Lesson: Potential and Kinetic Energy (Part 1)

Prepared by: Angelica C. Camilon

 Differentiate between potential and kinetic energy.

 Solve mathematical problems using the formula for potential energy.
 Develop the value of patience and proactiveness among students

 Greetings
 Prayer
 Online Classroom Etiquette

Title of Activity: Group the Picture

Mechanics:
 Energy is defined as the ability to do work.
 Energy comes from different sources, such as the sun, wind, petroleum,
water and even the food that humans consume.
 Energy is divided into two types: Potential and kinetic energy.
 Potential energy is the energy stored in an object. This also means that
the energy has the ability to do something useful later on.
 Examples of potential energy includes:
 Stretching a rubber band
 Water on top of the fall
 Gasoline stored inside the gasoline tank
 There is also a relationship between potential energy, mass and also
height:
 The higher an object, the more potential energy.
 The more mass an object has, the more potential energy it has.
 Potential energy can also be mathematically represented as: P = mgh
Where:
m = mass of an object
g = gravitation due to acceleration
h = height
 Potential energy can also be converted to kinetic energy when the
stored energy begins to move, the object is now converting from
potential energy into kinetic energy.
Directions: Solve for the Potential Energy of the given mathematical problem.

The occurrence of the pandemic has put a lot of human activities into a
halt. Many plans if not being cancelled, were put into a total stop. Flights inside or
outside the country is are no longer allowed, going to malls are also prohibited.
Jobs and swimming activities during the summer were also paused and many of
us are left with no choice but to stay at home.

It is one of the hard things in life: accepting that life

sometimes doesn’t go as planned. In this kind of situation,
how do you respond or react when things did not go out the
way you planned them to be?
Have you keep your cool

During these trying times, responding negatively on the

situation will never help. But if you change the game, things
would probably turn out better. Let us trust God’s plans. Have
faith that things will work out for good. Turn your fears into
power, action and patience. In time everything will be all right,
because life is filled with unexpected surprises.
(This assessment will be given after the discussion of Kinetic Energy)

Directions: Tell whether the given examples are showing a Potential or Kinetic
Energy. Write PE for Potential Energy and KE for Kinetic Energy.

_KE 1. Flowing river

_PE 2. A parked car
_PE 3. A baby sleeping soundly
_KE 4. A bouncing ball
_PE 5. Orange fruit hanging from a tree

For items 6-15: Solve the following word problem using the GRESA method.

Problem No. 1 (5 Points)

A mango fruit hangs from a tree. The fruit is a 0.25kg and is about to fall to the ground. If
the fruit is 13 meters from the ground, how much potential energy does it possess?

Given:
mass = 0.25kg
h = 13m
g = 9.8m/s2

Required: PE?
Equation: PE = mgh
Solution:
PE = (0.25kg)(9.8m/s2)(13m)
PE = 31.85J

Answer: 31. 85J

Problem No. 2 (5 Points)
What is the kinetic energy of a 62kg boulder that is moving with a speed of 14m/s?

Given:
m = 150kg
v = 15m/s

Required: KE =?

Equation: KE = ½ mv2
Solution:
KE = ½ (150kg) (15 m/s)2
KE = ½ (150kg) (225)

Answer:
KE = 16875J
