The basic composition of this system is the following:

 ADS-B Receiver.
 Omni-directional antenna.
 RF Filter.

The figure below represents the architecture of a basic ADSB-GSS/10 system.

Figure 1.6-1. Architecture of a Basic ADSB-GSS/10 System

The external hardware of the ADS-B Receiver unit has been designed with standard dimensions (19”
width) suitable to be installed inside a rack, if necessary.
Currently, this receiver is prepared to use two different compositions of Omni-directional antenna. One
comprising a single element (single antenna) and another with three (multi-sector antenna). For the
first case, one RF filter is used; for the second, three RF filters are used, one for each receiving
element.
Output ADS-B reports generated by the receiver are provided to external systems through two
redundant Ethernet ports, by using standard internet protocols (IP/UDP/IGMP).
An appropriate operation of the ADSB-GSS/10 system requires to be synchronised to UTC time in
order to timestamp UTC time on each generated ADS-B report. This synchronization can be obtained
either via Ethernet through an external NTP time server, or by installation of its own GPS Timing
system.
Other optional subsystem is a Control and Monitoring system (CMS). This system can be added to the
ADSB-GSS/10 system in order to monitor the system BITE results or modify the system setting
internal parameters. It must be connected to the ADSB-GSS/10 system via Ethernet and through a
LAN of the system.
Other auxiliary elements could be used depending on the communication needs of the system either
at the ground station or at the ACC station; e.g.: switches, routers, etc. In that case, these elements
are not considered as belonging to the ADSB-GSS/10 system.

ADS-B Ground Station System

Indra’s ADSB-GSS/10 system has four standard hardware configurations or models, providing certain
flexibility to the system in order to offer an adequate solution to specific requirements of each
customer.
Naming of the ADSB GSS is “ADSB-GSS/AA/BB/CMS” where:
 AA represents the redundancy
 10 for single reception channel.
 20 for double reception channel with RF switches.
 21 for double reception channel with RF splitters.
 22 for double reception channels with dual antenna.
 BB represents the antenna
 A1 for single sector omni antenna.
 A3 for three sectors omni antenna.
 CMS indicates the availability or not of external CMS display
In order to increase the availability of the system, it can be equipped with redundancy. In this case,
these models are referenced as ADSB-GSS/2X. There are several redundancy levels; the level of
redundancy is indicated by the less significant digit. These configurations are shown in Table 1.6-1.
The models with redundancy are based basically in the installation design and the LRU modules are
the same and they are explained in this document.
The Table 1.6-1 shows a list of standard models indicating their main differences:

ADS-B Ground Station System

2. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

2.1 ADS-B MAIN CONCEPTS

An ADS-B system is defined by ICAO as a surveillance technique in which aircraft, aerodrome

vehicles and other objects automatically provide and or receive through the appropriate data link, data
derived from on-board navigation and position-fixing systems, including aircraft identification, four-
dimensional position, and additional data as appropriate.

ADS-B technique is called “dependent” because it relies on on-board navigation sources and on-board
broadcast transmission systems to provide surveillance information to other users. The target
originating the broadcast may or may not have knowledge of which users are receiving its broadcast;
any user, either aircraft or ground based, within range of this broadcast, may choose to receive and
process the ADS-B surveillance information.

ADS-B technique is also called “Automatic” because no external stimulus is required to generate and
send the surveillance information from a target.

ADS-B systems can be used to provide:

 Air-to-ground surveillance; i.e., surveillance of aircraft by ground systems.

 Air-to-air surveillance; i.e., surveillance between two aircraft, without the presence of a ground
infrastructure.
 Ground-to-ground surveillance; i.e., surveillance of aircraft when on the ground by ground
systems.

Therefore, ADS-B systems can provide surveillance coverage “gate-to-gate”; i.e., from the aircraft’s
first movement on the ground, through all phases of its flight and back onto the ground.

2.1.1 ADS-B SYSTEMS

The introduction of ADS-B systems is expected to provide enhancements to the services currently
provided. The enhanced services are expected to be similar to the services provided in a SSR
environment. The extent of these enhancements is dependent on the level and nature of ADS-B
equipage on aircraft. The benefits will be maximized in regions where all aircraft are ADS-B equipped.
In particular, the Air Traffic Control Service will be enhanced by providing controllers with improved
situational awareness of aircraft positions, along with the possibility of applying minimum separation
smaller than those presently used with procedural separation. The Alerting Service will be enhanced
by more accurate information on the latest position of aircraft.
Hence, it is expected that this application will provide benefits to capacity, efficiency and safety, similar
to the benefits that would be achieved by use of SSR where it is not in use today.
Whilst the responsibilities of the controller and pilot remain unchanged, there may be a slight impact
on procedures with the introduction of surveillance services. The flight crews will interface to the ADS-
B transmitter in a similar way as to an SSR transponder.

ADS-B Ground Station System

There are different technologies with capability to provide ADS-B service. The most important are the
following:
 1090 Extended Squitter.
 VHF Datalink Mode 4 (VDL/4 or S-TDMA).
 Universal Access Transceiver (UAT).

1090 Extended Squitter is an extension to the Mode-S functionality and was approved its inclusion in
Annex 10 (Ref. [4]) in 1997. Its main characteristics are:

 Single Channel (at 1090 MHz).

 Fixed reporting rates for ADS-B reports.
 Regular and spontaneous transmissions.

VHF Datalink Mode 4 (VDL/4 or S-TDMA) is a new system developed in Sweden. Its main
characteristics are:

 Multiple Channels (frequency band of 118-137 MHz).

 Variable reporting rates for ADS-B reports according to the operational application.

Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) is other new system developed by Mitre in USA. Its main
characteristics are:

 Single Channel (at 966 MHz).

 Fixed reporting rates for ADS-B reports.

There are two main on-board ADS-B functionalities, called as:

 ADS-B OUT: It is the capability of a target to transmit ADS-B information.

 ADS-B IN: It is the capability of a target to receive and process ADS-B Out information from other
target.
A first package of ground and airborne surveillance applications enabled by ADS-B and collectively
called “Package I” was initiated in 2003. All applications defined within Package I are supported by
ADS-B given a sufficient level of equipage of aircraft broadcasting ADS-B positional information and
Ground Stations and other aircraft receiving and processing that same data.
The applications within Package I fall into two categories and are dealt with by the Requirement Focus
Group using the following terms:
ADS-B Package I Ground Based Surveillance Applications, which are:
 ADS-B-NRA Enhanced ATS in non-radar areas using ADS-B Surveillance.
 ADS-B-RAD Enhanced ATS in radar areas using ADS-B surveillance.
 ADS-B-APT Airport surface surveillance.
 ADS-B-ADD Aircraft derived data for ATC tools.

ADS-B Ground Station System

ADS-B Package I Airborne based Surveillance Applications, which are:

 ATSA-VSA Enhanced visual separation on approach.
 ATSA-ITP In-trail procedure in oceanic airspace.
 ATSA-AIRB Enhanced traffic situational awareness during flight operations.
 ATSA-SURF Enhanced traffic situational awareness on the airport surface.
 ASPA-S&M Enhanced sequencing and merging operations.

NOTE: ADS-B-RAD is a combination of ADS-B-ACC and ADS-B-TMA, which defined ATC services
based on ADS-B in en-route and terminal areas, respectively in Package I.
The packaging approach is regarded as pragmatic and aims at the early implementation of these
applications on a worldwide basis.
The ADS-B-NRA application as defined in EUROCONTROL ED-126 (REF.[3]) document will provide
enhanced Air Traffic Services in areas where radar surveillance currently does not exist.

Examples of environments that might be candidates for the ADS-B-NRA application include remote
continental areas of low-to-medium aircraft traffic density, oceanic airspace, areas with oilrigs or other
concentrated operations, and small islands. Further, areas now under radar coverage might have a
business case for introducing ADS-B instead of replacing aging radar systems.
The ADS-B-NRA application is designed to enhance the following ICAO Air Traffic Services:

 Air Traffic Control Service and Flight Information Service mainly for:
 Air traffic control separation services.
 Transfer of responsibility for control.
 Air traffic control clearances.
 Flight information services.

 Alerting services, mainly for

 Notification of rescue co-ordination centers.
 Plotting of aircraft in a state of emergency.

An important distinction between operations in radar surveillance and operations in ADS-B

surveillance is that the source of the position information in ADS-B NRA is dependent (e.g. on GNSS),
and some of the hazards and/or mitigation strategies may differ from those in a radar environment.
The method of detecting failures or errors may also differ due to the dependent nature of the position
source.

ADS-B Ground Station System

ED-126 (REF.[3]) assumes that there is no change to the controller–pilot communications

infrastructure, and that no changes are made to the existing navigational aid infrastructure. The
application is designed for use in airspace classes A to E and complies with ATC procedures.
The ADS-B-RAD application will enable an enhancement of Air Traffic Services in areas where radar
surveillance currently exists and will apply to en-route and terminal phases of flight in airspace classes
(A to E).
The introduction of ADS-B may enhance these services by improving the overall quality of surveillance
(i.e. radar + ADS-B), especially when (and where) many aircraft become ADS-B equipped.
Benefits are expected from the improvements in quality of surveillance when ADS-B information is
added to the existing radar surveillance environment. Furthermore, in the longer term, surveillance
infrastructure costs may be reduced by replacing some of the SSR stations required to provide multi-
radar cover by ADS-B (assuming that the costs of ADS B sensors will be significantly less than SSR).
In this scenario consideration would need to be made of ADS-B equipage rates (in a similar way to
Mode A/C equipage rates). The intention of this application is to allow the procedures currently using
radar to be continued and enhanced by ADS-B.
The Figure 2.1.1-1 presents the generic ADS-B functional architecture considered by the Requirement
Focus Group for all its applications.
For the ADS-B-NRA and ADS-B-RAD applications, only the airborne ADS-B transmission (or “ADS-B
out”) domain and ground domain are pertinent, as ADS-B information is not required to be received by
other aircraft for the ground surveillance applications.

2.2 SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

Indra’s ADS-B Ground Station (from now ADSB-GSS in this document) is a 1090 ES Ground Station,
mainly made up by a receiver device named ADS-B Receiver, together with other ancillary elements
which define several hardware configurations for the final system.

The basic composition of this system is the following:

 ADS-B Receiver.
 Omni-directional antenna.
 RF Filter.

The figure below represents the architecture of a basic ADSB-GSS/10 system.

Figure 2.2-1.

One
comprising a single element (single antenna) and another for three (multi-sector antenna). For the first
case, one RF filter is used; for the second, three RF filters are used, one for each element.

The main functionalities of this unit are the following:

 Processes 1090 Extended Squitter signals broadcasted from targets.

 Obtains ADS-B information received from an aircraft, depending on transponder version:
 Aircraft Identification.
 Airborne Position.
 Airborne Velocity.
 Mode A Code.
 Aircraft Operational Status, etc.

 Timestamp with UTC time each ADS-B report. This process needs an external synchronization
with a time server what is performed either via Ethernet, e.g. through an NTP Timing Server, or
via its own time server.
 Send ADS-B reports to ACC using an standard data format (ASTERIX cat. 021). This information
is redundantly sent via Ethernet.

To do all these processes, this unit has loaded specific firmware and software applications. The
software applications run on a Linux Operating System, and both are loaded on HDD. This receiver
has two redundant HDDs which work on a master/slave configuration.
Furthermore, this receiver has two Ethernet communication ports in order to transfer data either
through one or two independent and external local area networks (LAN), using standard protocols
such as IP, UDP, IGMP and NTP.

A functional block diagram of this unit is shown in the figure below.

2.2.1.2 Description of TRPG Board

This board has the following main functional features:

 Removable PCI bus board.
 3 independent reception channels.
 Features of each reception channel:
 1 input RF signal (1090 MHz).
 1 output Video signal.
 Tangential sensitivity better than or equal to -87 dBm.
 Minimum dynamic range of 70 dB.
 BITE information generation.

Each reception channel of this board processes the 1090 ES signal received from its corresponding
antenna. This signal is filtered, amplified and demodulated to obtain a raw video signal, which is send
to the TPPG Board to continue its process.

The Figure 2.2.1.2-1 shows the connections of this board.

This board has the following main functional features:

 Removable PCI bus board.
 3 independent video processors.
 Features of each Video processor:
 1 input Video signal.
 A/D Converter.
 1090 ES Reply (DF17) processor.
 ES Message extractor.
 ADS-B report generator.
 BITE information generator.

Each Video processor of this board processes a raw video signal coming from a reception channel of
the TRPG board, in order to obtain the ES message information.
In general, each Video Processor includes the following functions: raw video sampling, pulse
detection, Downlink Format preamble detection, data extraction, CRC checking and error correction.
For each Extended Squitter message processed, the video processor generates a time stamped ADS-
B data report which is sent to the TCPU board. The timestamp is obtained from the UTC time
information generated by the TGPS board (GPS Timing System).
Each ADS-B data report has the following information:
 Report header.
 Detection Flags: CRC status, detection chain number, BITE status, etc.
 Message contents.

2.2.1.4 Description of TCPU Board

This board has the following main functional features:

 Removable PCI bus board.
 ADS-B Reports reception.
 Boards BITE Information reception.
 ASTERIX Data generation.
 General BITE Information generation.
 IP, UDP, IGMP & NTP Protocols interface.

 2 Ethernet ports for external LANs.

The Figure 2.2.1.4-1 shows some of the connections of this board.

Figure 2.2.1.4-1. TCPU Board of ADS-B Receiver

The TCPU board processes the ADS-B reports received from the TPPG board, performing the
following main functions:

 Messages Decoding: It is done according to the Minimum Operational Performance Standards

(MOPS) for 1090ES published as RTCA DO-260, DO-260A and DO-260B. The position
messages are decoded and validated using Compact Positioning Reporting (CPR) for
unambiguous aircraft positions, in latitude and longitude, according to standard WGS-84.
 Data Correlation: Any new report received is correlated with the reports before received, to
detect and clear duplicate messages either when a multi-element antenna is being used or
because of reception of reflected signals.
 Plot Data Tracking: A track data block is generated for each target detected, to store all
information received about it. This allows defining the expiration time for each data type as well
as estimating its next position to help decoding tasks.
 Plot Formatting: The final plot information obtained is formatted in ASTERIX category 021, and
sent out via Ethernet.

ADS-B Ground Station System

This board is able to process up to 3000 ADS-B reports per second.

This board receives BITE information from the rest of boards and prepares a general BITE report to be
sent to an external CMS system.
When an external CMS system is used, this board transfers messages with it, via Ethernet and using
standard protocols (IP/UDP/IGMP), in order to send it information about the current state of BITE and
configuration of the receiver or receive control data from it.
This board also has the function of NTP timing server on external local area networks, via Ethernet.
The content of the Category 021 ASTERIX reports is fully configurable by the user, and will depend on
the version used. The system can be configured to work with all EUROCONTROL versions.

2.2.2 Omni-Directional Antenna

The ADSB-GSS System has an ADS-B Receiver with three RF inputs to connect an external omni-
directional antenna which works at a central frequency of 1090 MHz. Single Antenna
When the system works with a single antenna, this is normally omni-directional and have a working
central frequency at 1090MHz. In this case, the antenna can be connected to any of the three RF
inputs of the ADS-B receiver through an external RF Filter.
In the Appendix A of this document, the different types of single antenna are described.

2.2.2.1 Multi-Sector Antenna

When the system works with a multi sector antenna, i.e. with three radiant elements, the total gain
pattern of the antenna must be omni-directional and have a working central frequency at 1090MHz. In
this case, each element must be connected to one of the three RF inputs of the ADS-B receiver
through an external RF Filter. Therefore, three RF filters are needed.
In the Appendix B of this document, the different types of multi-sector antenna are described.

2.2.3 RF Filter, Switch and Splitter

A cavity filter centred to 1090 MHz is externally used by the ADSB-GSS system to reject out-band
signals that could provoke interferences to the system.
One RF filter is needed for each input RF channel used in the ADS-B receiver.
The Figure 2.2.3-1 shows the connections of this element.

Figure 2.2.3-1. RF Filter

Optionally, the redundant models ADSB-GSS/20 and ADSB-GSS/21 are equipped with RF switches
and RF splitters respectively to feed the incoming signals to the main receiver or both receivers,
respectively.

2.2.4 Ancillary Subsystems

2.2.4.1 GPS Timing System

When the ADSB-GSS system has installed its own time server which provides a GPS synchronization
to obtain UTC time, this is used by the ADS-B Receiver unit to timestamp ADS-B reports with UTC
time.

This system would be composed of the following elements:

 A removable PCI bus Board, which is installed inside the ADS-B Receiver.
 A GPS Antenna, which is installed outdoor.

The GPS Timing System is described in the Appendix C of this document.

2.2.4.2 Control and Monitoring System (CMS)

Optionally, the ADSB-GSS System can have an external subsystem which is prepared to control and
monitor the system operation. This function is performed via Ethernet, through the local area network
of the system. The Figure 2.2.4.2-1 shows the architecture of an ADSB-GSS/10 system with a CMS
system.

2.2.4.3 Local Area Network System (LAN)

A Local Area Network system is needed when the ADSB-GSS system requires data transference with
several external devices via Ethernet. In this case, all those devices must use the same standard
protocols such as IP, UDP and IGMP, and must be configured to work inside a common network.
To prepare a LAN network, a switch device is normally used as network node. In the case of the
ADSB-GSS system, this has two Ethernet ports prepared to work with two independent and redundant
LAN networks (e.g. called LAN1 and LAN2).
The Figure 2.2.4.3-1 shows the architecture of a ADSB-GSS/10 system connected to two LAN
networks (LAN1 & LAN2) through two switches.

Figure 2.2.4.3-1. Basic ADSB-GSS/10 System Connected to Two LAN Networks

2.2.4.4 External Communications Interface System

An External Communications Interface system is needed when the ADSB-GSS system requires data
transference with external devices located at remote sites where the direct connection via Ethernet
cable is not possible.
In this case, the communication between the ADSB-GSS system and remote devices is performed
through router interfaces and by using standard protocols such as IP, UDP and IGMP. In addition,
routers must be configured to work inside a common local area network together the ADSB-GSS/10
system.
The Figure 2.2.4.4-1 shows the architecture of a ADSB-GSS/10 system connected to two router
devices, through two independent and redundant LAN networks.

A.1.2 Installation Overview

Single Antenna must be installed on a flat and firm base and sufficiently high to provide the best
possible coverage to the system. The fixing of the antenna to the base or support structure must be
according to its mechanical interface (see figure below).

Figure A.1.2-1. Mechanical & Electrical Interfaces of ATC-S08 Antenna

Under the base of the antenna, there is an input RF connection to connect the coaxial cable of the
installation. This connection uses one N-type female connector. This antenna also has a power supply
connector to provide power to dual LED obstruction lights.

B.1 MULTI-SECTOR ANTENNA #1

B.1.1 General Description

Multi-Sector Antenna #1 is an omni-directional antenna made up three radiant elements or antenna

columns, equidistantly distributed around 360º.
Each antenna column consists of 10 half-wave dipoles and phase-feeding lines, all them protected
with a fibreglass cover.
The figure below shows an example of antenna structure with the three columns together and its
radiation pattern.

C. GPS TIMING SYSTEM.

C.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This optional system is used to provide to the ADSB-GSS system a GPS synchronization to obtain
UTC time. This time is used to stamp UTC time on each ADS-B data generated by the ADS-B
Receiver unit, indicating when obtained. Furthermore, it can provide a time synchronization service to
other external devices connected to local area networks (LAN) of the system, as NTP Time Server, via
Ethernet.
It is composed of the following elements:
 TGPS Board: it is installed inside ADS-B Receiver.
 GPS Antenna: it is installed outdoor.

The figure below shows the main connections of those elements.

Figure C.1-1. Elements of the GPS Timing System

The GPS Antenna has the following features:

 Semi-spherical gain pattern.

 Convert the signal of 1575.42 MHz received from GPS satellites to a signal of intermediate
frequency at 35.4MHz (IF) which is sent to the TGPS board.
 Only one N-type connection for coaxial cable.
 The maximum length of coaxial cable with the TGPS board is 300 meters with standard coaxial
cable RG58.

 A DC power signal (between 12 DCV and 18 DCV) is needed which is provided by the TGPS
board through the same coaxial cable used for the IF signal.

The TGPS board has the following features:

 Removable PCI bus board

 Two independent GPS receivers.
 Provide external synchronization (NTP time server).
 Integrate a highly accurate time base in the receiver for timestamping events.
 Time accuracy better than or equal to 250ns
 2 BNC-type GPS antenna connections

C.1.1 Installation Procedure

In general, the installation of this system can be performed following these steps:
Step 1 Switch off the ADS-B Receiver unit through the power switch located on its front panel (see
figure below). Open the front cover to access to the ON/OFF switch.

Figure C.1.1-1. Front Panel of the ADS-B Receiver Unit

Step 2 Disconnect the AC power cord of the ADS-B Receiver unit.
