Part 2 - Short Answer

1. In chemistry the concept of the mole plays a central role. Explain why the mole, and not
mass,
is used to ultimately make calculations in stoichiometry.  (3 marks)

2. Sodium hydroxide, NaOH, reacts with phosphoric acid (H3PO4) to form sodium phosphate
(Na3PO4) and water in the following unbalanced (that means balance it) chemical equation.

NaOH(s) + H3PO4(aq) Na3PO4(aq) + H2O(l)

a. If 14.7g of NaOH is reacted with sufficient H3PO4, what mass of Na3PO4 will be
produced?

b. How many molecules of H2O are produced in this reaction? (2 marksOne reaction that is
used in the smelting of copper sulphide ores involves copper (I) oxide and copper (I)
sulphide. These two compounds react to produce copper, Cu, and sulphur dioxide, SO2, gas.
If 96.5 g of copper (I) oxide, Cu2O, reacts with 44.8 g of copper (I) sulphide, Cu2S,
determine the following:

a. the mass of sulphur dioxide that is produced (include all steps).  (6 marks)

b. If 88.0 g of Cu is actually recovered when the experiment is performed, determine the
percentage yield of this product. (2 marks)

c. What mass of the excess reagent will remain unreacted?  (3 marks)
