PHOTOCOPIABLE ACTIVITIES

PRESENT SIMPLE; ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY

1B TRUE OR FALSE?
CHOICES

Use after: Module 1 Grammar

Interaction: groups of three or four
Time: about 30 minutes
Materials: one photocopy and two sets of 15 cards for each student

Instructions:
1 Divide the class into groups of three or four.
2 Give out a copy of the resource sheet to each student. Tell them they should make five
sentences about themselves, three of which should be true and two of which should be
false. Explain in L1 that they will be trying to trick the other students in their class into
thinking that the false sentences are true so to try and make them plausible.
3 Write some example sentences on the board, e.g. I always play tennis on Saturdays.
I often go to discos. I usually come to school on my bike. I never eat chocolate.
I sometimes watch horror films at the weekend. If you like, you can write three true
sentences about yourself and two false ones and ask students to guess which are true
and which are false in order to demonstrate the activity.
4 They should write their sentences on their paper. Tell them not to show their paper to
the other students in their group. When they have completed their sentences, they
should circle true or false on their resource sheets about each sentence.
5 Give out a set of true/false cards to each student. (They should have 15 of each.)
6 Students take turns to read aloud one of their sentences. After they have read their
sentence, the other students in their group must guess whether they think the
sentence is true or false. They choose one of their cards and place it in the middle of
the table.
7 If they guess correctly, they keep their true/false card. If they guess wrongly, the
student who reads their sentence aloud takes their true/false card.
8 Play continues with students taking turns to read aloud their sentences until all of the
sentences have been read. The winner is the student with the most true/false cards.
9 When they have finished, get group feedback. Ask them if any of the sentences
surprised them or caught them out. When conducting the feedback, encourage
students to use the third person, e.g. Pedro never has a shower in the morning. Nadia
always gets up early on Saturdays.
