This paper discusses some uncertainties that occasionally arise when considering
postweld heat treatment and presents, by the use of decision trees, a quick method
for determining whether or not postweld heat treatment is required.

As an aid to determining requirements for PWHT (post- requirement in Division 2 as it is in Division 1. The omission
weld heat treatment) in accordance with the ASME Boiler and of this requirement could have been an oversight during the
Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, I have developed the preparation of Division 2; however, discussions with other

PWHT requirement tables. Depending upon
context, W may also indicate a weld dimension
such as fillet weld throat, groove weld depth or
pipe or tube wall thickness for circumferential butt
welding. If the W being considered is that defined
in Par. USC-56(rf)(6) or (7) or AF-402.3(e) or (/), it
should be treated as Tin using the charts,
(c) It may sometimes be advantageous to use T rather
than W.
3 When PWHT is required because of a consideration of
W, the time at temperature may be based on the dimension of
W; however, the heating and cooling rate must be based on
the maximum thickness of the shell or head plate.

deal with specified content; either SA specifications or
purchaser specifications.
