Surface Equipment
Otis Sand Control provides the quality filtration services and reliable
mixing and pumping equipment vital to successful sand control operations.
Filtration of completion and gravel pack fluids is as important to success-
ful sand control as selecting the proper pack sand size, carrier fluid , or
placement technique. Otis Sand Control offers a wide range of fluid
filtration systems for removal of suspended solids in completion fluids,
perforating fluids, and gravel packing fluids .
Foreign solids such as cement, scale, rust, etc. , in mixing and pumping
equipment can do irreparable damage to both the reservoir and pack
permeability. Otis Sand Control has dedicated mixing and pumping
equipment to ensure a safe, reliable, clean operation.
Otis Sand Control Surface Equipment is backed by the experience and skill
of Otis Sand Control Specialists and Research Groups to provide the technology
and service today's industry demands.

Otis~1 MCS Closing Sleeves provide additional iso-
. lation for gravel pack completions. The design allows a
. short di stance between the ports and lower hone bore for
minimal dead space while packing . A collet arrangement
is designed to hold the sleeve open during packing opera-
tions when the serv ice seal unit is installed , and hold the
sleeve closed when the service seal unit is removed . These
positioning collets do not drag the polished bore , so there
is no damage to the sealing surface while sh ifting the
sleeve. The sleeve is shifted by a self-releasing positive
positioning tool in stalled on the washpipe below the ser-
vice seal unit. This shi fti ng tool has large. open flow areas
around the OD and under the fingers of the tool s. Its
positive shift mechanism leaves no doubt about whether or
not the sleeve is shifted while packing. If necessary . the
closing sleeve may be re-opened and re-closed again by
simply lowering or raising the shifting tool through the
sleeve.

drillable packer for fracturing , acidizing, and other well
CASE stimulation operations where reversals in differential may

be encountered.
BENEFITS OF DESIGN PRINCIPLE
• Basic PERMA-TRIEVE®Packer design principles in-
cluded
• Functions as a production packer after gravel packing.
Large flow ports in flow sub allow slurry to flow with
less restriction
• Safety joint available to allow packer to be retrieved
without gravel pack screen

OPERATING PRINCIPLE
When the workstring and sand control equipment reach
setting depth. a setting ball is dropped and pump pres sure
applied down the tubing string . This pressure acts against
the seal unit' s setting pi ston to set the packer. The setting
pre ss ure shears a set of screws , allowing the anti-preset
1ugs on the sea l unit to retract. (Packer and seal unit remain
connected at the lower J-latch assembly. ) After packer is
se t, continued tubing pressure shears a set of screw s
designed to release the packer and service seal unit. Addi-
tional pre ss ure applied against the setting ball and seat
shears a se t of pin s and permits the ball and seat to move
do wn. Thi s allows ports to open in the lower end of the seal
unit for packing operations.
Once the packer is set and lo we r flow ports opened,
circulation is established through the seal unit. The seal
unit 's reciprocating J-Latch housing above the packer is
designed to lock the return flow ports open when the
tubing is rai sed and to lock the ports closed when tubing is
lowered.
With the Oti s design , slurry is pumped down the tubing
in stead of down the casing. This prev ents the possibility of .., ·1 -,
scale , rust. mud , and pipe dope in the casing being washed
down by the slurry and pluggin g the sand screen and
casing perforations.

Otis HGP Hydraulic-Set, Gravel Pack Packers
combine many of the features fo und in a permanent/
drillable packer for frac turing. acidizing, and other well
stimulation operations where reversal s in diffe renti al
press ure s may be encountered. Since they are hydraul i-
call y se t, HGP Packers are ideal for highl y deviated or
directional we ll s that make it diffi cult to rotate tubing or
set mechani cal- set packers. Yet they are designed to be
retrieved by a strai ght pull.

between the tubing string and packer. Seal assemblies
consist of three major components: (I) locator (2) molded
or premium seal units and (3) muleshoe guide, collet or
production tube .
Otis J-Slot Seal Assemblies are de signed to anchor
the tubing string and place tubing in tension or to reduce
upward movement of tubing due to contraction. The J-Slot
allows automatic latching by slacking off tubing. This
engages the J-Slot lugs in the packer. The latch is designed
to be released by lowering the tubing and rotating approxi-
mately one-third turn to the right at the packer. then
pulling upward on the tubing.

removed from the packer by a straight upward pull of the
tubing. 1

Otis RATCH-LATCH"· Seal Assemblies require no I I
tubing rotation for installation. This is a positive latch
sys tem that allows a minimum amount of seal movement
during the life to the well. The sys tem allows increased
tensile integrity at the latch and packer connection. Disen-
gagement is accomplished with right-hand rotation of the
tubing. The seal assembly may be relatched or pulled with
the tubing for redress operations . An alternate shear pinned
RATCH-LATCH version allows straight pull to release
from the packer.
Otis Seal Units are available in a variety of seal types

and gas industry . These internal sealing units , designed to (')

Sieve Analysi s - determines formation sand size ,
degree of uniformity, and amount of fines in the
formation. This in turn determines the pack sand size

• X-Ray Diffraction Analysi s - determine s both the
