ACTIVITY - 4

ARTICLES IN ENGLISH: A, AN, THE

In English there are two types of articles: indefinite articles (a, an) and definite articles

(the). Indefinite articles introduce a noun.

EXAMPLE:

Ms Smith is a businesswoman. She is in a hotel room. There is a bed, a carpet

and a bedside table in the room. On the bedside table there is a bedside lamp.

Ms Smith has got two pieces of luggage: a suitcase and a handbag. The suitcase is

very heavy.

The indefinite article, as its name indicates, does not define nouns. That is, it does not
refer to a specific object.

Used when the object is not specific.

Example: There is an apple on the table.

It has no gender, so it is neutral.

 A computer.
 A chair.
 A bottle.

It is used only for the singular form of nouns.

 A towel
 A table
 A door

Its usual form is a, unless it is preceded by a vowel, since in that case it would be an.

The exception to this rule occurs with the vowel u. If u has a consonant sound, ie [j] as
the <y> of "I", the form a should be used. This is much clearer in the following
examples:

 a university
 a unicorn
 a utopia

If, on the other hand, the sound of the u is vowel, as in [ʌ], the article an must be used,
let's see:

 an uncle
 an update
 an ulcer

The definite article is the one that determines the noun.

It has no gender.

 The flower
 the sofa
  the wáter

It can be used to refer to both the singular and plural forms of nouns.

 The banana
  the bananas

It is used when something is unique in its kind or nature.

The sun sets in the West (existe solo un sol y un solo oeste). The sky is

blue (solo existe un cielo).

Article is not used in many cases for non-countable nouns. Let's see the case of hour
and time: While hour can be counted, the same does not happen with time.

Correct: We have been waiting for an hour.

Incorrect: We have been waiting for a time.

In this case it would be said: We have been waiting for some time.

In cases where the meaning can change when using an uncountable noun.

 There’s chocolate from Switzerland.

There’s a chocolate from Switzerland.

In the second case, unlike the first, there are several types of chocolate, and that of
Switzerland is one of them.

 Articles are not used for abstract ideas:

Correct: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Incorrect: The beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Articles are not used to refer to proper nouns (names of people, countries, cities, etc.).

 Peru is a South American country.

 Rome is the capital city of Italy.

 The only exceptions are the names of countries that include a common noun
(Kingdom, State, Republic ...). Among them are the United Kingdom, the United States
or the Czech Republic. An article with the Netherlands must also be used.
