Generator circuit breaker control.

This document describes the configuration and setup of the control and engine systems to
control the generator circuitbreaker
Following issues must be verified:
- Earth connections
- E-stop circuitry
- Engine must be running off load
- all rated values should be filled in
- sensing lines are defined and connected

1. Connections from TEC to circuit breaker control.

Control signals from TEC to generator circuit breaker

- Synchronizer breaker allowed to close
- Synchronizer breaker close
- Synchronizer breaker under-voltage coil

The relays configured for the circuit breaker control are rated to use both low voltage as well as
110VDC coils.

Control signals from generator circuit breaker to TEC

- Generator circuit breaker closed

Synchronizer breaker allowed to close (potential free contact from TEC to Close coil)
The contact will be closed as soon as the synchronization starts, or when the breaker will be
closed on a dead bus (the contact will not be closed if the mode “hand-off load” is selected).
This contact is set in series with the synchronizer breaker close contact.

Synchronizer breaker close (potential free contact from TEC to close coil)
This contact will be closed by the synchronizer if the busbar is powered up (if the busbar is not
powered up the synchronizer is bypassed and the breaker will be forced to close)
Busbar is supposed to be dead if:
Busbar voltage is zero and
Busbar frequency is zero and
Incomer breaker is open and
Not any other engine (connected via CAN) is running
After receiving a synchronization command, a 2 seconds close pulse is given.

Synchronizer breaker under voltage coil (potential free contact from TEC to under-voltage coil)
Under voltage coil will be energized, 1 second before releasing the synchronizer. If the circuit
breaker needs to be opened the relay will be de-energized.
If the generator breaker is equipped with a trip coil instead of an under-voltage coil, one has to add an
external relay to invert the logic

Generator circuit breaker closed (potential free contact from circuit breaker to TEC)
This is the actual status from the circuit breaker. Auxiliary contact is supposed to be closed if the
generator circuit breaker is closed

Software configuration is the same for both configurations (YO/YU) If trip coil is applied (mainly
done for MV applications) an extra relay needs to be added in order to invert the logic

2. Configuration of systems.

System Setup

Settings within this screen can be changed with password level 5. It allows dealers to setup the
system according to systems requirements.

Following screens indicates only the i/o that are described in this chapter

3. Functional test and operation.

On closing the generator circuit breaker for the first time a synchronization check must be
applied. This can be done 2 ways:

Synchronization check after closing on a dead bus.

After that the circuit breaker is closed the voltage on either side of the breaker must be the
same.
To verify:
Sync check before closing on dead bus
Vb1-Vb2 0
Vb2-Vb3 0
Vg1-Vg2 Line voltage
Vg2-Vg3 Line voltage
VBREF-gnd 0 volt
VGREF-gnd 0 volt

Sync check after closing on dead bus

Vb1-Vb2 Line voltage
Vb2-Vb3 Line voltage
Vg1-Vg2 Line voltage
Vg2-Vg3 Line voltage
VBREF-gnd 0 volt
VGREF-gnd 0 volt
VB1-VG1 0 volt
VB2-VG2 0 volt
VB3-VG3 0 volt
VBREF-VGREF 0 volt

Closing the breaker on a dead bus is the easiest way to check the wiring between voltage
sensing lines and the power organiser. If it is not possible to power-down the busbar the
voltage on either side from the generator circuit breaker needs to be measured. This voltage
needs to be 0 (or almost zero) as soon as the synchronizer pulse is given.

Synchronization check on a powered up busbar

1) Switch engine in hand off load
2) Select number of pulses that will be given during synchronizing (in handoff load, the
synchronizer will be released as well, but the breaker will not be closed) After that the
number of selected pulses has been received, synchronization will be stopped and the
engine will start running in hand off load.
3) Check the voltage across the breaker if sync pulse is given (led “Synchroniser pulse” will lit
after the pulse is given). This voltage across a breaker pole must be low if the pulse is
given.
4) A least 2 phases needs to be verified.
