Common Core Literacy Standards


These are the standards students will be learning and assessed on for Unit 1.
You can reinforce what we practice in class by applying some of these skills
at home, as they are applicable, with books that you read with your child.

Fiction
RL 1.3 ➢ I can describe characters, settings, and major events in a story,
using key details.
○ Talk about characters feelings, traits, actions, and thoughts.
○ Describe settings and events using key details from the text.
○ Find problems and solutions.

Nonfiction

Reading Foundations
RF 1.1a ➢ I can recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first
word, capitalization, ending punctuation).
RF 1.2b ➢ I can orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds
(Phonemes), including consonant blends.
RF 1.2c ➢ I can isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds
(phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.
RF 1.2d ➢ I can segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete
sequence of individual sounds (phonemes)
RF 1.3b ➢ I can decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
RF 1.3g ➢ I can recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled
words.
Language
L 1.1a ➔ I can print all upper and lowercase letters.
L 1.1b ➔ I can use common and proper nouns.
L 1.2a ➔ I can capitalize dates and names of people.
L 1.2b ➔ I can use end punctuation for sentences.
