‘Pabasa sa Nutrisyon’ as one of the City’s key

programs on nutrition
By: Trixie Mae B. Umali

Health and nutrition are among those important necessities a family needs in order to reach their
fullest potential, and to be able to live well and active. As a City, this is also the reason why Santa
Rosa, with the leadership of Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas, focuses on adopting, creating, and
implementing various programs on nutrition.

One of those programs is the adoption of ‘Pabasa sa Nutrisyon’, a 10-week nutrition course
conceptualized by the Nutrition Center of the Philippines (NCP). It aims to gather mothers and/or heads
of households to a one hour a week of peer-to-peer sharing of knowledge and information on how they
can reduce their family’s vulnerability to malnutrition.

Said program is being carried out in the City for the past years now with the help of the City Nutrition
Office (CNO) and the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS). The BNS usually facilitates the learning
session while mothers take turns reading the nutrition manual.

Some of the topics are the benefits of breastfeeding, identifying vitamin deficiencies, and what
constitutes a balanced diet.

Over the years, those are also the same topics that served as guide to mothers in the grassroot levels
of the City. A lot has graduated from the course and lot more will be added on the list as its
implementation continues.

Moreover, the consistency of the program has given the City various recognitions from 2007 up to
now. One of the awards was the “Hall of Fame Award on the Implementation of Pabasa sa Nutrisyon”
given by the Philippine Association of Nutrition way back in 2009.

To sum up, ‘Pabasa sa Nutrisyon’ program of the City has long been existing and it will continue
given the fact that nutrition is one of City’s priorities.

After all, Mayor Arlene believes that proper nutrition starts at home, and to complement it, the role of
the mothers when it comes to giving proper nutrition and achieving a healthy lifestyle is just as important
and essential.
