III. OBJECTIVES

1.) To be able paint a metal.

2.) To learn how to properly paint a metal.

3.) To learn and apply the safety measures in painting a metal.

4.) To improve the student’s consistency in measuring and drawing of layouts.

IV. THEORY AND INTRODUCTION

As how it is called, metal painting is the practice of painting the metal’s surfaces. It is

similar in painting walls and woods, but before painting a metal requires you to prepare them

properly before applying the paint. An example for the preparation needed to successfully paint a

metal, is choosing a well-ventilated area, and removing of rust, if there is any, before applying

the paint. Applying a zinc-chromate primer before adding a regular primer is a must if the metal

is rusted, but if there is no rust a regular primer will be enough.

V. PROCEDURE

1) Draw the metal piece that will be painted and properly measure the piece.

2) Wear PPE when conducting the exercise.

3) Find and work at a well-ventilated area

4) Clean the metal with a rug or a cloth to remove the dirt and smoothen it using a sandpaper
5) Apply the primer, but if it is rusted use zinc-chromate primer first before applying the regular
one. Use a sandpaper to scrap off the rust, then wipe it down again to remove any residue.

6) When you are satisfied with the metal and is clean enough, use a paint brush and dip it at the
paint with your chosen color and apply it in the metal.

7) Let the paint dry, then apply a 2nd coat of paint to have a better result in terms of color and
protection.

8) Let it dry again, then finish the exercise with applying a clear varnish, it can make the color
better and protect the paint more.

VIII. DISCUSSION

The shop exercise about proper painting of metal. The process of painting in metal is

quite similar in painting the walls/concrete and woods, it just needs more preparation before

applying a paint. What makes the metal much more energy to work with rather than other

materials because it is hard for paints to adhere to, but with proper preparation it is possible. One
is needed to clean and remove the rust in the metal 1 st and using a sandpaper is a must, then the

usage of primer is necessary to clean it properly specially for rusts. Another factor to consider in

painting a metal is the place of work, make sure to work at a well-ventilated area because the

paint and rust particles are harmful to humans. When the preparations are over, painting the

metal is now possible just like how a wall/concrete or wood is being painted. There is also a

different method in finalizing the metal work, which are double coating the paint when it is dry

and the amplification of varnish to have a better result with the color and prolong the life of the

paint.

IX. RECOMMENDATION & AND CONCLUSION

In working and metal wok, always wear proper PPE, for it can save your life, clothes and

from danger. For this shop exercise glove is very needed for the hands is the most exposed part

for this exercise. Smoothen and clean the metal properly because it can affect the effectiveness of

the paint. In working with a rusted metal use zinc-chromate primer and then apply a regular

primer. Double coat the paint and apply a clear varnish to protect the color.
