TECHNOLOGY AND LITERACY: ENGAGING STUDENTS FROM LOW SOCIO-

ECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS THROUGH EXEMPLARY TEACHING 1

Technology and literacy: Engaging students from low socio-economic backgrounds

through exemplary teaching

Introduction

The modern technology has changed our world in many different ways. Focusing on a

classroom setting, our present technology can be beneficial for students as they can easily

relate or engage more actively. Around 75% of educators believed that the implementation

of this tools in class, can have a positive impact on students’ school engagement. This is

according to the study prepared by IT Trade Association Comp TIA (Cox, n. d.). A recent

research has shown that the students who are engage at school are reported to have a lower

emotional distress and suicidal attempts (Blum and Libbey, 2004).

As low SES students’ engagement are highly affected by the educational issues, educators

must deepen the research to assists the students in their learning process. Educational

research can be an effective tool in devising methods of teaching practices. As an educator,

it is significant to understand the research methodology processes, in able to evaluate the

quality of other’s research and therefore can be applied for teaching practice (Ullman,

2015).

The research article of Callow and Orlando (2015) also mentioned about the importance of

using ICT in increasing the student’s engagement with technology and literacy. Students,

especially from low SES communities, should understand and believe that school is an

enjoyable learning environment (Callow & Orlando, 2015). Moreover, the research paper

highlighted that the influence of teacher’s pedagogical use of technology can enhance the

literacy learning and engagement of low SES students. The Australian Professional

Standards for Teachers under the Standards 2.6, 3.4 and 4.5, outlined the importance of

ICT in the classroom. It is also drawn in the said standards that teachers should

demonstrate a range of strategies and resources using ICT (Australian Institute for

Teaching and School Leadership, 2014).
