1.5 SCOPE
Indra’s ADS-B Ground Station (from now ADSB-GSS in this document) is a 1090 ES Ground Station,
mainly made up a receiver device named ADS-B Receiver, together with other ancillary elements
which define several hardware configurations for the final system.
The ADSB-GSS System has been developed according to the most advanced international standards
and latest technologies in this field. It includes the following main operation features:
High level of integration and modularization using the latest proven technologies.
Compliant with RTCA DO-260, DO-260A, DO-260B. (REF.[4]).
The system receives 1090 ES replies from targets, processes ES message and codifies the final
ADS-B information in ASTERIX category 021 reports, before sending it to ACC.
Provides Management service (is also possible to include an external CMS).
Designed for minimum maintenance and minimum downtime.
Designed for unattended operation.
Flexible, versatile, and open-system solution based on COTS products, easily adaptable to
customers’ needs.
Possibility to operate on narrowband communication lines such as telephone lines, UHF linkages
or VSAT links, via Ethernet and by using their appropriate interfaces.
The external hardware of the ADS-B Receiver unit has been designed with standard dimensions (19”
width) suitable to be installed inside a rack, if necessary.
Currently, this receiver is prepared to use two different compositions of Omni-directional antenna. One
comprising a single element (single antenna) and another with three (multi-sector antenna). For the
first case, one RF filter is used; for the second, three RF filters are used, one for each receiving
element.
Output ADS-B reports generated by the receiver are provided to external systems through two
redundant Ethernet ports, by using standard internet protocols (IP/UDP/IGMP).
An appropriate operation of the ADSB-GSS/10 system requires to be synchronised to UTC time in
order to timestamp UTC time on each generated ADS-B report. This synchronization can be obtained
either via Ethernet through an external NTP time server, or by installation of its own GPS Timing
system.
Other optional subsystem is a Control and Monitoring system (CMS). This system can be added to the
ADSB-GSS/10 system in order to monitor the system BITE results or modify the system setting
internal parameters. It must be connected to the ADSB-GSS/10 system via Ethernet and through a
LAN of the system.
Other auxiliary elements could be used depending on the communication needs of the system either
at the ground station or at the ACC station; e.g.: switches, routers, etc. In that case, these elements
are not considered as belonging to the ADSB-GSS/10 system.
Indra’s ADSB-GSS/10 system has four standard hardware configurations or models, providing certain
flexibility to the system in order to offer an adequate solution to specific requirements of each
customer.
Naming of the ADSB GSS is “ADSB-GSS/AA/BB/CMS” where:
AA represents the redundancy
10 for single reception channel.
20 for double reception channel with RF switches.
21 for double reception channel with RF splitters.
22 for double reception channels with dual antenna.
BB represents the antenna
A1 for single sector omni antenna.
A3 for three sectors omni antenna.
CMS indicates the availability or not of external CMS display
In order to increase the availability of the system, it can be equipped with redundancy. In this case,
these models are referenced as ADSB-GSS/2X. There are several redundancy levels; the level of
redundancy is indicated by the less significant digit. These configurations are shown in Table 1.6-1.
The models with redundancy are based basically in the installation design and the LRU modules are
the same and they are explained in this document.
The Table 1.6-1 shows a list of standard models indicating their main differences:

2. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
ADS-B technique is called “dependent” because it relies on on-board navigation sources and on-board
broadcast transmission systems to provide surveillance information to other users. The target
originating the broadcast may or may not have knowledge of which users are receiving its broadcast;
any user, either aircraft or ground based, within range of this broadcast, may choose to receive and
process the ADS-B surveillance information.
ADS-B technique is also called “Automatic” because no external stimulus is required to generate and
send the surveillance information from a target.
Therefore, ADS-B systems can provide surveillance coverage “gate-to-gate”; i.e., from the aircraft’s
first movement on the ground, through all phases of its flight and back onto the ground.
The introduction of ADS-B systems is expected to provide enhancements to the services currently
provided. The enhanced services are expected to be similar to the services provided in a SSR
environment. The extent of these enhancements is dependent on the level and nature of ADS-B
equipage on aircraft. The benefits will be maximized in regions where all aircraft are ADS-B equipped.
In particular, the Air Traffic Control Service will be enhanced by providing controllers with improved
situational awareness of aircraft positions, along with the possibility of applying minimum separation
smaller than those presently used with procedural separation. The Alerting Service will be enhanced
by more accurate information on the latest position of aircraft.
Hence, it is expected that this application will provide benefits to capacity, efficiency and safety, similar
to the benefits that would be achieved by use of SSR where it is not in use today.
Whilst the responsibilities of the controller and pilot remain unchanged, there may be a slight impact
on procedures with the introduction of surveillance services. The flight crews will interface to the ADS-
B transmitter in a similar way as to an SSR transponder.
There are different technologies with capability to provide ADS-B service. The most important are the
following:
1090 Extended Squitter.
VHF Datalink Mode 4 (VDL/4 or S-TDMA).
Universal Access Transceiver (UAT).
1090 Extended Squitter is an extension to the Mode-S functionality and was approved its inclusion in
Annex 10 (Ref. [4]) in 1997. Its main characteristics are:
VHF Datalink Mode 4 (VDL/4 or S-TDMA) is a new system developed in Sweden. Its main
characteristics are:
Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) is other new system developed by Mitre in USA. Its main
characteristics are:
NOTE: ADS-B-RAD is a combination of ADS-B-ACC and ADS-B-TMA, which defined ATC services
based on ADS-B in en-route and terminal areas, respectively in Package I.
The packaging approach is regarded as pragmatic and aims at the early implementation of these
applications on a worldwide basis.
The ADS-B-NRA application as defined in EUROCONTROL ED-126 (REF.[3]) document will provide
enhanced Air Traffic Services in areas where radar surveillance currently does not exist.
Examples of environments that might be candidates for the ADS-B-NRA application include remote
continental areas of low-to-medium aircraft traffic density, oceanic airspace, areas with oilrigs or other
concentrated operations, and small islands. Further, areas now under radar coverage might have a
business case for introducing ADS-B instead of replacing aging radar systems.
The ADS-B-NRA application is designed to enhance the following ICAO Air Traffic Services:
Air Traffic Control Service and Flight Information Service mainly for:
Air traffic control separation services.
Transfer of responsibility for control.
Air traffic control clearances.
Flight information services.

Indra’s ADS-B Ground Station (from now ADSB-GSS in this document) is a 1090 ES Ground Station,
mainly made up by a receiver device named ADS-B Receiver, together with other ancillary elements
which define several hardware configurations for the final system.
ADS-B Receiver.
Omni-directional antenna.
RF Filter.
The external hardware of the ADS-B Receiver unit has been designed with standard dimensions (19”
width) suitable to be installed inside a rack, if necessary.
Currently, this receiver is prepared to use two different compositions of Omni-directional antenna. One
comprising a single element (single antenna) and another for three (multi-sector antenna). For the first
case, one RF filter is used; for the second, three RF filters are used, one for each element.
ADS-B Receiver is the main element of Indra’s ADSB-GSS System. Physically, it is a rackmount
computer (see figure below) with removable boards on a PCI bus backplane.
This rackmount computer is equipped with the following main elements (see figure below):
(1) TCPU Board: Main ADS-B Processor Board.
(2) TPPG Board: Video Signal Processor Board.
(3) TRPG Board: 1090 ES Signal Processor Board.
(4) PCI bus Backplane.
(5) Two Redundant and Removable Power Supply modules.
(6) Two Redundant and Removable RAID HDDs and one CD/DVD drive.
Timestamp with UTC time each ADS-B report. This process needs an external synchronization
with a time server what is performed either via Ethernet, e.g. through an NTP Timing Server, or
via its own time server.
Send ADS-B reports to ACC using an standard data format (ASTERIX cat. 021). This information
is redundantly sent via Ethernet.
To do all these processes, this unit has loaded specific firmware and software applications. The
software applications run on a Linux Operating System, and both are loaded on HDD. This receiver
has two redundant HDDs which work on a master/slave configuration.
Furthermore, this receiver has two Ethernet communication ports in order to transfer data either
through one or two independent and external local area networks (LAN), using standard protocols
such as IP, UDP, IGMP and NTP.
Each reception channel of this board processes the 1090 ES signal received from its corresponding
antenna. This signal is filtered, amplified and demodulated to obtain a raw video signal, which is send
to the TPPG Board to continue its process.
Each Video processor of this board processes a raw video signal coming from a reception channel of
the TRPG board, in order to obtain the ES message information.
In general, each Video Processor includes the following functions: raw video sampling, pulse
detection, Downlink Format preamble detection, data extraction, CRC checking and error correction.
For each Extended Squitter message processed, the video processor generates a time stamped ADS-
B data report which is sent to the TCPU board. The timestamp is obtained from the UTC time
information generated by the TGPS board (GPS Timing System).
Each ADS-B data report has the following information:
Report header.
Detection Flags: CRC status, detection chain number, BITE status, etc.
Message contents.
Message Bit based confidence.
The Figure 2.2.1.3-1 shows the main connections of this board.
The TCPU board processes the ADS-B reports received from the TPPG board, performing the
following main functions:
The ADSB-GSS System has an ADS-B Receiver with three RF inputs to connect an external omni-
directional antenna which works at a central frequency of 1090 MHz. Single Antenna
When the system works with a single antenna, this is normally omni-directional and have a working
central frequency at 1090MHz. In this case, the antenna can be connected to any of the three RF
inputs of the ADS-B receiver through an external RF Filter.
In the Appendix A of this document, the different types of single antenna are described.
When the system works with a multi sector antenna, i.e. with three radiant elements, the total gain
pattern of the antenna must be omni-directional and have a working central frequency at 1090MHz. In
this case, each element must be connected to one of the three RF inputs of the ADS-B receiver
through an external RF Filter. Therefore, three RF filters are needed.
In the Appendix B of this document, the different types of multi-sector antenna are described.
A cavity filter centred to 1090 MHz is externally used by the ADSB-GSS system to reject out-band
signals that could provoke interferences to the system.
One RF filter is needed for each input RF channel used in the ADS-B receiver.
The Figure 2.2.3-1 shows the connections of this element.
Optionally, the redundant models ADSB-GSS/20 and ADSB-GSS/21 are equipped with RF switches
and RF splitters respectively to feed the incoming signals to the main receiver or both receivers,
respectively.
When the ADSB-GSS system has installed its own time server which provides a GPS synchronization
to obtain UTC time, this is used by the ADS-B Receiver unit to timestamp ADS-B reports with UTC
time.
A removable PCI bus Board, which is installed inside the ADS-B Receiver.
A GPS Antenna, which is installed outdoor.
The Figure 2.2.4.1-1 shows the architecture of a system with a GPS Timing system.
Optionally, the ADSB-GSS System can have an external subsystem which is prepared to control and
monitor the system operation. This function is performed via Ethernet, through the local area network
of the system. The Figure 2.2.4.2-1 shows the architecture of an ADSB-GSS/10 system with a CMS
system.
For this case, any models of the system can be identified adding /CMS at the end of the model
description.
The Control & Monitoring System is described in the Appendix D of this document.
A Local Area Network system is needed when the ADSB-GSS system requires data transference with
several external devices via Ethernet. In this case, all those devices must use the same standard
protocols such as IP, UDP and IGMP, and must be configured to work inside a common network.
To prepare a LAN network, a switch device is normally used as network node. In the case of the
ADSB-GSS system, this has two Ethernet ports prepared to work with two independent and redundant
LAN networks (e.g. called LAN1 and LAN2).
The Figure 2.2.4.3-1 shows the architecture of a ADSB-GSS/10 system connected to two LAN
networks (LAN1 & LAN2) through two switches.
An External Communications Interface system is needed when the ADSB-GSS system requires data
transference with external devices located at remote sites where the direct connection via Ethernet
cable is not possible.
In this case, the communication between the ADSB-GSS system and remote devices is performed
through router interfaces and by using standard protocols such as IP, UDP and IGMP. In addition,
routers must be configured to work inside a common local area network together the ADSB-GSS/10
system.
The Figure 2.2.4.4-1 shows the architecture of a ADSB-GSS/10 system connected to two router
devices, through two independent and redundant LAN networks.
Figure 2.2.4.4-1. Basic ADSB-GSS/10 System Connected to Routers through Two LAN Networks
The Table 2.3-1 shows a general list of the main technical features of ADSB-GSS System.
3. USER INTERFACE
3.1 INTRODUCTION
The user can take the control of the ADS-B Receiver using Windows application called GestAdsbTM
or HTTP application called MINT (Monitoring Indra Network Tool).
The GestAdsbTM application can run as part of a Control and Monitoring System (option), or on any
PC running Windows 7 O.S. as stand-alone application.
MINT uses standard HTML protocol to be represented.
The user interface of ADSB-GSS starts when clicking in the GestAdsbTM application icon (see Figure
3.2-1).
By clicking on the LAN Icon ( ) the LAN configuration parameters window appears (see Figure 3.2-
3). From this screen it is possible to set the LAN parameters to connect GestAdsbTM application to
ADSB-GSS equipment.
After closing this window and pressing "h", the main screen of the GestAdsbTM application on the
ADSB-GSS equipment will appear (see Figure 3.2-4).
The access to the Monitor screen is performed from the main screen of the application GestAdsbTM,
typing the key “1”. This screen is shown in Figure 3.2.1-1.
TRPG BITE: Reception Board status. (OK/FAIL). If a fail is present, reboot and check the

SINGLE ANTENNAS
A. SINGLE ANTENNAS
Single Antenna consists of 8 half-wave dipoles, phase-feeding lines and red dual obstruction lights.
The horizontal pattern is obtained by omni-directional radiation pattern of each dipole; the vertical
pattern is realized by right feeding and location of radiation elements.
The figure below shows the antenna and its radiation patterns.
The top of antenna is equipped with dual LED obstruction light with power supply and twilight switch.
Monitor probes are located inside the fibreglass radome being supporting structure of the antenna.
All feed lines additional are located inside the brass tube. Antenna is designed for ground-to-air DME
systems. It can be optionally equipped with LED lights and antifreeze system.
The general features of this antenna are shown in the following table.
VSWR <1.5
Impedance 50 Ω
Single Antenna must be installed on a flat and firm base and sufficiently high to provide the best
possible coverage to the system. The fixing of the antenna to the base or support structure must be
according to its mechanical interface (see figure below).
Under the base of the antenna, there is an input RF connection to connect the coaxial cable of the
installation. This connection uses one N-type female connector. This antenna also has a power supply
connector to provide power to dual LED obstruction lights.
The figure below shows a general scheme of the installation of an ADSB-GSS/10 system with an ATC-
S08 Antenna.

APPENDIX C
C.
This optional system is used to provide to the ADSB-GSS system a GPS synchronization to obtain
UTC time. This time is used to stamp UTC time on each ADS-B data generated by the ADS-B
Receiver unit, indicating when obtained. Furthermore, it can provide a time synchronization service to
other external devices connected to local area networks (LAN) of the system, as NTP Time Server, via
Ethernet.
It is composed of the following elements:
TGPS Board: it is installed inside ADS-B Receiver.
GPS Antenna: it is installed outdoor.
A DC power signal (between 12 DCV and 18 DCV) is needed which is provided by the TGPS
board through the same coaxial cable used for the IF signal.
In general, the installation of this system can be performed following these steps:
Step 1 Switch off the ADS-B Receiver unit through the power switch located on its front panel (see
figure below). Open the front cover to access to the ON/OFF switch.
Step 3 Open the upper cover of the ADS-B Receiver unit and remove the internal blocking bar
(see figure below) by using a screwdriver.
Step 4 Insert the TGPS board in the corresponding free slot of the PCI bus backplane (see figure
below) and tighten the bolt that holds the board fixed to the chassis (see figure below) by
using a screwdriver.
Figure C.1.1-3. Location of TGPS Board inside the ADS-B Receiver Unit
Step 5 Close the upper cover of the ADS-B Receiver unit, replacing its lateral bolts and tightening
them with a screwdriver.
Step 6 Reconnect the AC power cord of the ADS-B Receiver unit and turn it on.
Step 7 Install the GPS Antenna at a suitable place; i.e., outdoors, without obstacles around it and
on an appropriate support.
Step 8 Connect the coaxial cable between the GPS antenna and the corresponding input
connector of the ADS-B Receiver unit.
Note: The TGPS board has two independent and redundant GPS antenna connections.
Step 9 Install the corresponding drivers in the HDD of the ADS-B Receiver unit, following the
procedure defined by the manufacturer.
The figure below shows a general scheme of the installation of an ADSB-GSS/10 system with GPS
Timing system.
