Title: Workshop Report for Arc and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Welding

Objectives:
 Students are able to apply safety measures during their presence in the workshop
 Students are able to identify and use the equipment and tools is the workshop
 Students are able to learn the correct welding techniques
 Students are able to understand an engineering drawing to do a welding project

Introduction and Theory

Introduction

Welding is a joining process of metals with metals. Two parts of metal connected at their contacting surfaces by
suitable heat and preasure. Many welding processes are accomplish by heat alone, some others by heat and
pressure and some with pressure only.Welding methods are simple to learn and basic skills may be acquired
quickly with practice.Welding is the technique of molecularly joining metals.A weld is strong homogeneus
connection between two or more metal part.

Theory Arc Welding

Arc welding is one of several fusion processes for joining metal. The electric created by placing the tip of an
electrode to the workpiece and swiftly withdrawing it to a distance adequate to maintain the arc.By applying
intense heat in the mediate arc area, the heat creates melts a piece of the electrode used, the stick welding power
resource offers continuous current and can be either alternating current or direct current.Direct current power
source are typically used to provide the greatest welding properties. While cooling and solidification,a
metallurgical bond is created.

Theory MIG Welding

Metal inert gas welding, or MIG welding, is the most widely used of the arc welding processes. It is
suitable for everything from hobbies and small fabrications or repairs, to large structures, shipbuilding,
and robotic welding. MIG can be used on a broad range of materials and thicknesses. The concept
underlying MIG welding is simple, with the arc being struck between the tip of the reel-fed wire as it
emerges from the torch, and the workpiece. The shielding gas prevents oxidation from forming, or the
use of some flux “cored wires avoids the need for shielding gas. For most MIG welding sets, the user
sets the wire feed speed, which determines the current& then the user sets the voltage to suit that
current.

Apparatus:
Arc Welding:
1. Arc Welding Machine - converts the voltage from high voltage to low voltage but produces a high
current to produce an arc for welding use.
2. Electrode - filler rods that will melt and become weld metal or moldings in the welding process as
well as stabilize the arc
3. Electrode Holder - holds the electrode and as a handle for the welder to avoid electric shock.
4. Ground Plate
5. Chalk Markers - workpiece marker tool on metal.

MiG Welding:
1. MIG Welding Machine - welding different types of metals and different thicknesses of metals.
2. Electrode Wire
3. Inert Gas - serves as a protective gas
4. Welding Nozzle - fix the electrode wire and inert gas to the welding area
5. Chalk Markers - workpiece marker tool on metal.

1.4 Safety Tools:

1. Apron - protect the welder's body from small explosions

2. Gloves - can protect hands from sparks and hot workpieces.
3. Face Shield - protects the eyes and face of the welder from being exposed to arc sparks
4. Safety Shoes - avoid exposure to sparks in the feet and burns

Work Procedure

Arc Welding

1. Before welding, be sure to wear safety shoes, aprons, gloves, and face protection.
2. Read the lab sheet carefully before starting work and prepare all the equipment to be used
3. Mark the line to be welded on the steel using a chalk marker and place it on the welding table
4. Attach the electrode to the electrode holder.
5. Cover your face with a face protector then perform the first run test by gently closing the gap between
the electrode ends on a steel about 0.3mm while holding it at a 15-30 degree angle to the weld spot on
the other unused steel sheet.
6. Start welding the steel to get the product
7. Use flake hammer to remove the formed struts and comb the welding spot to get a clean look
8. Clean the welding work area

MIG Welding
1. Before welding, be sure to wear safety shoes, aprons, gloves, and face protection.
2. Read the lab sheet carefully before starting work and prepare all the equipment to be used
3. Mark the line to be welded on the steel using a chalk marker and place it on the welding table
4. Feed the electrode wire about 1cm out from the welding nozzle
5. Cover your face with a face protector then perform the first run test by gently closing the gap between the
electrode ends on a steel about 0.3mm while holding it at a 15-30 degree angle to the weld spot on the
other unused steel sheet
6. Pull the trigger and when the arcing has started, slowly move and cover the welding spot with circle
pattern
7. Adjust the current and gas flow rate to the optimum value after evaluating welding result from the test run
welding
8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 on the original steel piece that will be welded to obtain the finishing project.

Suggestion for improvement

I make an error of drawing the line on the steel before welding. As the result my welding was tilted. So for
the improvement we must draw the line the carefully to be straight which make the welding result perfect.
I also make a mistake when weld.In the first weld line was thin and the other line was perfect. It is
because I welded too fast.

Conclusion

As a result, the dim of being able to undertake practical welding is within reach. The learner must be able
to weld in addition to having a solid learning of the theories.Welding procedure are used in practical as
well. In accomplishing the experiment, we were able to learn the arc welding process in practicalwork. It
may be no printed instruction can impart to the beginner the skill necessary for successful
welding.Personal instruction by an experienced
