Worksheet 1

Q1-The reactivity series is where metals are arranged in the decreasing order of their
reaction with other metals. If a metal is more reactive metal only then can it replace a
metal which is less reactive. a metal cannot displace a lower reactive metal thus no
reaction.

Q2-A metal reacting with cold water will produce metal hydroxide.

Q3-When a metal reacts with steam then the products formed are metal oxide and
hydrogen gas.

Q4-Aluminium.

Q5-Platinum.

Q6-When a metal reacts with dilute acid, salts are formed. During this reaction
hydrogen gas is evolved. In other words, when a metal is added to dilute acids, salt and
hydrogen gas are formed.

Q7-Copper because since it is less reactive than Hydrogen it cannot displace it to take
its place.

Q8-Reduction is a chemical reaction that involves the gaining of electrons by one of the
atoms involved in the reaction between two chemicals.Since these metals are less
reactive than Carbon they can be reduced by heating with Carbon.

Q9-A thermal decomposition reaction occurs when heat is applied to a compound

causing it to decompose (break down) into multiple different chemical substances.

Q10-The thermal decomposition of sodium nitrate to produce sodium nitrite and oxygen.

Q11-The thermal decomposition of copper nitrate to produce copper oxide, nitrogen

dioxide and oxygen. When copper nitrate heated first heat losses the water molecule, on
further heating it decomposes to give reddish brown gas Nitrogen dioxide and oxygen.
The greenish blue crystals of Copper nitrate will change to black residue of copper
oxide and give reddish brown gas Nitrogen dioxide on heating.

Q12-When green copper carbonate{CuCO3} is heated it decomposes forming black

residue of copper oxide {CuO} and carbon dioxide {CO2} is given off.
Q13-The thermal decomposition of copper nitrate to produce copper oxide, nitrogen
dioxide and oxygen.

Q14-Heating blue copper hydroxide produces copper oxide, CuO, a black solid

Worksheet 2
Q1-By volume, dry air contains 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.04%
carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases.

Q2-If we want oxygen gas from air, we have to separate out all the other gases present
in the air. The air is compressed by increasing the pressure and is then cooled by
decreasing the temperature to get liquid air. This liquid air is allowed to warm-up slowly
in a fractional distillation column, where gases get separated at different heights
depending upon their boiling points.

Q3-Bathing, drinking, and cooking.

Q4-?

Q5-Gases that lead to air pollution include carbon, nitrogen and sulfur oxides

Q6-Vehicles,power plants, wood burning places and wildfires.

Q7-Air pollution is known to cause irritation in the eyes, lungs, nose, and throat. It
creates respiratory problems and exacerbates existing conditions such as asthma and
emphysema. When continually exposed to air pollution, humans become at higher risk
for cardiovascular disease.

Q8- Catalytic converters contain substances or compounds such as platinum, rhodium,

or palladium that act as catalysts and converters. The compounds act like catalysts
because they cause a chemical reaction to occur, but they don’t change their original
form. The compounds also act as converters because they react with and convert
harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides produced
by your engine.

Q9-Greenhouse gasses. When carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollutants and
greenhouse gases collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation
that have bounced off the earth’s surface. Normally, this radiation would escape into
space—but these pollutants, which can last for years to centuries in the atmosphere,
trap the heat and cause the planet to get hotter.Melting glaciers, rising sea
levels, disruption of habitats and allergies, asthma, and infectious disease outbreaks.

Q10-It is balanced by the Carbon cycle.

Q11-Rusting, a well known example of corrosion, is the breakdown of metals.4Fe(s) + 3O2(g)

→ 2Fe2O3(s).Galvanizing,sacrificial protection and oiling.
