Exercise 4 - Negative sequence feature

Transformer differential protection negative

sequence feature

On completion of this exercise you should be able to

 understand the difference between unrestrained negative sequence differential protection and the negative
sequence protection
 see the influence of tripping time when classic blocking is bypassed
 see the possibility to detect turn-to-turn fault when the fault current is very low

Figure 1 shows all included functionality in the configuration. Function blocks in black are configured and the
rest indicate possible additions.

Prerequisite
Exercise 1 is finished and the IED is ready for testing (configuration, parameters, signal matrix
and eventually the graphical display is written into the IED).

Test set with 6 current outputs are available.

The transformer has been replaced in this exercise,

thus CT-data have been changed.

3. Set CTPrim to 1000 A (all three phases)

Current transformer rated values, primary and secondary.

Changed from 2000/1 to 1000/1

We can ignore the 3rd winding since we will only test W1-W2.

Exercise 4 - Negative sequence feature

Compare the settings and figure 1.

The transformer has been replaced in this exercise.

Winding 1 is the phase angle reference (Y) and

magnitude reference.

We exclude the OLTC in this exercise.

Differential protection specific settings

The SOTF feature might influence the test result so

we take it out of operation.

12. Set Operation to On

13. Check that SOTFMode is Off

14. Set Idmin to 0.40 IB

15. Check that NegSeqDiffEn is Off

16. Set IMinNegSeq to 0.03

17. Check that OpenCTEnable is Off

Page 2 Transformer protection RET670

1MRG004961
Exercise 4 - Negative sequence feature

IdMin is increased to make room for the negative sequence protection below the characteristic.

NegSeqDiffEn is the parameter we will shift Off On during the test

IMinNegSeq is changed from 4 to 3 % to make the feature more sensitive

Exercise 4 - Negative sequence feature

Unrestrained negative sequence differential protection

A fault current is flowing towards the object

(> 1.2 ∙ IRated) and the differential protection will start.

19. Inject ILxHVSec and ILxMVSec (avoid tripping)

Exercise 4 - Negative sequence feature

Primary currents
HV-side:
IL1HVSec = 656 Ð0°
IL2HVSec = 542 Ð232.78°
IL3HVSec = 542 Ð127.22°

MV-side:
IL1MVSec = 1312 Ð0°
IL2MVSec = 1196 Ð236.73°
IL3MVSec = 1196 Ð123.27°

Secondary currents for injection

The HV-side:
IL1HVSec = 1.312 Ð0°
IL2HVSec = 1.085 Ð232.78°
IL3HVSec = 1.085 Ð127.22°

The MV-side:
IL1MVSec = 1.312 Ð0°
IL2MVSec = 1.196 Ð236.73°
IL3MVSec = 1.196 Ð123.27°

The restrained differential protection is tripping (checking wave-form and harmonics).

The unrestrained negative sequence differential protection is tripping since the internal/external fault
discriminator has declared the fault as internal. The wave-form and harmonic check is bypassed.

Exercise 4 - Negative sequence feature

Sensitive negative sequence protection – turn-to-turn fault

The transformer is loaded (< 0.7 ∙ IRated) and negative

sequence current is flowing due to internal fault (the
differential protection will not start).

Figure 9: Open CT detection settings

30. Set NegSeqDiffEn Off

31. Inject ILxHVSec and ILxMVSec (avoid tripping)

Primary currents
HV-side:
IL1HVSec = 311 Ð0°
IL2HVSec = 219 Ð240°
IL3HVSec = 219 Ð120°

MV-side:
IL1MVSec = 346 Ð180°
IL2MVSec = 437 Ð60°
IL3MVSec = 437 Ð300°

Secondary currents for injection

The HV-side:
IL1HVSec = 0.621 Ð0°
IL2HVSec = 0.437 Ð240°
IL3HVSec = 0.437 Ð120°

The MV-side:
IL1MVSec = 346 Ð180°
IL2MVSec = 437 Ð60°
IL3MVSec = 437 Ð300°

The restrained differential protection will not trip.

The sensitive negative sequence protection is tripping independent of the differential protection.
