COMBINED BENDING AND COMPRESSION LECTURE 12

LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR THIS LECTURE:

➢Design structural member subjected to combined
bending and compression.
COMBINED BENDING AND COMPRESSION
Beam-column with moment about the strong axis:

➢The P-Δ effect is not considered in moment

diagram
➢The P-Δ is then accounted by amplifying the
computed fb

➢FcE or critical buckling value
Where;
E’ = allowable modulus of elasticity adjusted for service conditions (moisture,
temperature)
d = dimension of column in plane of lateral support
le = effective column length in plane of lateral support
KcE = Euler buckling coefficient

SAMPLE PROBLEM:
BENDING AND COMPRESSION
Check the adequacy of the wood member used as
top chord on a truss as shown. The axial force and
bending loads for the visually graded sawn lumber
are shown below. Moisture conditions apply. The
top chord stays laterally throughout its length by
the roof sheathing. The given loads are expected
for duration of 2 months.
Note: K = 1.0 (Truss members are pinned connected both sides
