QUESTIONS

1. (a) Using f(x) = x2 and g(x) = x+1

Find (f o g)(x) and (g o f)(x)
Are these two answers the same? What does this information tell
you about compositions? [10]

(b) Function h is defined by: h(x) = 3 x 2 - 7 x - 5

Find h(x - 2). [5]

(c) The cost, C, in dollars, of renting a hall for the prom is given by the
formula C(n) = 500 + 4n, where n is the number of students
attending the prom. Calculate the cost of renting the hall if 70
students attend. [5]

2. (a) Prove that

A- (B ∩ C) = (A- B) ∪ (A-C)

For all sets A, B and C [10]

(b) If I be the set of all integers and if the relation R be defined over the
set I by xR y if x-y is an even integer, where x,y ∈I, show that R is an
equivalence relation. [10]

3. (a) Prove that the following is a tautology

[10]

(b) Given the value of p ~ q is true. Determine the value of - p v (p ~ q).

[5]

(c) Negate the statement

For all real x, if “x > 3”, then “x2 > 9” [5]

(c) Find the inverse of the matrix

(d) Let p(x): x is mammal and q (x): x is animal. Translate the following
in English:
(∀x)(q(x) ∧(∼p(x)) ) [2]

(e) Let A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}, determine the truth value of the following:
(i) (∀x∈A)(x + 3 = 10), (ii) (∃x∈A)(x + 3 <5). [4]

5. Build an electronic circuit for (A∧B)→ C1.

(a) You have electronic gates TRUE, FALSE, AND, OR, NAND. [5]

(b) You only have electronic gates NAND. [5]

(i) All students have taken a course in mathematics. [5]
(ii) Some students are intelligent, but not hardworking. [5]
