Lesson: Physical Science – Sound

Prepared by: Angelica C. Camilon

Identify the nature of sound;

Recognize the importance of sound in our daily lives; and
Exhibit the different application of sound in our everyday living

The students are presented with different sounds that they need to
guess. These are sound that students get to hear in their daily living.

Sound No. 1 Bowling alley

Sound No. 2 Crackling fire

Sound No. 3 Snoring man

Sound No. 4 Puto vendor

Sound No. 5 Boiling water

Sound No. 6 Toilet flush

 Sound is defined as a form of energy that travels in invisible waves created by
vibrating objects and propagated through a medium from one location to
another.
 Sound is a form of mechanical wave which means it needs a medium in order
for it to propagate.
 Sound waves travel at different speed depending on what medium it is
traveling to. Sound travel fastest in solid since the particles are tightly pack,
hence, it takes lesser time for each vibratory particles to vibrate or disturb one
another, while it is travels slowest in gaseous material because its particles
are far away from each other, hence, it takes longer time for the particles to
disturb one another.
 Sound is not heard in a vacuum, for example the outer space since there are
no particles that would help in sound propagation.

Tell whether the sound

travels fast, faster or
fastest on the different
mediums given.
This is a group activity where students will be group into 4 or 5. The students
must create a 1- or 2-minute video showing the application on the significance of
sound in their daily lives. For example: Waking up in the morning with the help of an
alarm clock or listening to music for relaxation.

 The students will reflect on the question “How the

Earth/life would be without sound?”
 Connect the story of the famous musician and
composer, Ludwig Van Beethoven, despite being
deaf, he did not stop in continuing his passion
composing songs that later made him known to be
one of the greatest influencers in the history of
Western music.

Briefly explain the following:

1. What is sound?
2. When sound waves travel from air to water, what will happen to the speed at which
they are moving? (Will it speed up or slow down?)
3. Why can’t sound travel in a vacuum?
4-5. Site five (5) examples of the application of sound in our daily activities. (One
point each.)
