the end of a string are hanging over a frictionless pulley, calculate
the acceleration of the system and in what direction?
Miscellaneous
*Two masses ,m and 2m attached to a massless rope are hanging over a frictionless pulley. Calculate the
acceleration of the system and in what direction?
